1 MATH 120 F: INTRODUCTORY PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS (ONLINE) CRN: Fall units Instructor: Nancy Ikeda Office: Phone: (714) Office Hours: Mondays/Wednesdays 2 3 pm; Tuesdays/Thursdays 11:15 am 12:30 pm Online Lecture/Office Hours (in ConferZoom in Canvas): Tuesdays 8:00 9:00 pm nikeda@fullcoll.edu *Please use the Canvas Inbox to send messages! Mandatory Class Meetings: Exam 1: Wednesday, September 26, 7 9 pm in 123 Exam 2: Wednesday, October 31, 7 9 pm in 123 Final Exam: Wednesday, December 5, 7 9 pm in 123 Textbook: Illowsky, Dean, Introductory Statistics. This is a free, open-source textbook from OpenStax ( Prerequisites: Successful completion of Math 40 (or equivalent) with grade of C or better or math skills clearance Course Description: This course covers descriptive statistics, elementary probability theory and inferential statistics. Computers utilizing software specifically designed for statistical calculations and graphing (R) will be used for various topics. A TI-84 Plus graphing calculator will be used in this class. Student Learning Outcomes: Collect, organize, summarize, and analyze data for presentation by conducting statistical studies Generalize from samples to populations, perform estimations and hypothesis tests, determine relationships among variables and make predictions based upon those results CLASS COMPONENTS: Lectures: You must complete a section lecture by reading the textbook. All of the textbook sections are linked in Modules in Canvas. You can also watch chapter video lectures presented by the author of the textbook. To ensure that you have completed the lecture, you will be required to complete Chapter Vocabulary sheets (which can be found in Modules in Canvas). Type up the definitions and examples or print the sheets and complete them in pencil. The Chapter Vocabulary sheets can be turned in online or can be turned in on exam days (see the schedule). Be sure to go through the checklist for each section to make sure you have covered all of the information that you are expected to know. Some sections will have additional material that you must learn. Homework: Homework problems are assigned from the textbook (pdf version) for each section. Some sections have supplemental problems that are not from the text. After you have completed the lecture, do the homework problems by typing the answers in a Word document or writing the answers by hand on notebook paper. If you have done the homework on notebook paper, you will need to either scan the pages or use a photo-to-pdf app on your smart phone (such as CamScanner or Adobe Scan) to save the file as a pdf. Homework for the entire week will be due on Sundays (by 11:59 pm). No late homework will be accepted! Your lowest homework score will be dropped. Quizzes: Short quizzes must be completed after each homework section. Click on the section quiz in the current week s Module in Canvas. Each quiz has several free-response questions, and must
2 be completed in 30 minutes. You will only have one chance for each quiz. Be sure to check the due dates and click Submit Quiz to turn in your quiz. Quizzes are due on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Read the instructions on each quiz before you take it. You will need your TI-84 Plus calculator on most quizzes, as well as scratch paper. On some quizzes, you will need to do the problems on notebook paper and either scan or use a photo-to-pdf app on your smart phone to save the file as a pdf. You should try to take your quizzes without using notes or any other aids since you will not be allowed to use them on the on-campus exams and final. You cannot take your quizzes late. Your lowest 4 quiz scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. Other Assignments: Assignments also include weekly posts on your Group or the class Discussion Board, Journal assignments, practice exams and any other non-homework or non-quiz assignments in Canvas. You are expected to participate in non-mandatory Discussion Boards also. Post your (class related, non-personal) questions on the class Discussion Board. If you have a homework question, find the appropriate chapter in the class Discussion Board. It is very helpful for you to work out the problem on paper, take a picture of it, and upload your photo to the Discussion Board. You can even make a video of yourself working out the problem to the point where you get stuck and post it. By doing this, you will be showing your work and it will be easier for someone else to find your mistake or point you in the right direction. If you do not have a smart phone or digital camera, use the equation editor in Canvas to show the work you have done so far. Feel free to respond to someone else s question if you have the (correct) answer. Project/Labs: A project will be assigned which will include the collection, description, graphing and analysis of data. Computer labs using R will also be assigned. Exams: There are 3 on-campus exams: 2 exams and a comprehensive final exam. Exams will be based on the lectures, text and homework. On-campus exams will consist of free-response questions in which you must show your work and will include questions on vocabulary. The TI- 84 Plus graphing calculator will be required on exams. Cell phones/smart watches, MP3 players and other electronic devices will NOT be allowed during exams. Bring pencils, extra lead, an eraser, a graphing calculator, Chapter Vocabulary sheets, and PHOTO IDENTIFICATION to the exams. Failure to bring a photo ID to an exam will result in not being allowed to take the exam (and no option for a make-up). If you have a legitimate schedule conflict with an exam, you must message the instructor at least 1 week before the exam to schedule a make-up. Requests for a make-up exam less than 1 week before the exam will only be granted in exceptional circumstances, with appropriate verification. The grading breakdown is as follows: Assignments 10% Project/Labs 10% Quizzes 20% Exams (Wed 9/26 & 10/31, 7 9 pm) 30% Final (Wed 12/5, 7 9 pm) 30% Final course grades will be based on 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D and below 60% F. Check your Grades in Canvas for your scores. OTHER CLASS INFORMATION: Math Lab: The Math Lab is located in the back of the library, room 807. The Math Lab is a resource available to assist students in solving mathematical problems or in understanding mathematical concepts. The lab offers one-on-one tutoring, computer software, video tutorials, and a variety of other resources. To use the lab, please enroll in Math N01 F, a free, zero-unit course.
3 Academic Honesty: Cheating is illegal and will not be tolerated. This includes copying another s work, plagiarizing, cheat sheets or notes during exams, and aiding another student in cheating. Cheating will result in a score of zero for the assignment in question. Any score of zero for cheating will not be dropped from your grade. Violators will be dealt with according to the policy in the FC catalog. Attendance: Registered students who do not complete the first week s assignments by Sunday, August 26 will be dropped from the course. You may be dropped from this course if you have not completed at least one assignment per week for 2 weeks (consecutive or not). This could result in a W or even an F. Make sure to drop by the deadline (last day to drop with W : Sunday, November 11, 2018) if you do not want an F. Communication: The instructor will send out Announcements with weekly assignments, and additional reminders as needed through Canvas. You should be able to set your preferred mode of communication (including text messages) and frequency of notifications in Canvas. You are expected to check your or messages regularly (daily!) for course information. You are also expected to treat all members of the class with respect when communicating (on Discussion Boards or via , etc.). If you have any questions, concerns or need clarification, the best way to contact the instructor is by sending a message through the Canvas Inbox (or in person during office hours). The instructor will usually respond within 24 hours, but may take up to 2 business days. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: NO CELL PHONES DURING CLASS!! Silence them and put them away during class. Unauthorized use of electronic devices (including smart watches) or phones ringing during an exam will result in a zero on the exam. Read the textbook, take notes, do the assignments, go to the Math Lab. Use a spiral notebook or 3-ring binder to organize materials from class and to keep all of your work in one place. Bring all materials/supplies (pencils, lead, erasers, TI-84 Plus calculator, ruler, Chapter Vocabulary sheets, practice exams, photo ID) to class/exams. A TI-84 Plus graphing calculator will be used (cost: $100+). Be sure to have an extra set of 4 AAA batteries or make sure the rechargable battery is charged for exams! Use a pencil for all work turned in. NO CREDIT will be given for work done in pen!! Do NOT hesitate to ask questions online (Discussion Board) or stop by office hours or the Math Lab for extra help! Exchange contact information with classmates in case you want to form a study group. If you need additional help (besides office hours and the Math Lab), try the Tutoring Center in the Library Learning Resource Center. There is also free online tutoring available. There are graphing calculators available for loan from the Library. You need your student ID card to check one out. Children are not allowed on campus unless accompanied by a parent/guardian. They may not attend classes and should never be left unsupervised/unattended on campus. Grievances, grade appeals and disruptive conduct will be dealt with according to the policy in the FC catalog. Please familiarize yourself with all college policies. As cited in BP5500, A student who violates the standards of student conduct shall be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the removal, suspension or expulsion of the student. You are in violation of the Standards of Student Conduct and Discipline Policy any time you allow someone else to log in and/or complete your coursework on your behalf.
4 Fullerton College is committed to providing educational accommodations for students with disabilities upon timely request by the student to the instructor. Verification of the disability must also be provided. Disability Support Services functions as a resource for students and faculty in the determination and provision of educational accommodations. Please take note of the safety features in and close to your classroom, as well as study the posted evacuation route. The most direct route of egress may not be the safest because of the existence of roofing tiles or other potentially hazardous conditions. Similarly, running out of the building can also be dangerous during severe earthquakes. During strong quakes the recommended response is to drop, cover, and hold on until the shaking stops. Follow the guidance of your instructor. You are asked to go to the designated assembly area. Your cooperation during emergencies can minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and others. Computer/internet requirements for Canvas: Windows 7 or higher and a supported version of Internet Explorer, Edge, Firefox or Chrome Mac OS 10.6 or higher and a supported version of Safari, Firefox or Chrome Linux with ChromeOS ios 7 or higher Android 4.2 or higher A high-speed internet connection Current version of Flash, Java, Adobe Reader, QuickTime, Microsoft Silverlight Chrome is the recommended browser for Canvas Check the Tech Services & Computer Resources page in Modules for more information on requirements and plug-ins To login to Canvas: Click on the Canvas icon in the upper right corner of the Fullerton College home page ( It is the first icon next to the Search box. Computer access on campus: You can access Canvas on campus in 1) 511: Mon Thurs 8 am 10 pm 2) 2200 A/B: Mon Thurs 7:30 am 10 pm; Fri 8 am 5 pm; Sat, 10 am 3 pm 3) 807 (Math Lab): Mon Thurs 7:30 am 8:45 pm; Fri 8 am 3 pm; Sat 8 am 2 pm Advice from many previous online students: Be sure to finish your work early! Stay organized and manage your time wisely. Some sections are easy and others are hard, so budget enough time during the week to do your work. Don t wait until the last minute to do your work. You may not finish before 11:59 pm! It is very easy to fall behind and it is hard to catch up. Stay focused and on task. Take advantage of help in the Math Lab. Ask as many questions as needed. The only wrong questions are the ones that you don t ask! If mathematics is your weakness, then don t take an online math class. Instead, take a class that has a professor giving the lesson, which is better for struggling students. You really need to set aside time to work on assignments in this class. You can t expect to get a good grade by slacking off and doing the work last minute, or missing assignments. Get yourself organized early! Good luck!
