COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to prepare students to navigate the college system and enhance opportunities for success. The course emphasizes college success strategies, self-assessment, goal setting, career exploration, effective study habits, campus resources, and efficient use of online tools for learning, education planning, and enrollment. B. COLLEGE 110 Policy As of Summer 2015, all students are required to successfully complete College Success (COLLG 110) during the first or second quarter of attendance. Students who do not pass (earn below a 2.0 grade) are required to re-take COLLG 110 the next quarter that they are enrolled. For the entire policy, see the Pierce College course catalog C. COURSE OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, learners should be able to: 1) Continually assess individual strengths, skills, characteristics and interests in order to pursue personal, academic and career goals. 2) Identify and use college resources and services in order to aid in personal and academic success. 3) Utilize study skills in order to comprehend, retain, and apply class content. 4) Demonstrate productive self-monitoring habits in order to make sound decisions about personal, career, and academic choices. 5) Engage with peers, instructors, and college community in order to build culturally diverse relationships that foster personal, academic, and career success. 6) Apply their understanding of the rigorous expectations of college in order to achieve success as a student. D. COURSE REQUIREMENTS In order to stay on track throughout this course, you should turn in assignments, discussions, and quizzes per the due date of the assignment. You may work ahead but it will be difficult for you to catch up if you fall behind. You will accomplish your course outcomes (above) via the modules learning objectives. 2 E. REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS This course uses Open Educational Resources, OER, meaning all material will be made available to you at no cost. I will provide instructions on accessing the material in the course. F. COURSE GUIDANCE 1. Online: All assignments are submitted via Canvas. Critical Note: This IS NOT a self-paced course. It is rigorous, fast paced, and requires several hours per week to complete assignments effectively. While I ve made every effort to spread out the workload, good time management is critical. If you are unable to dedicate 6-7 hours per week, I highly encourage you to consider withdrawing now and re-enrolling at a later time when your schedule allows you to dedicate the necessary time. Note: A week runs Monday Sunday. 2. Response/Grading: you can expect that I will respond to your within 48 hours. I generally batch grade assignments/tests/quizzes shortly after the due date. Contact me if you have not heard from me within these timelines. 3. Attendance: Attendance points come from on-time assignment submissions and timely participation in class activities. If you miss more 3 sessions or fail to achieve a 2.0 GPA (75%), you may have to retake the course. I understand special situations (military duties, family obligations, work obligations, etc.) can prevent you from completing assignments on time and/or participating in online discussions. I am always willing to work with you to help you catch up and/or complete missed work. However, I consider it disrespectful, and thus I am less inclined to allow you to make-up work, when you miss assignments or fail to participate in class without communicating with me about your situation beforehand or in case of emergencies, as soon as possible. 4. Discussions: This course has discussions as part of the curriculum. Discussion Forums commonly require a posting of your comments and responding to other postings. You will be graded on participation, content and fulfillment of required posts and replies. Assignments and discussions can be accessed under Modules. Do not rely on the Calendar function go through the lesson module to access all instructions, materials, and assignments. 5. Course Incompletes/Extensions: These are not automatic and must be requested, approved, and arranged with me BEFORE the last week of class. All extensions are at my discretion, and I rarely grant them to students unless the student has (1) completed at least 66% of the course, (2) has a passing grade (75%) at the time of the request, and was prevented from completing the entire course by a justifiable cause (i.e. Beyond student s control). If I grant you an extension, but then work is not turned in by the agreed upon deadline, you will receive either (1) the original grade earned prior to the extension request or (2) a 0.0 grade for the course. Note: Most extensions will require a letter of verification from Commander, First Sergeant, Medical Provider, Employer, etc. 6. Withdrawals: Withdrawals are not automatic. In accordance with Pierce College policy, there is a published day to withdraw for a full refund and a last day to withdraw to receive a withdrawal (W) grade. 7. Student Responsibilities: Please remember that it is your responsibility to notify me of major changes in your circumstances (deployment, emergency, medical/work-related issues, etc.) that affect your ability to complete course work within course timelines. 3 8. Plagiarism software may be in use during this course Etiquette: Whether face-to-face or online, treat others, as you would like to be treated, respectfully and compassionately. G. GRADING POLICY & PROCEDURE Each assignment and assessment has a specific point value. The earned value of all possible points will determine your grade, per Pierce College published policy (see the Policies and Procedure section) Your final grade will be based on your successful completion of all assignments and your participation in and contributions to discussions. There is no extra credit or make-up work in this course. District Grading Policy: The following scale will be used to determine the final grade for this course: Percent of Total Points Letter Grade Grade Point A A B B B C C C D D <65 F 0.0 Your grade at the end of the quarter will be determined using the scale above. Please note that I DO NOT round up! So, a grade of 74.9 is not good enough you must score 75% in order to earn a 2.0. Throughout the quarter I will use Canvas to post your grades for assignments. H. STANDARDS FOR PERFORMANCE A. Student Responsibilities - The student will: Complete all assignments. Students are responsible for tracking their own assignments and following up with the instructor with concerns. Late assignments turned in without prior coordination will be penalized without exception. Students are accountable to turn in all work on time. Submit essays in a Word document using a 12 pt font with double spacing. In the upper left corner include your name and assignment number. Unless otherwise specified in an assignment use APA style to cite references you use in your answer if the thoughts and information are not your own, give credit where it is due. 4 Participate in the Discussion Forums by posting by the deadline given so others will have time to respond by the deadline. Classroom participation scores will be given based on student input. Use Spell Check and Grammar Check before posting in Discussion Forums or submitting essay assignments. In college work accuracy is critical. Use critical thinking skills to answer questions and in submitting assignments. You will be graded on the quality of your original thoughts in conjunction with your reading. Students may work ahead on assignments but need to participate in the Discussion Forums at the assigned time. B. Communications Students and instructors will use the Canvas system to communicate on issues regarding the course. For noncourse related communications, the Students must use their official Pierce College . I. ELECTRONIC DEVICES All electronic devices (phones, MP3 players, laptops, ipads, etc.) will be turned off or in silent mode during class, unless I have indicated that we will use these devices for a class activity. Please store these devices in your backpack, pocket, or purse during class. Electronic translator devices may be used as needed, but I reserve the right to request they be put away if I deem the device/use of device distracting. If you need to attend to an urgent issue that requires use of your phone, please quietly exit the classroom and rejoin us when you re finished. If in my opinion, your use of electronic devices becomes disruptive, I may prohibit your use of the device during class or instruct you to leave the room J. MAKE-UP & ASSIGNMENTS POLICY: Reading and course assignments are given in the syllabus and should be read/completed in preparation for activities. The student is responsible for all assigned course materials. Assignments, Quizzes, Extra Credit (if provided), and the Final Project are due by midnight on the due date assigned. Late work will only be accepted for full credit if prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. All assignments will be assessed a penalty of three points a day if prior arrangements have not been made. Late assignments will be given a zero point value if not received by three days after the due date without prior arrangements being made with the instructor. K. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY and PLAGIARISM Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned nor tolerated within the Pierce College system. Academic dishonesty is behavior in which a deliberately fraudulent misrepresentation is employed in an attempt to gain undeserved intellectual credit, either for oneself or for another. Academic misconduct is behavior that results in intellectual advantage obtained by violating specific standards, but without deliberate intent or use of fraudulent means. All references must be sited in APA format. Reference any documentation used to substantiate your answers. Any cut-and-paste answer should be in direct quotes with the appropriate reference given. Regarding plagiarism: 1. The first instance of plagiarism will result in 3 things: a) a warning, b) you having to complete a plagiarism tutorial, and c) a zero on the assignment containing the plagiarized material but with the opportunity to correct and resubmit that assignment for full credit. My goal here is to work with you to teach you what plagiarism is and how you can avoid it. (Hint: Don t copy answers for the activity sheets directly from the book, internet, study buddy or PowerPoint presentation; use your own words!!!) If you drop the course without having completed the plagiarism worksheet and COLL110 College Success Fall 2017 Syllabus Page 4 of 6

5 without having corrected the plagiarized assignment, your name will be entered into the Plagiarism Registry, along with the evidence used to determine that plagiarism has occurred. 2. The second instance of plagiarism will result in a zero for the assignment without the opportunity to correct and resubmit that assignment. 3. The third instance of plagiarism will result in a zero in the course and your name entered into your permanent records. L. SYLLABUS MODIFICATION STATEMENT: There may be new information, new activities, or training methods that would be appropriate and even valuable to integrate into your class. Therefore, Faculty has the right to change or modify the course syllabus materials during the academic year. Any changes will be shared with you. Every attempt will be made to provide those changes in writing. The date of the most recent revision will show in the footer of Syllabus document. M. GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSION FORUMS: As you read posted messages, think about what the writer is saying, and respond to the points you find especially important or interesting. Your participation is essential to the success of the class because your experiences are unique. By sharing your insights, you are helping your fellow class members learn through your experiences and also developing your critical thinking skills. The instructor reserves the right to delete messages that do not follow these guidelines. Discussion Forum Deadlines The instructor will deduct points for initial and reply postings that do not meet the deadline dates. After the Discussion Forum closes no posts will be permitted and the student will receive a score based on the work submitted. If there are mitigating circumstances, the Instructor may allow the student to submit alternate work. N. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN Call 911 and then Campus Safety in response to an imminent threat to persons or property. In the event of an evacuation (horns and strobes), gather all personal belongings and leave the building using the nearest available safe exit. Be prepared to be outside for one hour and stay a minimum of 200 feet from any building or structure. So long as it is safe to do so, students are expected to stay on campus and return to class after evacuations that last less than 15 minutes. Do not attempt to re-enter the building until instructed by an Evacuation Director (identified by orange vests). Please notify the nearest Evacuation Director of anyone left in the building or in need of assistance. If I m unable to attend class due to my own emergency or illness, I will do my best to send a Canvas message to the entire class in advance and have a sign posted on the door. O. INCLEMENT WEATHER If there is inclement weather your instructor will make adjustments as necessary to the course schedule as it affects the class activities. If you have already established accommodations with the ADS manager, please bring your approved accommodations (green sheet) to me at your earliest convenience so we can discuss your needs in this course. Reasonable accommodations are established through an interactive process between you and the ADS manager, and I am available to help facilitate them in this class. Q. COLL 110 COURSE SCHEDULE The Course Schedule is considered APPENDIX A to this document and is intended to be part of the course Syllabus. It is provided as a separate document so that the instructor can easily make necessary adjustments throughout the course. The most current Course Schedule will be posted in Canvas and students will be advised that there is a new posting through the Canvas Announcement function. If there is a difference between what is on the Course Schedule and what is in Canvas, then Canvas will prevail. Canvas is much easier to update on short notice and you should follow the instructions and due dates that are provided in Canvas. Advise your professor of the apparent disparity.
