2 Text and Supplies: Human Development - A Lifespan View (6thEdition), Kail & Cavanaugh, Wadsworth, 2013 KCTCS General Education Competencies Students should prepare for twenty- first century challenges by gaining: A. Knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural worlds through study in the sciences and mathematics, social sciences, humanities, histories, languages, and the arts. A pretest/post test will be used to measure this competency. Upon the first week of class and at the conclusion of the class an assessment will be adminstered to all students. The results are compared to determine student's progress. B. Intellectual and practical skills, including inquiry and analysis critical and creative thinking written and oral communication quantitative literacy information literacy teamwork and problem solving C. Personal and social responsibility, including civic knowledge and engagement (local and global) intercultural knowledge and competence ethical reasoning and action foundations and skills for lifelong learning D. Integrative and applied learning, including synthesis and advanced accomplishment across general and...specialized skills. Course Specific Competencies (Student Outcomes): Upon completion of this course, the student can: 1. Display knowledge of fundamental theories of developmental psychology. 2. Describe research methods and designs used in developmental psychology. 3. Describe developmental processes occurring during the course of the lifespan within the physical, cognitive, and psycho- social domains. 4. Explain how human development is influenced by various impacts such as culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or gender.

4 The instructional methods for this class will include discussions, electronic media, activities, writing assignments, and exams Technology/Media Component: Electronic media will be used to aid in reinforceing information from the text. Students will be expected to contact the instructor through the use of . Finally, discussion groups will be conducted weekly online. Service- Learning: Course Requirements and Evaluation: Exams: There will be a total of 2 exams given throughout the semester(midterm and final). These exams will be based on material covered in class and in the textbook. No make- up exams will be given unless prior arrangements have been made with your instructor. If the student knows s/he is going to be absent for a scheduled test, it is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor, and a make- up exam can be negotiated/scheduled or all the points will be lost. Grading Policy: The final grade in this course will be determined based on the total number of points accumulated from the exams, paper, and class presentation plus the points accrued from any extra credit work and attendance/participation. Exams (Midterm and Final 125 points each) SEE- I (150 points) Learning Assessments (50 points) Class Participation (50 points) The final grade will be determined using the following grading scale: A = points B = points C = points D = points E=299-0 points W = Withdrawal Attendance Policy: Regular attendance is necessary for the successful completion of this class. If in the event a student needs to miss, It is their responsibility to get any notes, assignments, etc. that were missed. A signin sheet will be circulated in each class meeting and will need to be signed by each student before they leave. The instructor will note individuals with excessive tardiness and absenteeism. Missed Exam Policy: In the event a student misses a scheduled Test, it is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor, so a make- up exam can be negotiated/scheduled within a week s time or all the points will be lost. The same procedure will apply for an unplanned absence on an assigned Test day, and will require some form of communication with the instructor to this effect, or the make- up will be left to the discretion of the instructor. Late Assignment Policy: No late assignments or extra credit opportunities will be accepted. Withdrawal Policy: Students may withdraw from class at their discretion and receive a grade of W up until mid- term. After the mid- term date through the end of the semester, your instructor will allow students to withdraw with a grade of W only if the student is currently passing with a grade of 60% or higher. Students wishing to withdraw who do not fit
5 each of these criteria will not be permitted to do so and will receive an E grade at the end of the semester.
