1 English Language Arts Phonemic Awareness, Word Recognition and Fluency identify words that sound alike. identify spelling patterns in words that sound alike. use letters and sounds to figure out words that are unfamiliar. read text using skills that are well known to me. read with expression. show I understand what is written by changing the way I say the words. Reading Processes: Print Concepts and Comprehension and Self-Monitoring Strategies identify the purpose for reading a selection. predict story endings and content by using titles, pictures and captions. compare and contrast different types of reading materials. list events in the order they happen in a story. state the main idea of a selection. identify details that make the meaning clear in any selection I read. predict what will happen from information presented in a selection. draw diagrams to show understanding of a selection. demonstrate understanding of a selection by using factual and abstract information (an idea that is not stated or written). set the pace of reading to fit the difficulty of a selection. choose reading materials based on interest, author or suggestions. read independently for various reasons. Reading Applications: Informational, Technical and Persuasive Text use the table of contents, chapter headings, glossary, index and other reference material to locate information. use questions to answer factual questions. identify main idea and supporting details of an informational selection. effectively use maps, charts, graphs and diagrams. identify whether a set of directions is in sequence (proper order).

2 Reading Applications: Literary Text compare and contrast how plots are different in each story. use details from a story to describe characters. identify where a story takes place. retell what happened in the story in the order the events happened. identify other literary forms such as poems, fiction, non-fiction and plays. tell how the author s words help the reader understand the story and the attitude and feelings of the characters. identify the theme of a story. Writing Processes gather writing ideas from printed information and by talking to others. state the main idea in writing. identify the reason for writing a selection. fit writing to the interest of the reader. develop a paper that has a beginning, middle and end. write a paper that has paragraphs with a topic sentence and details. use the computer to compose a story. edit written material. use reference materials to choose words. organize sentences and paragraphs to make the meaning clear. use correct language. correctly spell, punctuate and capitalize words. use checklists, rubrics, oral and written comments to judge writing. write and illustrate (draw pictures) a story to share with others. Writing Applications tell the order of events in a story. write a report about books, stories and poems. write business letters, thank you letters and letters of request. write a report with a main idea and details about the topic. Writing Conventions write legibly in cursive handwriting. correctly use spelling rules. correctly spell words with two or more syllables, commonly used words, contractions (can t, won t), compound words (barnyard, blueberries), homonyms (see, sea) and words with prefixes (misspell, unhappy). Research choose a topic for research. use many sources and ways to gather information. use charts, pictures and diagrams to explain information.

Mathematics Number Sense and Operations write a whole number in many equivalent forms. put numbers in order from smallest to largest. count money using coins and bills up to $10. write fractions as words or numbers. correctly place common fractions and mixed numbers on a number line. recognize and represent parts of a whole with decimals and fractions. model, represent and explain multiplication. model, represent and explain division. explain relationships between operations. explain the commutative and associative properties. add and subtract whole numbers. multiply and divide numbers up to 10. multiply two- and three- digit numbers. evaluate the reasonableness of an answer. Measurement select appropriate units of measure. list items that are the size of common units. tell time to the nearest minute and find elapsed time. read a thermometer. measure and estimate length, weight and volume using metric and U.S. customary units. make estimates of perimeter, area and volume using physical models. Geometry and Spatial Sense identify the vertex, edge, angle, side and face of shapes. identify right angles, as well as acute and obtuse triangles. plot a point on a grid. draw lines of symmetry. build a 3-D object. Patterns, Functions and Algebra describe multiplication in pattern or rule. use patterns to make predictions and solve problems. model a problem using pictures or symbols. write and solve a mathematical statement. express mathematical relationships as equations and inequalities. create a table of data. identify and describe quantitative changes.

4 Data Analysis and Probability make and read bar graphs and picture graphs. support a conclusion using information from a table or graph. match data with its graph. translate information freely among charts, tables and graphs. read a time line. identify and explain the mode. conduct a simple experiment or simulation of a simple event. use pictures, diagrams, physical models and lists to solve problems. Science Earth Science compare rocks by their properties of color, layering and texture. record information and investigate rocks that are found in layers. describe how plants and weather break bigger rocks into smaller rocks. observe and describe what different elements make up soil. investigate the color, texture, capacity to retain water and ability to support plant growth of different types of soils. investigate how soils are often in layers and are different from place to place. Life Science describe the life cycles of different animals. tell how an animal s structures help it survive. group animals differently based on characteristics that you can see. see how extinct plants and animals may look like some we see today. find out how fossils show how animals lived long ago and their environment. show how changes in habitats can be good or bad. Physical Science describe where an object is compared to the objects around it. describe how objects move by tracing and measuring their position over time. tell what kinds of things affect movement of an object. predict how an object changes when it is pushed or pulled or when weight or friction is added. Science and Technology describe how technology can help people do things better, such as move heavy things. describe how technology can be helpful or harmful. find out how technology may affect me, my family and my community. identify a problem and come up with possible solutions to the problem. solve different problems such as how to keep a paper from blowing away. Scientific Inquiry identify the correct tools and safely use them to measure and record length and weight in metric and English units. talk about other people s observations and measurements. read simple graphs and tables that I or others make and explain them. identify and use science safety rules. record and organize information into journals, charts and tables. communicate science findings to my classmates or others in different ways.

5 Scientific Ways of Knowing describe types of investigations scientists use based on the question they are trying to answer. keep records of my investigations and observations and not change them even if they are different from someone else s. read stories about men and women from all cultures who made contributions to science. identify various careers in science. describe how science is rewarding as a career. Geography use maps and pictures to ask and answer questions about my community. use a compass and its four main points to describe a location. use a number / letter system to locate things on a map. find the equator, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, North Pole, South Pole, prime meridian, the tropics and hemispheres on maps and globes. find and describe landforms, climate, vegetation, population and economic characteristics of my community. identify ways the environment changes and has been changed by my community. show ways to move people and products. show how communication is used to move ideas from place to place. Economics define opportunity cost and give examples. identify consumers and producers and explain the difference between production and consumption. explain the advantages and disadvantages of specialization and the division of labor to produce items. identify different kinds of money used today and in the past. understand that I can use money to buy things or save. explain how the local community is an example of a market. identify examples of economic competition in my community. Government explain how my local government works, is organized and identify leaders. identify local government buildings and explain their functions. identify what my local government does, why it s needed and money is raised. define power and authority. explain why things like bullying and stealing are not fair. show I understand political activity.

6 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities describe how people help make my community a better place to live. be a good citizen and describe what makes a good citizen.
