1 1. Welcome to Anatomy and Physiology Welcome to Anatomy and Physiology. I'm pleased that you have enrolled in Anatomy and Physiology and I look forward to working with you. If this is your first online course, there are some things you need to know. This syllabus will serve as a guide for your coursework. Course Outline (tentative and subject to change) Module 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology Module 2: How Are We Organized? Module 3: How Do We Move? Module 4: What Controls and Regulates Our Body? Module 5: How Does Our Body Defend Itself? Module 6: What Are the Processes of the Body? Requirements You are responsible for logging into the course and participating by completing assignments, discussions, quizzes, and/or any other tasks presented. The time of day is not important but consistent access to the course is required for success. I encourage you to begin working on the course right away. Delivery Our Anatomy and Physiology course will be using Moodle for our method of delivery. I will post class materials such as (syllabus, reading, assignments, quizzes, etc.) and post announcements. Please be prepared to acquire important class materials and announcements through Moodle. If you have questions about lessons or assignments, please post them in the discussion forum. Please do not me directly with your questions, as I will post all responses to questions on the forum as a resource for other students. I have set up the forum so that I receive an as soon as anyone posts to the discussion forum, so my response will be timely. Workload Students are required to spend 7-10 hours on each module. Course Information Course Title: Anatomy and Physiology Prerequisites: Successful completion of Biology/Honors Biology and Chemistry/Honors Chemistry Description: This course is designed to present a detailed study of the relationship between the structure and function and form of the human body and the chemical and physical processes that allow it to function. Anatomy will include the muscles, bones, nerves, veins, and organs necessary for normal body functions. In addition, all body systems will be explored-skeletal, muscular, nervous, sensory, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Physiology is the study of what goes on inside the anatomy during everyday life and during physical exertion. Intended Audience: High School Students, Grade 11-12, Credit: 1 Unit Program: Heath Science Students School: Academy for Technology and Academics

3 4. Goals and Outcomes Course Goals The following course goals articulate the general objectives and purpose of this course. Students will know and understand that: All body systems work together to maintain homeostasis Structure dictates function of body systems Choices we make during our lifetime affect our physiological health and wellbeing Course Outcomes After completing this course, students will be able to: Determine and provide examples of body systems working together to maintain homeostasis Identify body system structures and apply how it is related to the physiology of the body system Choices we make during our lifetime affect our physiological health and wellbeing 5. Grading Course Assessments Quizzes A quiz will be administered for each module during the session. You will complete each quiz online using Moodle. Each quiz will be considered open-book; you may consult all online course materials, or even external Internet resources. You are also encouraged to collaborate with your classmates currently enrolled in this course, provided that you each submit your own quiz. You will be allowed a maximum of 24 hours to complete each quiz, which must be submitted before the deadlines posted in Moodle.

4 Discussions Module discussions are designed to engage a student s interaction with others in the course and provide constant, helpful feedback and assistance when dealing with various issues in online learning. Discussion postings should be courteous, thoughtful, and carefully written. To facilitate the discussion and prevent procrastination, two deadlines are scheduled for each discussion. Pay attention to each date. Assignments These written items and online activities are opportunities for the students to demonstrate their abilities to apply the knowledge gained in the course, as well as from other health science courses, to actual circumstances to be experienced in the student internship. Assessment Quizzes Discussions Assignments Weight 20% (4% each) 10% (2% each) 70% (7% each) Grades Grades will be calculated by converting point accumulations for each assessment using the table below. Students must earn a grade of D or higher in order to receive credit for this course. Score Grade A B C D

5 Incomplete A grade of incomplete may be granted to students who have suffered serious personal illness or critical emergency circumstances during the academic term, resulting in failure to complete all assignments by the end of the quarter. Documentation from a physician is required for a temporary grade of incomplete. 6. Textbooks and Supplies Required Texts Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology 8 th ed., Elaine E. Marieb Recommended Texts Making Anatomy and Physiology Come Alive, Nicole Miller 7. Schedule Module 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology This module serves to introduce you to scientific method. In addition, you will create a digital poster about yourself and your interest in health related fields. This will be shared with other class members.

6 Topics: Health Careers, Overview of Anatomy and Physiology, Scientific Method Module 2: How Are We Organized? (Language, Cells and Tissues) This module covers the basics of anatomy, how the body is organized into regions, a description of the organ systems and a general overview of body tissues. Topics: Homeostasis (Body Systems), Anatomical and Directional Terminology, Tissue Types and Identification Module 3: How Do We Move? (Skeletal and Muscular System) This module covers the skeletal and muscular systems. During this module you will be identifying bones of the skeleton and muscles of the body. In addition, there will be a focus on bone fractures and disorders of these systems. Topics: Bones of the Human Skeleton, Types of Bone Fractures and Healing, Main Muscles of the Human Body, Muscular Disorders/Injuries 4: What Controls & Regulates Our Body? (Nervous & Endocrine Systems) This module covers the control and regulation of the body systems. It includes the nervous and endocrine systems. There is a focus on the central nervous system and the brain. Topics: Central and Peripheral Nervous System Function and Disorders, Brain Module 5: How Does Our Body Defend Itself? (Integumentary & Lymphatic Systems) In this module you will explore the defenses of the human body. The Integumentary and Lymphatic systems have a primary role in this defense. Integumentary organs (skin, nails, hair, etc.) will be explored as well as interactive activities that involve the immune system. Topics: Skin, Burns, Skin Disorders, Immunity

7 Module 6: What are the Processes of the Body? (Blood & Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, and Reproductive Systems) In this module you will explore the major organ systems of the body. This will be an overview of each of the systems and their inter-relationships. At the end of this module, there will be no doubt that body structure dictates the function of that structure. Topics: Organ System, Blood, Heart, Respiration, Digestion, Excretion, and Reproduction 8. Course Policies. Time Management An online course can take a considerable amount of time. As stated in welcome page, each module requires 6 9 hours for readings and assignments/assessments. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you begin each assignment early. Work on it regularly over the week rather than waiting until the last day or two. This will allow you to have the chance to work out problems or get help if needed. Participation Depending on the class activities, you are responsible for completing weekly assignments, participating in discussion groups, and checking in to the course site on a consistent basis. Faculty Initiated Drop Please be advised that if you do not attend class at least once during the first week, I will drop you from class. Since this is an online course, this requirement means that you MUST be present in our Moodle course site during the first week and participate in the first assignment Self- Introduction.

8 Deadlines You will always be given explicit instructions on where to send your assignments. Assignments are usually due on a weekly basis the exact dates will always be found in the activities. If you wish to complete an assignment prior to the due date, you may (however, a group assignment must be completed during the week assigned OR upon approval of every member of the group). NO LATE SUBMISSION WILL BE ACCEPTED. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS POLICY AND SUBMIT YOUR WORK ON TIME. Turnaround Time The instructor will be monitoring the discussion board on a daily basis. Submitted assignments will be graded and feedback will be provided within 3 days after the module is concluded. E- mail messages will be answered within 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on weekends. Academic Integrity Under all circumstances, students are expected to be honest in their dealings with faculty, administrative staff, and fellow students. In speaking and/or correspondence with members of the school community, students must give an accurate representation of the facts at hand. Students must submit work that fairly and accurately reflects their level of accomplishment. Any work that is not a product of the student s own effort is considered dishonest. Students may not submit the same work for more than one course. A student may receive a discipline referral for academic dishonesty. Please refer to the Student Handbook for additional information regarding the policy on academic honesty. Other Information and Its Etiquette Students must use their Horry County school accounts for all correspondence with their instructor. This will help ensure that s are secure and that media center staff can assist students with any related technical problems. ATA media center staff will not be able to help resolve problems students may encounter with external services, such as Yahoo! Mail, or Hotmail. It is expected that all correspondence to the instructor will be conducted in a professional manner. When utilizing for this class, you should: 1. include the course title, number, and section in the subject heading 2. address the recipient in an appropriate manner, 3. utilize proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, 4. close with your full name. Computing Requirements Required Hardware To access e-learning courses, a multimedia-class computer (PC or Mac) with Internet connectivity is required. The minimum system configurations required to view e-learning course content are described below. 10 Required Browser Students must have an Internet browser installed on their computers to view and interact with online courses. Mozilla Firefox, version 1.5 or better, is recommended. Please note that browsers may need to be further optimized if courses utilizing multimedia require any browser plug-ins or ancillary players.
