1 6 th Grade News From Miss Alanis English, Bible, Health/PE, Art May 7 th, 2018 TO THE STUDENT & PARENTS: Astrocamp is quickly approaching! Please complete payment to the office $250 by May 15 th!!!! Packing list: shirts, pants/shorts, shoes (suitable for A LOT of walking), jackets/sweatshirts, underwear, socks, sleepwear, towels (for bathing and pool), swim suit, wash cloths, shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothbrush/toothpaste, sleeping bag/blankets, pillow, refillable WATER BOTTLE, flashlight, lip balm, insect repellent, hat (to block out sun), sunscreen, camera (not on a phone), plastic bag for wet clothes-do NOT OVERPACK Don't forget to pack a lunch for the day we depart, but remember there is no food or drinks allowed in Astrocamp after our designated lunch time upon arrival, so only pack what your child will eat in one sitting. REMEMBER THERE ARE NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED. This a rule from Astrocamp, so we want to respect their rules. I believe you all have Mr. Frazier's number, and I am available through Facebook Messenger and . We are in class from 7am until 10pm so be patient with response time. Turn in ALL assignments, study for tests, and double check EVERYTHING you turn in! REMEMBER THE END OF THE YEAR IS NEAR! Check Grades on Igrade at least once a week!!! Assignment Details & Tips: English: Spelling/Vocabulary: Students must know the spelling of each vocabulary word as well as the definition. For the test on Friday, they must know how to use the words in a sentence. Students will need to complete List 20 in their Wordly Wise books. Grammar: Students will have completed pages in their Language C book by Friday. Most of this is done in class, however, it may be sent home if corrections are needed to improve grades and help students gain a better understanding of a concept. All tests will be open notes. (Pop Quizzes may occur at any time.) I am encouraging students to review what has been done in class, to really get it. Reading : The book we are reading is Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton. We will be summarizing each chapter, as well as discussion real-life applications of the text. Read and Think Reading Comprehension quizzes will be given. If students receive a 50% or below they must redo them by the date given on the page, and the two grades will be averaged for a final grade. Writing: This week and next week students students will be writing an essay based off of their Read and Think Sheets. They will have 10 minutes to read the story and answer the questions, and then 40 minutes to create a five paragraph essay in-class. These will take place on Monday, and Tuesday. Health: We are beginning our unit on our Body Systems. We will be taking notes, doing worksheets, and reading from our Health Books. Bible: We will continue our Study on the Book Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton. The Bible sermon will be based on Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. By THURSDAY they must 1. explain the verse, 2. find ONE supporting verse and explain its connection, 3. find a supporting Bible story and explain the connection, 4. say a supporting true story/illustration/factual information/quotations 5. explain how it applies to their life, 6. explain how to apply it to the audience lives (call to action) Physical Education: In P.E. We will be continuing our physical fitness routines. Students must complete running the MILE in under 13 minutes, record their times in their PE journal, and show effort in each PE class. Students must also wear the correct running/athletic shoes. Failure to do so, will affect their grade. The Arts: This week we will continue our short study on Art Movements throughout history. With each movement students will be required to take notes, and complete a project. Students will also need to write a short paragraph using art terms (line, color, space, shape, form, value, texture) describing their completed project. In addition to answering the questions at the end of each story and poem, students are required to find the following information: title, author, theme/supporting lines, particular lines/actions propelled,mood/keywords that create it, poem structure, similar to other text, point of view (creates what effects), setting, protagonist, other characters, climax, resolution, major events, key items/ideas. These must be clearly labeled and done in their Literature Journals. We usually read a story and poem every day. All tests and quizzes will be open notes, so it is important to keep up with daily Literature stories/poems. Reading : We will be reading from the book The Old Man and The Sea. We will be practicing four active reading strategies. First, we will be writing down any unknown word, to increase our vocabulary. Second, we will be searching for themes, and supporting them with quotes from the book. Third, we will make connections with other texts (IE. Books, short stories, quotes, historical/scientific facts...) Fourth, we will be creating thoughtful questions. Writing: This week students will be writing an essay on Bullying. They must describe/define the different types of bulling, and use quotes, examples, statistics and real life connections to complete this five paragraph essay. It must be typed- double spaced 12 font. It is due Wednesday. (This essay will count for an English and Health grade.) Next week Student's must choose 3 Literature Stories and connect them with themes. Be sure to include quotes, and BRIEF summaries of each story. This will need to be typed-double spaced, 12 font, and is due next TUESDAY. Health: We are continuing an anti-bullying unit in Health. Students will define bullying, search for ways to combat it, and will eventually create and sign an anti-bullying contract. Monday's will be Exercise H (p293); Tuesday's will be Exercise F (p297). When student's return from AstroCamp they will need to write a five paragraphs informative essay about Astrocamp.
