IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 1 Opening TurningPoint 1. Start TurningPoint using one of two methods: Double-click the TurningPoint icon on your desktop OR Click Start > Programs > Turning Technologies, LLC > TurningPoint > TurningPoint 2006 Figure 1 2. If you want to create a presentation, then you are all set. If you are presenting one though, then you must configure the hardware, a quick process explained in the Configuring TurningPoint Hardware section.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 2 The TurningPoint Toolbar at a Glance Button What it does Reset your session. You must do this before you have a new session so that your results don t compound and get skewed. Open a presentation. This works the same way the regular open button does in PowerPoint. Insert a TurningPoint slide into your presentation. When clicked, a dropdown menu will appear with the various typed of charts or questions you would like on the slide. Insert various types of objects from Charts to organize your responses; Reminders* like countdowns, meters, tables, and the low-pressure Answer now picture; a way to mark correct answers and Stats that automatically tabulate in TurningPoint. * At least one Reminder is required for every TurningPoint slide you have. Display options are for the intermediate and advanced user. Here you can assign points to questions and many more options. From backing up sessions to displaying the charts automatically, this is a hidden hub of control in TurningPoint. Often, you ll use this button when your presentation is complete, use this button to export your results to Word, Excel, Outlook or another PowerPoint presentation. Many types of reports are available. Tests response-gathering. Having problems with the remotes? This is probably where to fix it. This re-detects the sensor and allows you to test each remote to make sure they correspond with the appropriate numbers on-screen. Select the method in which you will be getting your responses. Simulated Data is best for trials in your office. This button gives you various Participant options. You can load, edit, or create you participant list here, among other things. Select your participant list here. This will help you know how each student is doing, participating, or listening. Need help? Look for the question make to get the answers!

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 3 Creating a Participant List A Participant List tracks responses of your audience. If your participant list is absent (you do not make one) then your audience will be anonymous and you will not be able to see/track their responses. 1. To create a participant list click the Participants button on the TurningPoint toolbar. 2. From the dropdown menu, select Edit a Participant List. 3. Based on the remotes you have, import the participant list given to you by the Instructional Designer, by locating it on your computer. 4. Click Open to open your list in an editable form. You will see a screen similar to Figure 2. Your screen will look like this by Step 4. Figure 2 5. The basic setup of this screen is as follows: Location your remote sensor location/id Device Number which number the remote represents in a presentation response table. This pre-made model has each remote correspond with a Device ID Last Name/First Name student information Device ID the unique ID for each remote in your classroom. This is pre-made for you by the instructional design team. Student ID optional student information 6. Enter the first and last names of your students provided in the sheet given to you. 7. Click Done when you have finished. You will return to TurningPoint. 8. From the dropdown menu next to your Participant button, select the title of your participant list. You now have a participant list ready to use in your TurningPoint presentation. This will show you which students are answering and what they have chosen. Advanced users may experiment with importing participant lists from Excel.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 4 The First slide (PPT Slide) 1. Create a new presentation by clicking File > New > Blank Presentation 2. Click the slide Design button (on the PowerPoint Formatting toolbar) to select a slide design that you would like to adopt for this presentation 3. A title slide will appear by default. Type in the title King s Kwiz and in the subtitle box, put your name as the creator The Second Slide (TurningPoint Slide) 1. Insert a new TurningPoint slide by clicking the Insert Slide button on the TurningPoint toolbar 2. Click Vertical Slide to have TurningPoint create your slide (see Fig. 3) Your slide will look like this by Step 2, slide design may vary. Figure 3 3. Type in the first question on your Q & A Sheet, by highlighting and replacing the words Enter Question Text 4. Enter the answer choices where it says Enter answer text Each time you hit the ENTER key, you will start a new answer. To get a line break without starting a new answer, hold SHIFT and hit ENTER 5. The chart (bar graph) will re-adjust depending on how many answer choices you allow. For our example you will see each bar assigned 25%, because we have four possible answers. 6. You may have to move or resize some text boxes depending on the slide design you selected. You may also need to adjust bullets or numbers to match your design. This can be achieved by right clicking and choosing Bullets and Numbering. 7. By default, TurningPoint has no reminder, but they do help encourage students to answer, which also makes the response time go by much faster. 8. Before exploring different Reminders let s start with a basic Countdown. Click Insert Object and Countdown and choose Timer.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 5 9. The countdown will start On Click. This means that when you are presenting you will have to click for this slide to show up, then click again to make the countdown start. If you would like to make this happen automatically follow these steps: a) Right-click on the countdown and select Custom Animation. A new pane will open, as shown in Figure 4. The Custom Animation pane is seen on the right hand side of the PowerPoint Window. Figure 4 b) The countdown is listed as Countdown # where # indicates the type of countdown you have selected. c) Click on the words On Click and choose With Previous or After Previous. d) To change the countdown time, click on the 10 and you will be prompted to enter a new number. e) When you re satisfied, click the x to close the Custom Animation pane. Congratulations! You ve made your first TurningPoint slide! This is an opinion question that is quite simple. We will assign points to correct answers in our next slide.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 6 The Third Slide (TurningPoint Slide) 1. Insert a new TurningPoint slide by clicking the Insert Slide button on the TurningPoint toolbar 2. Choose the Horizontal Slide to get a slide resembling Figure 5. Your slide will look like this by Step 2, slide design may vary. Figure 5 3. Repeat the steps you learned in the previous section to enter a question and some answers on the slide. This time, make sure your question has a correct answer. Assigning Points 4. On your TurningPoint toolbar, click the eyeglasses to open a new small window. These are your TurningPoint Settings. 5. We re already on the slide we want, marked by the top dropdown menu that shows our question. 6. In the Answers dropdown, choose seven and you ll see the bottom of your window change. 7. In the Value column, type in the word Correct. We could also assign points to the question. Since this is a quiz, erase Correct and type in 200. Now the question is worth 200 points. 8. Click Done when you are finished. Now you will know how many points each student The TurningPoint Settings window will get. For a consistent game, you should indicate Figure 6 the points that can be earned on the slide. We should also assign a color to make the right answer stand out. We will make all of the wrong answers one color, and the right one a different one. Click on one of the percentages on the left of an answer. You may see your chart reset with the color scheme you are using.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 7 Editing Colors of Charts 9. Double-click the percentage in your chart and you will see it turn to an editable area. 10. Click on a bar with a wrong answer. You may notice a small square show up in the middle of all of the bars. All bars are selected. 11. Click on the same bar again. You will notice small squares surrounding the bar now. From here you can edit the color by using the Fill Color button on PowerPoint s Drawing Toolbar (View > Toolbars > Drawing). Figure 7 shows where you will be by this step. Just before filling a bar with a new color Figure Repeat step 11 until each of your answers is marked with a right color and a wrong color. 13. To exit the chart s editable area, click anywhere on the slide outside of the chart. Now the chart is selected, but not editable. If you make an answer Correct it will automatically color the correct answer different from the incorrect, however you cannot assign points if you choose this method You have now edited your chart in an advanced mode. Way to go. We will now experiment with other Reminders. A reminder is REQUIRED on every TurningPoint slide, so don t forget to add one or your slide will not work properly. Adding Reminders 14. To add a Reminder, click on the Insert Object button and browse the options from the dropdown menu: Answer Now, Countdown, Response Counter, or Response Table. 15. Insert a the Flagpole Response Counter (Reminders > Response Counter > Meter)

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page You will see the flagpole show up. Move it accordingly on your slide by clicking on it and dragging it to the new location. 17. You can have more than one Reminder on a slide, but it can also get very confusing for students. Be sure to think about students when you re adding slides. If they are confused by the content you could end up taking more time to explain your presentation than actually presenting it! Congratulations. You have edited most aspects of a TurningPoint slide. You are now capable of making a TurningPoint presentation. If, at any point, you want to insert a regular PowerPoint slide, simply click the Insert Slide button on the PowerPoint formatting toolbar or by clicking Insert from the menu then clicking Slide.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 9 Presenting in TurningPoint When presenting a TurningPoint presentation in-class, you will have Response Devices selected on the TurningPoint toolbar (see right). For our purposes, and for in-office practice, you will select Simulated Data which gives TurningPoint the ability to generate 250 random responses for your presentation. 1. If you are showing your presentation for the first time, skip ahead to Step 2. When you open your presentation, you must reset it so that it is blank (or all the data is reset to zero). To do this click the Reset button and choose Session. This resets all of the data in your presentation. You can also reset individual slides one at a time, if you wish, by choosing Current Slide. 2. Start your presentation using your preferred method of beginning a presentation in PowerPoint (Slideshow > View Show OR F5 on your keyboard OR the button) 3. TurningPoint presentations use the same means to advance slides as PowerPoint. Since we start with our title slide, we will click once to advance to the next slide. From here, things will happen fast: If our countdown was set right, it will countdown from 20 Simulated responses will be coming in Our table will generate automatically In a class setting, things will be slower and you will not be as overwhelmed with the information coming at you all at once. TurningPoint is that simple to operate in a presentation. Of course, you have a few other options when you re presenting. Please see the Presentation Toolbar section to learn about these options.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 10 The Presentation Toolbar F9 F2 F3 F6 F4 F7 F8 F10 F12 Insert On-The-Fly Question 1. While your presentation is running, move your cursor to the bottom of the screen. You will see the TurningPoint presentation toolbar come up. It is very handy for a number of obvious and some not-so-obvious reasons. Most buttons corresponds with a function key on your keyboard (F*) and will be explained below, moving from left to right: Hide the Toolbar (F9) Think that toolbar is obtrusive or ugly? Hide it with this button. Percents/Decimals (F2) Easily convert your percent-driven chart results to numbers. This is excellent for big groups. Data Slicing (F3) Compare demographic answers to questions. Display Original Chart (F6) After slicing data, return to the original chart with this button. Re-Poll Current Question (F4) This allows you to reset and re-poll the current question without exiting TurningPoint and resetting it manually. Response Grid (F7) This will display a grid of who is answering the questions. Non-Response Grid (F8) This will show you who is not answering the questions. Go to Next Slide (F10) Move on to the next slide. It is a simple function that you can do with a click anywhere, but if you want to skip the current question, this will advance without taking more time. Participant Monitor (F12) This will display your participant list and what each participant answered for each question. Insert On-The-Fly Question Have an impromptu question that comes up? This button draws up a new slide of your choice. Students can choose an answer based on what you say it is, Choose 1 if you think Blue is the right answer. Pick 2 for yellow, 3 for red, and 4 for orange. Interactive Information Like a response counter in ways, this will show you how many answers out of the total that have come in.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 11 Configuring TurningPoint Hardware 1. To configure the remote sensor, click on the lightening bolt button (called the Test Response Gathering button). 2. TurningPoint launches a Wizard to guide you through the hardware setup process. Make sure the Response Card box is checked. You may also use vpad if you are in a computer lab. If so, check that box. Your screen will look like this by Step 3. Figure 8 3. Click the Next button to advance to the next step of the Wizard. 4. There may be a delay while TurningPoint searches your COM ports. Eventually your wizard will advance and look like the Figure 9. The Response Device has been located and is connected correctly. Your screen will look like this by Step 4. Figure 9 5. The next stage of the Wizard is fairly simple. For the amount of students you have, write that amount of remotes in use. We ll pretend I have a class of 32. My screen would look like Figure 10, shown below. Note the arrow pointing to Ending keypad number or how many remotes I will have in use. I typed in 32 for my 32 users. Figure 10

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page Click Next to advance to the last step of the Wizard. Have students hit a key on their keypad to test their remotes. 7. When you are satisfied with your keypad test, click Done. Testing keypads can be very time consuming in a class setting, so it is optional. If you are having problems, however, you may want to run through this step to make sure everything is okay.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 13 Post-Presentation Actions When you finish your presentation you may want to save your data in a Turning Report in Word or Excel. 1. To create a report of your presentation results, click on the Tools button and select Turning Reports 2. After a moment the Turning Report Wizard window will open up. 3. Follow along with the pictures in Figure 9. Step One asks you what you would like to do. We will generate a report. Click Next to proceed. 4. Step two asks you what data you would like to use. Make sure the Use Current Session checkbox is checked. Click Next to proceed. 5. Here is a list of all the typed of reports you can generate. We encourage you to experiment with these report options. Each option will be covered in the Types of Report Options section, but for now, click on Results by Question. Click Next to proceed. 6. Click the button on the The TurningPoint Reports window Figure 9 bottom labeled Generate Report to tell TurningPoint to make your report. 7. You will see Excel open and develop printable pages of your results. You can save or print these pages to keep your results for future reference.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 14 Types of Report Options The following Report Summaries are provided by the TurningPoint Help file TurningTechnologies. Results By Question: This report opens an Excel document which includes the number of responses and overall percentage of responses received for each answer to each question. The questions are listed in the order they were displayed to the audience. Graphical Results By Question: This report opens an Excel document which includes the same information as the "Results by Question" with a graph of the results included. Ranking Summary: This report opens an Excel document which includes results from all of the ranking slides polled as well as a bubble chart with the results of the polling session.. Outline: This report opens a Word document which displays the question and answer information for all questions in your presentation. They are listed in the order they were displayed to the audience. Demographic Comparison: This Excel report displays the Results by Question information and adds a breakdown according to how the participants responded to any demographic questions. Graphical Comparison: This report opens an Excel document which includes the same information as the "Demographic Comparison" with a graph of the results included. Response Data Export: This Excel Report is an export of the actual keypad response values by individual keypad. Participant List: This report available in both Word and Excel formats simply displays the information from your Participant List. A Participant List must be included in your session for this report to be available. Participant Results: This report exports participant information into an Excel Spreadsheet. It displays one row per participant which includes all of the participant s Participant List and actual keypad response information. A Participant List must be included in your session for this report to be available. Graded Participant Results: This Excel report is very similar to the Participant Results report but adds a column that displays each participant s accumulated percentage score. This report is particularly beneficial when correct/incorrect answer values are used. A Participant List must be included in your session for this report to be available. Results By Participant: This Excel report creates a graded test type report for each participant. It displays each question, the participants response, the value of the participant s response, the correct answer, and each participant s overall percentage score. A Participant List must be included in your session for this report to be available.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 15 TurningPoint Glossary 3-D Pie Slide Results are displayed in a connected, full pie chart. COM Port A COM Port on the computer is where different external hardware communicates with the computer. In other words, it s where your Receiver is plugged in. If you have a COM port problem, make sure it is properly plugged in. Distributed Pie Slide Results are displayed in a disconnected pie chart that has results separated by slice. Generic Slide Choose from a number of possible responses. This assigns a period (.) to each answer, so that you can fill in information later. Horizontal Slide Results are displayed horizontally, coloring behind the answers. Keypad Mode Run your presentation with Keypads. This is the way your presentation will be run in-class. Likert Slide Offers the option for students to evaluate on a determined scale (Rate on a scale of 1-4, for example). Offset Slide Results are displayed through a 3-D horizontal bar that underlines each answer it corresponds with. Participant Leader Board Slide A scoreboard of sorts, it shows which five students have the leading scores. Participant List The participant list is made before a presentation to help the instructor track student progress or responses. The instructor can enter in any number of things about the students, but First and Last Name generally suffice. When you complete your presentation, exported reports will display these student facts. Instead of Participant 1, it will show John Smith s scores.

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 16 Receiver (AKA. Response Device) This little device plugs into your computer s USB Port. It is what collects the responses from your students. Reminders Reminders are small indicators that are used to let your students know the progress of the class. Response Counters allow the class to see what percent of the students have answered; Countdowns give a specific amount of time for a slide before the results are calculated; Answer Nows offer a time-free and casual reminder; and Response Tables show numbered grids so that student 10 knows that their answer was recorded when their block gets colored in. Simulated Mode If you would like to test your presentation and see if it will work correctly, then you can simulate responses. TurningPoint generates 250 random responses that help you determine how your charts will look during the presentation. It is perfect for practice. Team Assignment Slide This type of slide allows teams to be established dynamically by having all students who wish to be on Team 3 hit the 3 key on their keypad. Team Leader Board Slide Shows which teams have the highest scores in team assignments. True/False(/Abstain) Slide Simple slides that display a limited amount of answer possibilities based on your selection. Answers are also pre-written a True/False slide will already have: 1. True 2. False Vertical Slide Results are displayed in a vertical bar graph with colored cylinders. Yes/No Slide Simple slides that display a limited amount of answer possibilities based on your selection. Answers are also pre-written as: 1. Yes 2. No

IITS Workshop Handout: TurningPoint Page 17 TurningPoint Cheat Sheet Does your slide have a reminder? list the points available, if any? have any extra breaks that will result in empty answers? have an appropriate contrast between text and chart color (horizontal charts)? How do I Jump between numbers and percentages? Hit the F2 key on your keyboard Test keypads? The lightening bolt button on the TurningPoint toolbar will take you through the setup process. The last step is testing remotes. Try my presentation without Keypads? Choose Simulated from the dropdown menu next to the Charts button. Get help with my problem?! First, try the blue question mark button on the TurningPoint toolbar. If you hit F1 on your keyboard or access help via the main menu, you ll get PowerPoint help. If/Then Problems IF On-slide responses don t correspond with students keypad numbers My questions don t line up with results My slide won t work Students responses aren t showing up on the slides THEN Make sure you have a Participant List loaded. Next would be to test your keypads. Lastly, we may need to reconfigure the keypads. You may have accidentally moved them. Select the border of the text box containing your answers and simply move it to where it looks right. Make sure you have a Reminder. If everything looks right and you just can t figure out what is wrong, try to recreate the slide. Please be patient and understand that the receiver may be over-worked with 25 responses coming in at once. This is rare, but may happen. Ask students to pace their answers. If you would like to learn more about advanced features in TurningPoint, please see the trainer after the session.
