1 Principal s Message October 2018 Mustangs Centerville Jr. High Fremont Blvd. Fremont, CA Phone: Fax: Website: MISSION STATEMENT The mission of our school is to ensure that each student holds the skills needed to strategically problem solve and is prepared to contribute and thrive in the 21 st century work force. Each student will demonstrate mastery of common core standards through ongoing, authentic and varying assessments. We will ensure this by means of real-world application and through a multifaceted system of support. We have experienced an excellent beginning to what will be a productive school year. The students have been most cooperative and enthusiastic. We are very proud of our students, staff, community, and school. The Centerville faculty and staff is looking forward to a productive and successful school year. Back to school night on September 5 th was a terrific success. It was wonderful to see so many parents attending and contributing to the already strong Centerville school community. We encourage every family to continue being engaged in the Centerville community. In our late August professional development meetings, our faculty created a why statement. This statement really speaks to the staff and faculty hopes, wishes, and dreams, for every student: To empower students to become the best version of themselves so that they reach their potential and become positive contributing members of society. You are an important member of the Centerville team in helping us to reach this goal. Through teamwork, open communication, and dedication to continuous improvement, we can ensure that Centerville continues to be a school where children enjoy learning. An important part of this equation is communication. If needed, please don t hesitate to contact your child s teachers, counselor, or administrators so we can assist you. Our first PTSA meeting was held on September 19 th. During this meeting everyone participated in a feedback session regarding the portrait of a Fremont USD graduate. The participants discussed what every graduate should know and do upon finishing their FUSD program. This is the same exercise we have used for our faculty and staff. Student representatives may also be taking part in this type of feedback session. When completed we will be sharing our portraits with Dr. Wallace, Fremont USD Superintendent. I encourage all parents to join the PTSA and participate in the upcoming meetings. The next Centerville PTSA meeting is on November 7, from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Centerville Library. On Thursday, October 25 th from 8:15 AM-9:15 AM, Assistant Principal Dr. Ray Raskop, and I will be hosting a Parent Coffee Hour. This is an opportunity to meet other parents and talk with the administrative team about all of the wonderful things happening at Centerville. We ll see you there. On behalf of our faculty and staff, I would like to thank our Centerville parents for assisting during our MAZE Day. You took time away from your busy schedules to help, and we appreciate your dedication and commitment to Centerville. 2 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL The school year is well under way and we are off to a great start. Learning is taking place in all of our classes and the teachers are focused on teaching the California State Standards and implementing Common Core Lessons. In addition, there are lots of opportunities to get involved in a variety of activities that will provide fun and healthy learning experiences, including: clubs, team sports and intramural sports. Get involved! It will make your student s years at Centerville more enjoyable and memorable. I encourage parents to review school rules with their children. Our overall schoolwide rules are: Respect, Responsible, and Ready to learn. Detailed rules and discipline can be found in the HAB found in the Homework Assignment Book (HAB) and the Parent/Guardian Student Handbook. Some of the more common infractions include being tardy to class, dress code violations, cell phones and electronic equipment being on or used during school day, and class disruptions. We are serious about enforcing the rules so that all students have the opportunity to learn and be successful at Centerville. Students will most likely have homework every weeknight. Keep an eye on the homework, and check the Homework Assignment Book (HAB) and School Loop for notes from the teacher and grade progress. It s a good practice for parents to sign the HAB at least once a week. Dr. Ray Raskop Assistant Principal

More information will be in the November newsletter. YEARBOOKS Yearbook cost goes up to $30 starting Oct 1 st. Order forms are available in the school office or you can order a yearbook online at Please use school code: SICK STUDENTS Reminder students who are vomiting or have a fever cannot be at school. If a student vomits here at school or develops a fever, they must be picked up by someone who is over 18 and listed on their emergency card. Students must stay home until they have been fever free (without the use of medications) for 24 hours or vomit free for 48 hours. Fever is defined as 100 F and above. Due to safety reasons, students cannot be released to walk home by themselves even if the parent or guardian wants to give permission for them to do so. PARENT GUIDE Centerville s Parent Guide has information regarding the calendar, discipline, contacting staff members, etc. Stop by the office and pick one up if you were unable to attend Back-to-School Night. HALLOWEEN DANCE The Halloween Dance will be held on October 31, 2:00-4:00 Dance Tickets will be on sale October 24 October 30 at lunch in F3. Dance tickets are never sold on the day of a dance. All students must have a signed ticket and student ID to enter the dance. ASB members are admitted free to the dance (be sure to pick up your dance ticket October 25-30, lunch, in F3). Non-ASB members pay $5 Replacement IDs can be purchased for $5 in the office. Replacement IDs are not sold on the day of the dance. Students are expected to stay for the whole dance. For appointments, etc, parents must check out their student at the gym doors.

4 TRUEGIFT.COM TrueGift is a small California nonprofit corporation implementing direct contributions of school supplies to individual classrooms. They allow teachers to request specific school supplies and ask donors to provide those supplies. Donors can give to TrueGift and specify where they want their donations to go, or they can give directly to a school or teacher listed on our website TITLE ONE PARENT NIGHT You are invited to the fourth annual Title I Parent Night here at Centerville Junior High School. This important event will take place in the school library on Wednesday, October 17th, 5:00-6:00 pm. This will be an informational night. You will be provided with the details about the Title I program and the services that will be provided to your Title I student throughout the school year to promote academic success. We will also be providing all parents with the assistance in getting signed up with School Loop, our online grading system utilized by a majority of our teachers. Light refreshments and babysitting will be provided free of charge. Please mark your calendars and we look forward to seeing you there. DONORSCHOOSE.ORG Donors Choose is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help students in need. Teachers post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. Parents can browse project requests and give any amount to the project of their choice. A note from Mr. Marshall Parents please consider donating to teacher projects on Donors Choose. As I write this, there are three active projects that could use your help! Please follow this link ( to see all current projects for Centerville. I know I speak for all the teachers using Donors Choose when I say, "Thank you VERY MUCH for your continued support of our classrooms!" RED RIBBON WEEK NECKLACES ON SALE SOON! Merit Club will be selling Red Ribbon Week necklaces as Centerville celebrates Red Ribbon Week. Cost is $1. Approximately 1/3 of the necklaces will be prize necklaces. Buy several and increase your chances of winning! Sale starts on October 22 nd in F3 at lunch.

5 AMC 8 (American Math Competition 8 th grade curriculum) If your child would like to participate in the upcoming math contest, AMC 8, they must sign up by September 28 th. The contest is held onsite on Tuesday, November 13 th (sorry no make-ups allowed). Cost to enter is $4. Please return the form below along with your $4 donation to either your child s math teacher or Mrs. Fields in F3. Hope you are intrigued by this opportunity! 7 Centerville Jr. High School School Loop Parent Registration Help Registering for your free School Loop account is easy and only takes 1 minute. You will need your child s student ID number to complete the registration form. A student s ID number can typically be found on their student ID card, schedule or last report card. Go to the FUSD School Loop website Click the Register Now button. Click the link for Parent Registration. Complete the form. Click the Register button. You are now registered! The first time you login, you will be asked to read and acknowledge a User Agreement. Once logged in, you can add your other children to your account if they attend the same school. Click on the Add Student link in the My Student section at the top of the right column on your portal homepage. With your School Loop account, you may access details about your child s classes and assignments. In addition, School Loop will automatically send a daily update to your personal each day at approximately 5pm. School Loop is safe and secure because all members publish in their own names. All information you provide is kept private, including your address. Please Note: To see your student s grades, your account must first be approved by a school administrator. Each school has its own policy for approving parent accounts. Please contact a teacher or administrator at the school for more information. School Loop Support may not approve parent accounts and does not maintain information about each schools approval policy.

This year s theme is Heroes Around Me. Students can start their work in any of the below six categories with this theme in mind! This year ( ) is also special as it is Reflection s 50 th Anniversary! We have a fun goal of getting at least 50 entries per school, so let us get started!
