1 MATH 410 Section Elementary Algebra Syllabus Instructor: M. Alif Wardak Office Hours: Mon/Wed: 11:30 am 12:30 pm Office: HS Tues/Thurs: 2:00 pm 3:30 pm alif.wardak@chaffey.edu And by Appointment Phone: (909) COURSE INFORMATION Math 410 Section # is a 4-unit semester course. Prerequisite: Math 520 or Math 521 or eligibility for Math 410 as determined by Chaffey Assessment Process Textbook: Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, (4 th Edition) by Martin-Gay with Access Code Class Meeting Time: Tuesdays/Thursdays from 10:00 am 11:50 am in VSS 109. COURSE CONTENT Topics covered include the fundamental algebraic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including factoring, rational expressions and their operations, solutions, and applications to solving equations and word problems. Equations of two variables will include the introduction of functions, graphing linear and quadratic equations. There will also be operations with rational exponents including radical expressions and equations. ATTENDANCE Attendance is required for every class. Missing four (4) class meetings or (3) unexcused consecutive class meetings will result in your being dropped. I may grant exceptions for valid excuses, as outlined under Absence from Scheduled Quizzes and Exams below. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to be aware of the Deadline for Dropping the course October 31 st. Instructors have the right to drop students for failing to show up for class for the first class meeting. Please contact me before considering dropping. Attendance is taken by an in class assignment and/or by the passing of a sheet to be signed. The attendance may be done at the beginning and/or at the end of class. Anyone arriving late or leaving early may miss these opportunities to be counted present. ABSENCE FROM SCHEDULED QUIZZES AND EXAMS No makeup for the quiz, test, or final exam will be given unless you are absent with permission from me. Excused Absence from an Exam: An absence will be excused if you or your designee contact me via or at ASAP before the start of the scheduled exam and provide a reason for the absence that is acceptable to me. Acceptable reasons include but are not limited to illness or family emergency. Vacation is not an acceptable reason. If a test is missed without an excused absence your grade will be zero for that test.

2 HOMEWORK You will need to purchase a MyMathLab access code to complete the homework assignments. New books contain an access code, but if you have purchased a used book, you will need to purchase an access code through Chaffey College s bookstore. All homework to be completed through MyMathLab is mandatory. The assignments listed in the syllabus are optional and recommended. The Course ID is wardak Homework is due the day of the exam. All homework should be completed on MyMathLab and will be checked on exam day. If it is not completed when checked, you will not receive credit for the homework. The homework listed in the syllabus is optional and does not need to be turned in. No late homework will be accepted. You will not have access to past assignments once the due date has expired. Each homework set will be worth 25 points, for a total of 100 points. TESTING & QUIZZES There will be 4 exams and 4 quizzes; there are no make-up exams or quizzes. At the end of the semester, your lowest quiz score will be dropped. There will be one comprehensive final exam Thursday, December 15 th from 8:45 am to 11:15 am in VSS Accepting any phone calls, text messages, or use of the restroom during any quiz or exam will result in confiscation of the exam. Any student who exhibits this behavior will not have an opportunity to finish their quiz or exam. Please make all phone calls or send all text messages before or after class. If you have any questions about your exam grade, you have 7 days (1 week) from the date you receive your exam back to approach me with any corrections/questions. As per school policy, this is a No Calculator course. You will not be allowed to use any calculators on exams or quizzes. All updates, reviews for exams, answers to the reviews, and announcements will be available on my website: BEHAVIOR, CHEATING, AND PLAGIARISM All members of the Chaffey College community are expected to behave in an ethical and moral fashion, respecting the human dignity of all members of this community and resisting behavior that may cause danger or harm to others which shall include, but is not limited to violence, theft or bigotry. The use of same will be considered cheating and will result in a zero (0) for that test and will be reported to the appropriate office and you will be dismissed from the class on that day. Looking at someone else s test during the examination is also considered cheating and the above statement will also apply here.

3 CLASSROOM RULES Food(s) and/or Drink(s) are not allowed in the classroom, except water. Turn all cell phones or electronic devices off or place on silent. Class participation is always welcome except that talking to your neighbor or on your cell phone during the lecture will not be tolerated. The instructor has the right to re-seat anyone or dismiss them from that class for abusing this rule. Disruptions in the classroom take away from everyone s privilege to learn. The instructor has the right to re-seat anyone during a quiz or exam to ensure there is equal spacing between all students. Any classroom rule violation may result in classroom suspension and will be reported to the Dean of Discipline.
