Graduate students in other programs who interested in statistics or quality will also elect to take this class. In the sections that follow, please use sub-numbering as appropriate (eg. 3.1, 3.2, etc.) 3.0 Goals of the course (including rationale for the course, when appropriate): 3.1 To introduce students to statistical process control concepts and methods. 3.2 To introduce students to acceptance sampling concepts and methods. 3.3 To introduce students to process capability concepts and methods. 3.4 To provide students with the appropriate tools and techniques to design, implement, and monitor process control, process capability, and acceptance sampling studies. 4.0 Course description (as it will appear in the RIT Catalog, including pre- and corequisites, and quarters offered). Please use the following format: COS-STAT-621 Statistical Quality Control A practical course designed to provide in-depth understanding of the principles and practices of statistical process control, process capability, and acceptance sampling. Course Learning Outcome Level 1: Knowledge: 1.1 Identifies the probability distribution that serves as the foundation for control limits on control charts. 1.2 Defines In Statistical Control and Out of Control. 1.3 Describes guidelines for the implementation of control charts. Assessment Method Homework Exams Projects 1.4 Defines types of sampling risks 1.5 Describes types of acceptance sampling plans that can be used for attribute and variables data 1.6 Selects a acceptance sampling plan from a published standard Level 2: Comprehension: 2.1.Gives examples of chance and assignable causes. 2.2.Gives examples of common non-random patterns observed on control charts and their root causes. 2.3.Discusses the relative merits of attribute versus variable control charts. 3

4 2.4.Explains the problem of estimating process capability for a process that is not in statistical control. 2.5.Understands classification of defects and nonconformities 2.6.Describes the effect of changes in n and c on the OC curve for a given acceptance sampling plan 2.7.Understands the usage of published acceptance sampling standards Level 3: Application: 3.1.Computes control limits on Control Charts using only a calculator and the formulas. 3.2.Computes control limits on Control Charts using statistical software. 3.3.Calculates average run length for in control and out of control processes. 3.4.Calculates process capability indices for in control processes. 3.5.Administers published acceptance sampling standards based on lot size and stated quality levels Level 4: Analysis: 4.1. Distinguishes an in control process from an out of control process based on the application of control limits and sensitizing rules Recognizes the effect of non-normal data on the interpretation control charts Recognizes the effect of non-normal data on the interpretation of process capability indices. 4.4.Diagrams the flow of a given acceptance sampling plan from sample collection to an accept/reject decision 4.5.Differentiates between minor, major and critical defects Level 5: Synthesis: 5.1.Devises appropriate rational subgroups for control charts Anticipates the results of inappropriate rational subgroups on the limits of a control chart. 5.3.Designs the data collection for control charts. 5.4.Designs the data collection for capability studies. 4

5 5.5.Adapts the use of normality checks to determine if a variables sampling plan is appropriate or not 5.6.Devises a variables sampling plan based on single or double specification limits and a measure of variability (known or unknown) Level 6: Evaluation: 6.1.
