5 Online Workbooks Students Guide Introduction Welcome to the Grammar and Beyond Online Workbooks! The URL for the Grammar and Beyond Online Workbooks is: Learning Management System The workbook is hosted on a Learning Management System (LMS) owned by Cambridge University Press. This system is essentially a website that holds the content of the workbook and allows you to do the exercises if you are logged in. Your teacher can check your scores, monitor your progress, and see your interactions with others in the class. It is easy to learn to use, and there are step-by step instructions in the sections below to help you. Benefits The online workbook is organized in the same way as your Student s Book so it will be easy for you to find the practice and exercises you are looking for. It contains the same exercises and materials as the print version of the workbook. Other benefits include: A variety of interactive exercise types. Immediate feedback on your answers. A range of ways to communicate with your teacher and other students so you can get help easily while you are working. The ability to see your scores so you can see how well you are doing. The ability to try exercises over and over again until you feel confident. Only the last score is recorded in the Progress section. Getting started Logging in for the First Time If you have an access code If you already have an access code, enter it in the box under New Users. Then click Submit code. 7 If you don t have an account yet, you can create an account using the box on the right. Fill in your details as prompted and click Submit. 9 You will need to create an account using the box on the right. Fill in your details as prompted and click Submit. Once you have logged in, scroll down to Get an Access Code. Click the Buy button next to the level you are taking. Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable 5

11 Joining a Class Once you have created your account and used your activation code, you will need to join a class. Your teacher might add you to a class manually. If this happens, you will see your class when you log in. If your teacher doesn t add you manually, he or she will give you a class code. 12 The Class Homepage On your homepage, you can see the Course contents on the left hand side. You can move through the workbook using this navigation, but once you move away from your homepage, this navigation will not be visible. 8 Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable

14 In the same area you will also see a Progress button and three buttons for communications menus (Feedback, Forum, and Comments). (These are described in more detail below in Communication on p. 16 and Tracking Your Progress on p. 18.) This bar is the class-specific bar. You use it to navigate around a specific class. Above it, you can see a separate bar with My Workbooks, My Tools, and Network. This is the general LMS bar. You use it to navigate between your classes and to access tools that are the same across all of your classes. 15 My Tools Click here to edit your profile and view your messages. Click Edit My Profile to add information to your profile, upload a picture or change your password. Your profile will not have an image until you upload one. Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable 11

16 My Network This shows the list of people in your network. You can only send and receive private messages to people in your network. To add people, type their names into the search bar. Results are shown in three tabs: Courses, People, and Content. Switch to People to see who matches your search. You will only see other users who are also using a Ventures Online Workbook. Click the second icon next to the person s name to send an invitation to join your network. The invitation will appear in their messages under My Tools. 17 When they have accepted the invitation you will be able to send private messages to each other. Content Content is organized into sections corresponding to the Student s Book. On the Class Homepage, these sections are listed on the left, but once you begin working through the content, the list disappears and you can navigate using the Content Navigation button on the toolbar. Activity Types There are various activity types available to help you practice the language skills you learned in class. Categorize These exercises ask you to put words into categories to test your understanding of vocabulary and grammar. Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable 13

18 Fill- in- the- blank These exercises can be done by typing in the answer, selecting the answer from a drop down menu, or dragging and dropping the answer from a list of possibilities. 19 Matching These are exercises to match words to meanings or questions to answers. Click on the shaded bars to select matching items. Reordering These are drag and drop exercises to reorder words in a sentence or letters in a word to practice grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable 15

20 Multiple Choice These exercises can be radio buttons, drop down menus, or highlighting. They are used for practicing a variety of language points. Radio buttons Click on the button next to the correct answer. 21 Highlighting Click on the words to highlight them. Submitting When you have finished working, you can click Submit at the end of each exercise. If you need to navigate away from the page you are working on, but are not finished working, you can click Save as draft. When you click Submit, your scores will be saved in Progress. 22 Communication Sometimes studying at home can feel lonely, but it is important to remember that studying online does not always mean studying alone. The communicative features give you a lot of practice in communicating with your classmates in a natural way. This helps you make friends in the class and learn from different perspectives on the topics you are studying. Your classmates can be a great help to you when you are having problems, and you can be a great help to them, too, by communicating in the forums. There are three forms of communication on the Online Workbook: Comments (public comments on an activity), Feedback (private comments to a teacher on an activity), and the Forum (public conversations). Comments At the end of each page there is a section where you can leave comments about the exercises you have just done. These are visible to your teacher and the rest of the class. Anyone can leave a comment or respond to previous comments. When someone leaves a comment you will receive notification of it in the Comments Section of the Homepage. A star indicates an unread comment. You can click on the page title to go directly to the comment. 18 Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable

23 Feedback Using the Feedback button at the top of the page, you can communicate with the teacher privately. Feedback messages are then visible at the top of the page and a notification that a new message is available will appear in your New feed on the Homepage. Forum The forum is visible to all students and teachers enrolled in the class. It is used for more general discussions or troubleshooting. The forum contains multiple threads or topics. Anyone can start a new thread by clicking New Thread. When someone has posted to a thread, it will appear in your New feed on your Homepage. Cambridge University Press 2014 Photocopiable 19

24 Tracking Your Progress Click Progress to see your scores. Here you can see your scores for each activity. Your teacher can see these, too. A green bar indicates a score of 70% or above.
