1 Purpose Statement Business and industry are creating a growing demand for trained technicians in the field of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration. This program is designed to prepare a student for full-time entry-level employment immediately upon completion of the program Air Conditioning Diploma Ronnie Cole and Larry Wallace Print Unit Plans Unit Planning Home 1 : Student Learning Students are able to understand and troubleshoot electrical diagrams for HVAC and wiring up various HVAC units used for training in the lab both serial, parallel, and series-parallel system circuits Final Exam, Lab skills training using hands on training boards trainers. AIR 134, AIR 135. Air 134 students should be able to wire up a simple ac and heating unit by the end of the course with zero mistakes and test out on final test with a over all average of 88% and 100% with Hands On testing. AIR 135 students should be able to wire up a Heat pump system both the heating and cooling side of the system by the end of the course with zero mistakes and test out on final test with a over all average of 88% and 100% with Hands On testing Students averaged 88% pass rate on AIR 134 written test and 95% hands-on success rate on the hands on electrical control trainer. 2 AIR 135 written test and 100% hands-on the hands on trainers control. There were approximately 13 students in night classes. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. Students demonstrated strong abilities to understand & troubleshoot basic electrical components in AIR 134. An electrical hands on trainers circuit board trainers that was added to AIR135. Students were required to build, install, and operate a circuit trainer using HVAC components. This trainer simulated the electronic circuitry on an HVAC system both heating,cooling systems and heat pump systems. Students had some problem in understanding the electrical layout of the heat pump system and basis air condition system at first but got better by the end of the course. To help with the problem the teacher should have more electrical hands on training and blue print reading throughout the course both AIR 134 and AIR 135. This will help students to better understand the electrical part when wiring up the systems. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. 10 : Student Learning Students enrolled in Air Conditioning will be able to demonstrate hands on using trainers both Gas and Oil type with equipment/trainers at 90% accuracy. will be measured by a final exam and skills test on both oil and Gas. which will be starting up both the oil and gas trainers after trouble shooting the systems to find the problems with each system a passing rate of 85% or more. Final written test with a passing score of 88% or better. and a over all class average of 90% Students averaged 89.5% pass rate on written test through out the course. Students averaged 88% hands-on success rate through out the course. With final grades for students as a hold averaged 90% or better on both hands on and testing. 2 of 10 8/9/16, 3:20 PM
3 Students demonstrated strong abilities of basic skills to install and start-up HVAC systems, heating systems (Oil and Gas). Need the work more with the basics of the oil and gas trainer electrical diagrams to understand the wiring part of the systems both gas and oil. Be able to complete all hands on trainers with little to no assisting from Instructors with a grade point average of 90% or above. 2 : Student Learning Students are able to trouble shoot and install various electrical motors into Gas, Oil, and AC units, etc. Also troubleshoot as needed on various motors that is throughout the HVAC field. Required to silver brass copper pipe in a lab setting with no leaks in the piping when tested. Final Exam, Lab skills installing and trouble shooting various electrical motors used in the HVAC Field as studied in AIR 121, AIR 122 study book and lab books with as average 91% or better. Pass silver brass piping system with noir leaks when tested Students averaged 91% pass rate on AIR 121 written test and 90% hands-on success rate on brazing copper tubing as a lab project using mapp gas brazing system. Students averaged 88% pass rate on AIR 122 written test and 93% hands-on success rate on the brazing hands on test. And a 90% passing rate on book testing. There were approximately 14 students on the average in these classes.also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. Students strong abilities of basic skills will be able to improve by being able to repair/replace basic parts on HVAC systems and start-up HVAC system by requiring students to break down installation theory in several small steps. Grades should greatly improve for the students of AIR 121. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. 3 of 10 8/9/16, 3:20 PM
4 3 : Student Learning Students can troubleshoot and charge HVAC systems with refrigerants Final Exam, Lab skills using systems in lab Heat Pump System, and Regular A/C systems. AIR 123, AIR 124. Working on heat pump systems troubleshoot and charge HVAC systems with refrigerants. Students should be able to pass final exams with and over all average of 85% or better. Students should be able to pass lab skills with a over all average of 80% Students averaged 88% pass rate on AIR 123 written test and 80% hands-on (lab skills) success rate on troubleshooting a over charged system or undercharged System. And being able to remove or add refrigeration as needed for each system tested in the lab. Students averaged 81% pass rate on AIR 124 written test and 83% hands-on success rate on using superheat, subcooling, and delta T principles using the Heil Heat Pump System. There were approximately 20 students in these classes. Both groups of students averaged 88% or better on written test. Both groups averaged 80% or better in lab skills. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. Students need to be able to better demonstrate stronger abilities to identify over charged or undercharged systems by having more troubleshooting in class. and be able to check and fully understand better what sub cooling and super heat can do to a charged system. 5 4 : Student Learning Students can troubleshoot a heat pump circuit system and defrost board for varies heat pump systems problems find in the HVAC trade today. Final Exam, Lab skills using Heat Pump Systems (Two) in the classroom /lab for AIR 134, AIR Students averaged 90% pass rate on AIR 134 written test and 89% hands-on success rate on troubleshooting high and low voltage input/output on heat pump circuit defrost board. Students averaged 90% pass rate on AIR 135 written test and 86% hands-on success rate on the defrost sequence of operation of the defrost cycle on Rheem circuit board. There were approximately 13 students in these classes. Also had DHE-1 tudents a total of 6 students with the information. the same as above. Students demonstrated strong abilities to troubleshoot high and low voltage input/output in AIR 134. Heat pumps (two) were added to help students understand the defrost cycle sequence of operation in AIR 135. 6 : Student Learning Students are able to identify & troubleshoot a hermetic compressor by troubleshooting run, start, and common windings for grounded, shorted, or open on a hermetic compressor. Also required to take apart a compressor and identifies each part and how they work as a hole. Final Exam, Lab skills trouble shoot a compressor using a Rheem Heat Pump System. Students were required to disassemble a compressor and identifying the various parts of the compressor and how each part works with the system to make the compressor run. Knowing how to check common, start, and run on the compressor. AIR 122, AIR 124. Midterms and Annually 600 Students averaged 85% pass rate on AIR 122 written test and 90% hands-on success rate on identifying the start, run, and common terminals on a hermetic compressor. And able to take apart the lab compressors and put the compressors back together. Students averaged 80% pass rate on AIR 124 written test and 90% hands-on success rate on the troubleshooting run, start, and common windings for grounded, shorted, or open on a hermetic compressor. There were approximately 13 students in these classes. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. Students demonstrated strong abilities to identify the terminals on a hermetic compressor AIR 122. Additional compressors were added to help students learn the components and operation of hermetic compressors. 7 : Students are able to identify characteristics and components of an oil & gas burning system Final Exam, Lab skills using trainers oil and gas system. Being able to identify the various parts and how they work with the system as a hole. For the oil trainer be able to tune the system up and make oil/gas system work. By doing all the require test needed for AIR 154, AIR 155 Mid Trems and Annually 600 Students averaged 90% pass rate on AIR 154 written test and 93% hands-on skills lab success rate on identifying the components of gas and oil burner. Students averaged 85% pass rate on AIR 155 written test and 89% hands-on skills lab success rate on the troubleshooting and combustion analysis of oil and gas burning systems. There were approximately 13 students in these classes. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. Students demonstrated strong abilities to identify the components of a oil and gas burning system AIR 154. A oil and gas trainer was added to help the students to better understand the oil and gas systems. AIR 155.Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. 7 : Student Learning Students are trained for service tech careers in the HVAC field. Students can diagnose and troubleshoot hermetic compressor windings. This program outcome is accomplished by using lab training equipment and lecture about theory and application. 7 of 10 8/9/16, 3:20 PM
8 Hands-on skills assessments by using working software for trainers that has been added to the shop/classroom. Quizzes will be based on theory related problems and troubleshooting problems with working trainers in classroom. The passing scores for hands-on,and quizzes should be a total average between both 80%. Medterm and Annually Lab assessments using working trainers, and having quizzes on various HVAC components. All students got a 80% or better on the required hands-on testing, and quizzes through out the 16 week course. Had a total of 13 students in class through out the grading period. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. Instructors use these results to find weaknesses in the student's skill level as related to the various components to the HVAC field. The weaknesses the students need to do better on is the theory and some on hands-on training with trainers in the shop/classroom These results will help the instructors to identify the areas that are needed for additional time of study for the students. 8 : Student Learning Students can learn to diagnose and troubleshoot defrost controls boards. Students can learn the sequence of operation and to troubleshoot defrost control boards. Hands-on skills assessments focusing on defrost control boards. Will be using test boards and running equipment in the lab. Students will be required to have a overall average for both classroom and lad setting a score of 80% of 10 8/9/16, 3:20 PM
9 Lab assessments using HVAC control boards, and quizzes on control boards. Equipment in the lab to be used to trouble shoot for testing the knowledge of understanding of the students as needed through out the course. Students had a average score of 85% in classroom, and lab work. Total of 13 students in the course at anytime. Also had DHE-1 students with a total of 6 students with the information the same as above Instructors will use these results to find weaknesses in the student's skill level related to troubleshooting control boards. and using working training equipment. Student will need more time on the training boards with the electrical part to trainers. These results will help the instructors identify the areas that needs additional time of instruction and lab training. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. 9 : Student Learning Students can learn to interpret advanced HVAC electrical diagrams. With proper wiring of the components and knowing the component symbols of advance equipment for HVAC. Using Training boards and working training equipment in the lab for advanced HVAC electrical training on electrical diagrams. Student will be able to attend a over all score of 80% trouble shooting advance compotes of the trainer Lab assessments using HVAC control boards, and quizzes on control boards. Students averaged 87% on be the control boards and the Quizzes. Also had DHE-1 students a total of 6 students with the information the same as above. 9 of 10 8/9/16, 3:20 PM
10 Students need more training on the advance boards trouble shooting the electoral theory of the advance side. These results will help the instructors to identify the areas that need additional time of instruction and lab training.
