1 Welcome to 8 th Grade! June 2018 During the summer, school supplies go on sale, so this will be the perfect time to buy what you need for a successful school year. Each class has certain requirements: GENERAL SUPPLIES - Writing utensils, earbuds, one folder for home/school communication SCIENCE Earbuds, two 2-subject notebooks, 2 pocket folder, lots of pens and pencils MATH - A TI-34 multiview calculator is helpful to have at home for homework but not required; composition notebook, a 1-subject notebook, and lots of pencils LANGUAGE ARTS Earbuds (that can stay in school), 2 pocket folders, box of pencils, package of post-its SOCIAL STUDIES 2 pocket folder, earbuds, optional 2 or 3 subject notebook if student prefers to take handwritten notes opposed to taking notes in Google docs. OPTIONAL SUPPLIES - Chromebook case/carrier, pencil box/case, tissues, disinfectant wipes, and hand sanitizer for classroom. SUMMER READING for ALL LANGUAGE ARTS CLASSES: Summer is the perfect time to try and learn something new. Learning never stops, so during the summer you will need to do some reading. Try to read as much as you can. You should read books, magazines, and newspapers. Remember: the more you read, the better reader and writer you become and the more knowledge you gain. Choose a book to read! Any genre, fiction or nonfiction, is acceptable, as long as it is a book that your child s current teacher would approve for your child s reading level and interests. There will be graded assignments in September in Language Arts classes using the book, and it is required for all eighth graders. All students must read a book of their choosing that is on their current reading level. This would be a book that your current teacher would select or approve for you to read. As you read, complete the corresponding graphic organizer for the fiction or nonfiction book you have chosen to read. There are separate forms for fiction (Narrative) and nonfiction (Informational). You will use this information for a writing assignment that you will write in class during the first week of school. You may fill in the guided reading electronically, but you must PRINT a copy before you start school. Please choose a book that has not been made into a movie, and has not been read in school. It can be that you liked it, did not like it, questions you might have, something it reminded you of, etc. DRAW IT! Illustrate a scene from the book! Use color! The Facts List three facts from the text:
3 How do you know? What was the author s purpose of writing this text? (Why did he or she write it?) Remember--Easy as P.I.E. <Persuade, Inform, Entertain> Circle one: PERSUADE - INFORM - ENTERTAIN How is the text organized? CIRCLE ONE box using the descriptions provided. DESCRIPTION SEQUENCE & ORDER COMPARE & CONTRAST CAUSE & EFFECT PROBLEM & SOLUTION A topic, idea, person, place or thing is described by listing its features, characteristics, or examples. Describes items or events in order or tells the steps to follow to do something or make something. Shows how two or more things are alike and/or how they are different. Cause is why something happened. Effect is what happened. (Sometimes the effect is listed first.) Tells about a problem (and sometimes says why there is a problem) then gives one or more possible solutions. What specific topic, person, idea, or thing is being described? How is it being described (what does it look like, how does it work, what does it do, etc.)? What is important to remember about it? What items, events, or steps are listed? Do they have to happen in this order? Do they always happen in this order? What things are being compared? In what ways are they alike? In what ways are they different? What happened? Why did it happen? What caused it to happen? What is the problem? Why is this a problem? Is anything being done to try to solve the problem? What can be done to solve the problem? What did the text have?
