1 Honors Pre-Calculus Syllabus Instructor: Mrs. Hankollari Course Overview: The purpose of the course is to provide students with a brief review of algebra, further explore and analyze in depth algebra topics, and introduce students to Trigonometry. In particular, this course will help students to gain a comprehensive understanding the following topics: Learn the fundamental concepts of algebra, trigonometry, and analytical geometry. Understand the properties and graphs of different functions. Be able to use the above concepts to efficiently solve real world problems. In class participation is expected. This includes but not limited to: asking questions, answering questions, group discussions, and presentations. This course will focus not only on learning the necessary skills and operations, but also on the mathematical theories and implications of the concepts. You will learn critical reading and thinking skills, how to express yourself, both verbally and in writing, and how to manage your time and learn math effectively. This will NOT be a watch what I do, do what I do course. You will be actively involved in creating your own thought process. Tests will not be carbon copies of the review or practice tests. In order to better assess students understanding, students will be required to apply the information they have learned in a new context within chapter s framework. They will also be asked to explain and evaluate, in writing, various theories and mathematical concepts. Throughout the year, students will develop skills that will be valuable for any future mathematics courses they decide to enroll, such as: AP calculus, AP statistics, or any similar college mathematics course. 2 Materals: Pencil with eraser Colored pencils Binder - preferably 1 1/2 inch with 3 dividers Loose paper Earphones Graphic Calculator TI- 89 preferable, TI-84 or TI-83. **All materials are required to be brought to class with you every day!* Grading Policy: Your class grade is broken up into three categories with the respective weights. Daily Homework and Assignments (one grade) All homework assignments will be due in completion at the start of the next class meeting or by the due date if it is online. Late homework will NOT be accepted without a reasonable excuse. For the online homework you will be allowed to turn in late, however 20 % of the grade will be deducted that is for a perfectly done late homework the maximum grade you can get is B. If the assignments are on paper then they should be done in pencil. The goal of this class is not simply right answers but learning processes and logic. Therefore, each math problem must be written on the paper, the calculations and formulas written out showing the logic and answers circled. Problems on any assignment with just answers on them will NOT receive any credit. Quizzes (two grade) Quizzes will be given at least once a week and may or may not be announced ahead of time. Quizzes will be testing concepts covert in your previews homework assignment. Test (three grades) Test will be given at the end of each chapter and will be announced at least three days ahead of time. Grading Scale: A = B = C = D = F = 60and below

3 Absentees: If a student is absent from class, it is his/her responsibility to contact the teacher and ask for any make up work or missing assignment. For each day missed you will have that many days to complete the assignment. For example, if you are absent on Monday (and it was excused!), you see me on Tuesday and the assignment will be due on Wednesday. If you are unexcused, all missed worked will be given a zero with the exception of tests. If a student is absent and did not miss any quizzes or tests then he can check the agenda of the missing day online through Mrs. Hankollari s website at teachers.dadeschools.net/khankollari. Tardy Policy: You will be considered tardy if you are NOT in your assigned seat when the bell rings. 1st Tardy - Everyone can be late once 2nd Tardy- Warning 3rd Tardy - Parent contact 4rth Tardy Detention and parent contact. Pass Policy: You may request to use a pass at an appropriate time during class. Do not interrupt the lecture unless in an emergency. One hall pass will be used; therefore students will live the class one at the time. Classroom Expectations: Students should be in their seat at the beginning of class and ready to learn with all necessary materials. Students should raise their hand to ask for permission to leave their seat Students should have their homework assignments completed at the start of the class period on the day it is due. Respect yourself, your peers, and your teacher Keep a positive attitude!!

4 Consequences: Consequences will be given to students that misbehave during class. 1st Warning: Verbal Warning 2nd Warning: Parent contact 3rd Warning: Detention, parent contact, and Administrative referral.
