You will learn about a vast array of topics inherently interesting in understanding ourselves and those around us. You will examine the evolution of psychology as a science, the science and pseudoscience in psychology, its research methods, and the relationship between biology and psychology. You will also examine such topics as: sensation and perception, consciousness, learning, memory, language, thinking, reasoning, intelligence, IQ Testing, emotion, motivation, stress, coping and health, social psychology, personality, psychological disorders and the psychological and biological treatments used to treat these disorders. Calendar: First day for this class Thursday, August 29; Labor Day Monday, September 2 (NO CLASSES); Thanksgiving recess: Thursday and Friday, November 28-29; Last class day for Fall Semester for this class: Wednesday, December 4; Final Exam for this class: Thursday, December 12. Credit Transfer: If students are planning to transfer this credit, they must check in advance with the particular college to which they plan to transfer credit. (If it is an academic course, note that state rules require that the course be transferable to any state institution.) Prerequisites: Reading and writing TASP restricted.

You will also need a highlighter and 4 scan trons. Course Objectives: Taken from the APA Task Force on Undergraduate Psychology Major Competences Student Learning Outcomes: The student will: 1. Demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. 2. Understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation. 3. Respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes. 4. Value empirical evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a science. 6. Demonstrate information competence and the ability to use computers and other technology for many purposes. 7. Communicate effectively in a variety of formats. 8. Recognize, understand, and respect the complexity of sociocultural and international diversity. 9. Develop insight into their own and others behavior and mental process and apply effective strategies for self-management and self-improvement. 10. Pursue realistic ideas about how to implement their psychological knowledge, skills, and values in occupational pursuits in a variety of settings. Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is a process involving higher order thinking skills. These skills include, but are not limited to, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of factual information. Lamar State College Orange Advances Critical Thinking Skills (LSC- O ACTS) through assignments of varying natures within the course that are designed to challenge and improve the student s critical thinking processes. A well cultivated critical thinker: Raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely; Gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively Comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards; Thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of though, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implication, and practical consequences; and Communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems. Dillon Beah: The Foundation for Critical Thinking Evaluation: There will be two components to your course grade. (1) You will have four major exams, comprising four-fifths of your grade. (2) You will have a primary source reading that corresponds to each unit of study. You will prepare a written summary over each primary source and use that summary to answer questions over your reading; the average of these three (summaries plus questions) grades will comprise the last fifth of your grade

3 What is on the exam? Each multiple choice test will be based on assigned readings, lectures, and classroom activities. Questions are designed to test a student's knowledge of the material and the student's ability to think critically and apply this knowledge Course Outline and Testing Schedule: Tentative dates are Sept. 19, Sept. 26, Oct. 31, and Dec. 5; see page 5 for detailed calendar. Policy on an Incomplete Grade: The grade of I may be given when any requirement of the course, including final examination, is not completed with instructor approval. Arrangements to complete deficiencies in a course must be LAMAR STATE COLLEGE-ORANGE Fall, 2013 page 3 made with the instructor. Incomplete work must be finished during the next long semester; if not, the Admissions and Records Office must change the I grade to the grade of F. The course must then be repeated, if credit is desired. An I grade also automatically becomes an F if the student registers for the course before removing the deficiencies and receiving a grade change. The instructor may record the grade of F for a student who is absent from the final examination and/or is not passing the course. Procedure for Review of Test Grades: If you have a question about a grade, please contact me within a week of receiving that grade (or before the next week s class period) to discuss the problem. Make-up Policy: If a student misses a major exam, he or she should contact the instructor as soon as possible to discuss make-up options. A student may only make-up one exam, and this will be done in the testing center before the next class meeting. Classroom Policies: 1. Class time ends at 8:45 p.m. and students should expect to be in class the entire time. 2. Any beepers or phones must be turned off during the class. 3. Water or cold drinks are permitted, but food and tobacco produces are not allowed during class; you will be given a short break about mid-way through the block to acquire drinks, snacks, or go outside to smoke. If you know you must leave class early, please inform the instructor of this before class. Academic Honesty: LSC-O will not tolerate cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as taking and using as one's own the writings or ideas of another. Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing, or aiding another student in cheating or plagiarizing on a quiz, test, individual assignment, or examination will receive an F for the course. Students subject to penalty due to academic dishonesty have the right

4 to appeal to the department chair and eventually to the dean and/or academic vice president before imposition of the penalty. Attendance Policy: This class will meet 15 times, beginning at 6:00 p.m., breaking from about 7:20 to 7:30, and resuming class from 7:30 until 8:45. Each HALF of the class counts as one class period, or a total of 30 class periods; attendance will be taken at the beginning of the period and after the break. Student with Disabilities: Any student with a verifiable learning or physical disability who requires course modification must speak to the instructor in private regarding the disability. A request for accommodation must be made through the ADA Counselor and submitted to the instructor no later than the third (3 rd ) class day LAMAR STATE COLLEGE-ORANGE Fall, 2013 page 4 Withdrawals and Drops: Students who drop/withdraw by last day to drop/ withdraw without penalty will receive a Q for the class. Students who drop by the last day to drop/withdraw will receive a Q if passing the class or may receive an F if failing based on the instructor s discretion. Never attending or ceasing to attend classes DOES NOT constitute a withdrawal or drop. You remain registered until you file a Drop/Withdrawal Form at the Registrar's Office by the appropriate deadlines. Failure to act in a timely manner will result in an "F" grade for the course. It is the student's responsibility to turn in all Drop/Withdrawal Forms and follow up to ensure that they were processed as desired. Drug-Free Campus Policy: Lamar State College Orange prohibits the possession or use of illegal drugs or alcohol by students on campus or while representing the college at off campus student events. Violations of this policy will result in dismissal from the college. Children in the Classroom: The LSC-O Student Handbook specifies that no children under the age of 15 are allowed in the classroom or the hallways. Syllabus Content: The instructor reserves the right to make changes to this syllabus, if deemed necessary. All changes will be provided to the students orally or in writing before the implementation of the change.

5 Requirements for Written Summaries 1. Do NOT make a cover page ; put your name and the article number in the top right hand corner of each page 2. Articles must be a minimum of TWO typed pages, and no more than THREE pages 3. Must double space the content of your summary (NOT your title or your top corner info) 4. May NOT use a font size larger than 12 or less than Margins may NOT be more than one inch (or less than.5 inches) at the top, bottom, and on either side 6. You must use the APA citation format when putting your title at the top of the first page. You can find the author s name under the title of the article, and the remainder of the needed information at the very end of your article in very small print under the gray line. (see APA reminders below) NOTES for APA Citations when using APA citations (either as your title for my work OR when using in a bibliography on a formal paper) single space all lines -- indent the second and following lines 5 spaces or one half inch. use only the initials of the authors' first (and middle) names. if no author is given, start with the title and then the date put the year ONLY of the article after the author(s) name(s) capitalize only the first name of the article and none of the words thereafter (unless it is name of something like a movie or state or country, etc.) you italicize ONLY the name of the magazine (NOT the title of the article) if you are using a typewriter that cannot produce italics, then use underlining instead do NOT write vol. for volume or no. for issue number --- just boldface, like 18(2) do not write page or pp or p.just the numbers, like spell-check your work before turning it in indent 5 spaces every time you start a new paragraph SEE EXAMPLE BELOW this is how your paper would look using a 12 point font, with.5 margins Your Name Article #1 Adams, G.A., Prescher, J., Beehr. Results indicated that organizational commitment was negatively related to retirement intent.
