2 Course Description/Overview The Statistics course is designed as an elementary course. It will apply a lot of Mathematics skills and extend the mathematical research of real life problems and situations. The course will include a study of Measures, Probability, Binomial Distribution, Estimations and many others. The MS Excel application will be used for some applications. Credits: 3. You ll be able to find the electronic version of the book, the homework and all other assignments. See the Attached Sheet with information. College Online Webpage Virtual Campus/D2L (Desire 2 Learn) Log-in via D2L online.brazosport.edu and find the course. There will be your electronic Syllabus, Course Content and more. Required Materials: Access to PC. Key/Access for MyMathLab (ISBN: ) code to coursecompass.com, as well as to BC online courses (D2L) via Once access is granted, you ll have an electronic version of the textbook used. Optional: Graphing Calculator, TI 83/84 plus or equivalent. It is the student s responsibility to have basic knowledge about using his/her own calculator. Required course materials are available at the Brazosport College bookstore, on campus or online at A student of this institution is not under any obligation to purchase a resource from the college bookstore. The same resource is/may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Prerequisites: Basic skills in algebra are required. These include, but are not limited to, operations with numbers, set theory, logic and geometry. Basic skills in using PC, MS Office and Excel are required. Format The course is designed as an online course. There will be no face-to-face instructional meetings. All the discussions will take place and posted on D2L on the Discussion board. The Tests and the Exam must be taken in your higher education institution facilities (like Testing Center), and supervised by professional personnel. Assessments: During the Semester there will be several homework quizzes, Tests and one Final Exam. Check the attached Schedule for more details. No Make-Up is allowed under any circumstances, for any of the scheduled assignments. Grading Policy/Evaluation: The grades will be counted in the following way: Quizzes 25% Homework 15% Test(s) 40% Final Exam: 20% Quizzes: There will be several quizzes during the term. All of the quizzes are due online with coursecompass.com. Be sure you consult the schedule and don t miss any quiz. Every quiz has a time limit of 60 minutes and a maximum of 2 attempts. There is a due date/time for quizzes. The number of questions may vary. Please consult the attached schedule. No Make-Up is allowed under any circumstances.

3 Homework The assigned HW is listed on the schedule. All of the items are due online with coursecompass.com. There will be a due date (see Schedule). No time limit for the HW (except for the due date). Maximum number of attempts is 5 per question. The number of questions may vary. No Make-Up is allowed under any circumstances. Test(s) There will be 2 tests during the term. They are due online with coursecompass.com. Be sure you consult the schedule and don t miss any test. Every test has a time limit of 90 minutes and 1 attempt. There is a time frame stated in the Schedule. The number of questions may vary. No Make-Up is allowed under any circumstances. The tests must be proctored at a higher institution facility (like LAC) only. Please contact your institution prior, so that you can accommodate for taking the assignments under supervision. No other material or website access is allowed during the Tests, except for Graphing Calculator, Formula Sheets and scratch paper (provided by the proctor). The proctor must contact me at least 3 days in advance, by , so that I can send the information regarding the Test/Exam. Final Exam The Final Exam is mandatory and comprehensive. The Exam is online. The time limit is 120 minutes within the time frame stated in the Schedule. The Exam must be proctored at a higher institution facility (like LAC) only. Please contact your institution prior, so that you can accommodate for taking the assignment under supervision. No other material or website access is allowed during the Exam, except for Graphing Calculator, Excel blank document, Formula Sheets and scratch paper (provided by the proctor). No make-up is allowed for the Final. The proctor must contact me at least 3 days in advance, by , so that I can send the information regarding the Test/Exam. Grading Scale: Unless an announced in changes is made, the following scale will be applied for this course: A: ; B: 80-89; C: D: F: < 60. Dropping policy No dropping will be iapproved by the instructor at any time, unless extraordinary circumstances, official documented. To be eligible for a reinstatement, the student must bring official documents and have an average of at least 70% in his/her class participation. Time requirement: Taking into account the volume of the information and the homework assigned, a minimum of 10 hours a week outside of class is required. Miscellaneous During the HW, Quiz, Test and/or Exam, the student may use the Graphing Calculator 83/84 plus or equivalent. No other device is allowed to be used. During the Test or Exam, the student cannot use any external notes (except for an initially blank Excel document), formulas, etc. allowed by instructor. IMPORTANT: Any further information will be presented in class by the instructor and is the student s responsibility to be informed. Information may be provided via or posted on D2L under Discussion Board.

4 During a time frame for an online assignment, the instructor will not answer to any question that is related to that assignment, except for HW (Example: you have Quiz #4 and you score a low grade for the first attempt; trying to prepare for the next allowed attempt, in the meantime, you ask/post a question. The instructor will not answer to that until the time frame is expired). For each Test/Exam, the proctor must contact me at least 3 days in advance, by , so that I can send the information regarding the assignment. It is the student s responsibility to make these arrangements, so that the test/exam can be taken in proper conditions.

5 GENERAL INFORMATION MATH 1342 STATISTICS Course Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions Vocabulary of statistics 1.2. Sampling technique 2. Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data Describe the center of a data set using the measures of mean, median, and mode Measure the dispersion of a data set using the measures of range, variance, and standard deviation Use histograms and frequency distributions to present data 2.4. Use a five number summary and a box plot to present data 2.5. Other statistical graphs 2.6. Misleading vs. appropriate graphs 3. Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of probabilities and combinatorics Basic empirical and theoretical probabilities 3.2. Find the probability of an event using permutations and combinations Apply the addition and multiplication rules for finding probabilities Apply conditional probability to compound events. 4. Explain the role of probability in statistics. 5. Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables. (15%) 5.1. Turn off all cell phones! If your cell phone rings, your test will be removed. 6. All personal effects are to be put on the storage shelves outside of the testing room. Some cages have locks. 7. You cannot leave the testing area once your test has begun without arrangements with the proctor. 8. The testing staff will strictly enforce your instructor s test directions, including the use of supporting material (calculators, dictionary, notes, etc.), time limits, and date restrictions. All written and scratch work must be done on paper provided by Learning Services staff or your instructor. 9. The Learning Services does not grade any of the tests. Contact your teacher for test results. 10. Students with special needs should notify the Learning Services staff prior to the testing period. Instructors must provide information indicating any special requirements. 11.
