MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Syllabus, Fall Cleveland State University Department of Mathematics Syllabus for MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Sections 1 and 3 Fall 2018: August 27 December 14 1 Course Information Instructor: Dr. L. Felipe Martins. Office: RT l.martins@csuohio.edu Phone: Office Hours: MTWF, 9:00am to 10:00am, in the classroom. If these times are not convenient, please contact me to make an appointment. 2 Textbook Calculus Early Transcendentals, 2ed by Jon Rogawski (Chapters 12 to 17). 3 Course Description and Topics Multivariable calculus extends the methods and ideas from calculus to the case where there are more than one independent or dependent variable. Since the vast majority of models that represent the real world need to represent several different quantities with multiple relationships, extending the calculus to handle the case of several variables is an essential step. As such, multivariable calculus is a fundamental tool in many applications of mathematics to science and engineering. From a mathematical point of view, multivariable calculus explores techniques that are a fundamental prerequisite to advanced topics, including optimization, ordinary and partial differential equations, probability and statistics, differential geometry and complex analysis. The course covers the following topics, where the numbers correspond to textbook sections: 12.1 Vectors in the Plane 12.2 Vectors in Three Dimensions 12.3 Dot Product and the Angle between Two Vectors 12.4 The Cross Product

MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Syllabus, Fall Planes in Three-Space 13.1 Vector-Valued Functions 13.2 Calculus of Vector-Valued Functions 13.3 Arc Length and Speed 14.1 Functions of Two or More Variables 14.2 Limits and Continuity in Several Variables 14.3 Partial Derivatives 14.4 Differentiability and Tangent Planes 14.5 The Gradient and Directional Derivatives 14.6 The Chain Rule 14.7 Optimization in Several Variables 14.8 Lagrange Multipliers: Optimizing with a Constraint 15.1 Integration in Two Variables 15.2 Double Integrals over More General Regions 15.3 Triple Integrals 15.6 Change of Variables 16.1 Vector Fields 16.2 Line Integrals 16.3 Conservative Vector Fields 16.4 Parametrized Surfaces and Surface Integrals 16.5 Surface Integrals of Vector Fields 17.1 Green s Theorem 17.2 Stokes Theorem 17.3 Divergence Theorem

MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Syllabus, Fall Learning Resources Blackboard Learn (BBLearn): This course makes intensive use of the CSU online course management system: Visit the site frequently for course information, discussion boards, supplemental material, useful links, and other resources. Math Learning Center: Free tutoring is available at the Math Learning Center, MC230. Tutors are highly competent graduate students with solid knowledge of calculus and experience in various aspects of learning and teaching. Learning Center schedules will be announced by your instructor and posted in BBLearn. 5 Course work and grading 5.1 Attendance Attendance is required in this course. Students with less than 80% attendance will receive a penalty of 5% on their final score. It is not necessary to present an excuse due to occasional absences caused by unforeseen circumstances. If an extended absence is necessary, please contact the instructor immediately. Excuses for extended absences will be given at the instructor s discretion, and may require appropriate documentation. 5.2 Homework (10%) Homework is available online at the site: MTH281 Fall18/ Please bookmark the homework link for easy access. Use Firefox, Safari or Chrome to access the homework. Internet Explorer is not recommended, since it is slower and does not display some problems correctly. There will be no extensions for homework assignments unless a student has a extended absence from class that can be documented. Please do not wait until the last day to start the homework. Not being able to access the system will not be accepted as a valid excuse for late homework. Each homework set has a different number of problems, but all problems have the same overall weight. At the end of the course, the total homework score converted to a scale of 0 to 100 points. 5.3 Tests (60%) All tests are in-class, with closed notes and books. Use of a graphical calculator is allowed. There will be three tests in the course, in the dates indicated in the the table below and attached schedule.

MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Syllabus, Fall Students that have at least 85% attendance can replace the lowest test score with their score in the final. To take advantage of this option, a student must take all three tests and score at least 50% in each test. Make-up Policy: Make-ups can be given, at the instructor s discretion, for missed tests that have a valid reason, such as a medical emergency involving the student or immediate family members. In all cases, the student must present documentation justifying the absence, and provide contact information for the person providing the documentation. The following reasons will not be accepted as excuses for taking a make-up: Travel, unless it is related to a medical emergency. Work commitments. If you have a work-related schedule conflict, you must arrange with your employer to receive a dispensation. Medical conditions for which you cannot provide documentation. If you didn t visit a doctor office or other medical facility, you can obtain a note from the nurse s office at the university. Having another test in the same day. Not being able to prepare for the test. Unless an extended absence is justified, make-ups have to be taken by the Monday after the regular test date. Test dates and topics (tentative): Test Date Topics (tentative) 1 September , 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, 12.5, 13.1, 13.2, 13.3, 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, October , 14.6, 14.7, 14.8, 15.1, 15.2, November , 16.1, 16.2, 16.3, 16.4, 16.5, 17.1 Calculator Policy: Use of a graphing calculator is an integral part of the course. All students are required to have one, and know how to operate it. The department currently supports the TI-84+. It makes this model available to instructors, and students can expect departmental help in learning to use it. Calculators with equivalent capabilities, such as the TI-83 and TI-84, are also accepted. Calculators with symbolic manipulation capacity, such as the TI-89 series, TI-92 series, Voyage 200, and TI-NSpire CAS are not allowed on exams. Students that own such calculators will be provided with a TI84+ for tests. Use of a cell phone or any other communication device use is prohibited during exams. Violation of this policy will result in a score of 0 (zero) in the exam where the violation took place.

MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Syllabus, Fall Final (30%) The final is a comprehensive, in-class exam with closed notes and books. Calculators are allowed, with the same policy as for tests. The final is in the following date: Section 1: December 12, 8:00am 10:00am Section 3: December 10, 10:15am 12:15am A score of at least 70% on the final is required to obtain a passing grade in the course. 5.5 Grade assignment Percent scores are rounded up to the next integer, and grades are assigned according to the following table: Percent score Grade 95 to 100 A 90 to 94 A- 85 to 89 B+ 83 to 84 B 80 to 82 B- 75 to 79 C+ 70 to 74 C 60 to 69 D 59 or less F 6 General Policies 6.1 Grade reporting and disputes All student scores will be posted in Blackboard as course work and tests are done. Students are responsible for checking their own progress, and reporting to the instructor any discrepancies as soon as they are noticed. It is also strongly suggested that you retain all graded work from the course until the end of the semester and grades are posted. This way if a dispute arises concerning a recorded grade and the actual grade, we have the documentation needed to rectify the situation. Additionally, graded work makes for excellent study material for upcoming exams. 6.2 Class Conduct Class attendance and participation is essential for success in this course. Please come to class prepared, and take an active role in class discussions and activities.

MTH 281 Multivariable Calculus Syllabus, Fall Please bring a graphing calculator to each class. Cell phones should be turned off or placed on vibrate. Text messaging during class is not appropriate and grounds for removal from class. During computer lab sessions, checking and surfing the web is inappropriate when the instructor is talking and again grounds for removal from the class. Other serious disruptions are grounds for removal as well. 6.3 Withdrawals Last day to withdraw is November 2, Withdrawing from the course may put you in violation of the federally mandated standards for academic progress (SAP) that you must maintain to be eligible for financial aid. Read the link on the course website for information about the implications of withdrawing from the course for your financial aid or visit Campus Scholastic Dishonesty Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated. Cheating includes copying or receiving help from another student on quizzes, tests or exams, as well as allowing another student to copy from your work. Merely copying another student s homework, or allowing someone else to do your homework for you, is also considered cheating. If cheating occurs in a quiz or unit test, the student will receive a grade of 0 for that component of the course. If cheating occurs in the final exam, the student will receive a grade of F in the course. Any cheating activity may be reported for further action. Information regarding the official CSU policy regarding cheating and plagiarism can be found in the CSU Code of Student Conduct at Disabilities Statement Educational access is the provision of classroom accommodations, auxiliary aids and services to ensure equal educational opportunities for all students regardless of their disability. Any student who feels he or she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the Office of Disability Services at (216) The Office is located in MC 147. Accommodations need to be requested in advance and will not be granted retroactively. 6.6 Disclaimer The course instructor reserves the right to modify these procedures as the course progresses, and to change the assignment schedule from the outline given. Any changes will be announced in class with adequate advance notice. You are responsible for being aware of any changes discussed in class and/or in the BBLearn course site. This includes exam days, homework due dates and changes in policy.
