1 Medicine Core Curriculum Syllabus,

2 Yale Medicine Core Curriculum Overview The Core Curriculum is a series of required courses which are specified by job group (e.g. managers of staff and individual contributors). The Learning & Development group identified these courses based on feedback from Yale Medicine leaders and staff, the results of the 2017 Workplace Survey. The Core Curriculum also addresses the business objectives of the organization identified for the year. Our Expectations Participants will Arrive on time and be prepared to learn. Bring a pen. Make arrangements for coverage while you are in class (who can answer on your behalf while you are in a session?). Set up out of office replies, when appropriate. Schedule and allocate time to complete work to accommodate training time Ask questions. If something is unclear or inaccurate, ask the instructor about it in a respectful way. Withdraw or make cancellations 48 hrs. in advance so someone can take your seat. This will also allow catering orders, materials printing, and set up to be updated Silence and put away all large electronic devices. We understand the need to be close to mobile devices in the event of an emergency, otherwise we would appreciate your full attention and concentration to this important learning material. Reschedule for another session if you arrive over 15 minutes late. Instructors will.. Arrive at least 30 minutes before each session to set up and organize the room. Have all materials ready for each participant including the attendance sheet, presentation, etc. Make arrangements for coverage while you are in class (who can answer on your behalf while you are in a session?). If participant says something which is unclear or inaccurate, ask them about it in a respectful way. Class cancelations must first be approved by the Director of Learning & Development at least 72 hrs. before the scheduled date of the session. The instructor is responsible for notifying the participants about the cancelation and provide a reasonable rationale in the communication. The instructor must make every effort to ensure participants are able to reschedule to another feasible session. If the instructor is unable to teach a class, they will find an appropriate substitute at least 48 hrs. in advance. Silence and put away all mobile devices during the session. While the session is being conducted, full attention must be given to the participants during each part of the event. Close the door when the session starts. Inform latecomers after 15 min they must reschedule to another session. Materials Needed A writing instrument. Pre-reading or materials, when specified. This is an exciting, interactive session with various activities and speakers and where existing Yale Medicine staff get to meet their new colleagues to learn together about our organization. 2. Yale Medicine-A Year in Review, 45 mins. Regulatory content such as HIPAA and medical billing compliance will also be reviewed along with key cultural organizational messages of that year (e.g. accountability, how we work together, etc.). 3. InsideOut Coaching, 8 hours InsideOut Coaching is a one-day program that offers a different way of looking at coaching and applies the GROW model. It provides a practical and proven process for coaching others to improve and sustain enhanced performance. In this workshop you will learn concepts and practices that will help you and others uncover your innate ability to respond to the performance pressures of today. 4. InsideOut Coaching- Group Coaching, 5 hours Apply the skills learned in InsideOut Coaching with your peers and a Learning & Development facilitator. This is a peer-to-peer learning session for Yale Medicine managers to have guided group conversations on how to apply the GROW coaching model to address and resolve day-to-day performance challenges. Managers will also learn from each other leadership tips and best practices. 5. Communicating for Leadership Success, 3 hours (this is a prerequisite to Driving Change) This foundation course helps leaders communicate effectively so they can spark action in others. The course teaches leaders the interaction essentials they need to handle the variety of challenges and opportunities they encounter every day in the workplace and beyond. Achieve results through others by building strong interpersonal relationships. Plan for successful interactions with team members in person and virtually. Provide meaningful, supportive feedback that motivates team members and helps individuals improve their performance. Impact business outcomes by consistently meeting the personal and practical needs of others. 6. Driving Change, 3 hours (Communicating with Leadership success is a prerequisite to this course) This course provides the skills and resources leaders need to accelerate the process of implementing change with their team members and to create an agile work environment where people are more open to change. Accelerate the process of making change happen. Minimize the potential negative effects change can have on productivity, morale, and collaboration. Turn resistance into commitment and inspire team members to take ownership of change. Clearly communicate the business rationale and benefits of change for the team and the organization. 7. Managing at Yale Medicine, duration TBD For new and existing managers, this course is intended as a supplement to training received from Yale University. It reviews the Yale Medicine organization and business, helps with setting expectations and building teams, performance management, reviews union regulations and more. This course goes in depth into creating a strategy for completing the first 90 days to prepare managers for success in their roles. 8. How We Work Together- Learning Map, 3 hours Learners will participate in a highly interactive facilitated activity with peers from various departments across the organization to learn about how Yale Medicine functions, how we must work together, and its external/internal forces. Using a visual Learning Map, participants will take the journey of a patient to learn such concepts as how revenue is generated, information is passed from person to person, and where the organization invests. In addition, participants will learn about the relationship and importance of teamwork, employee engagement, and patient experience to ensure Yale Medicine maintains its place in the competitive market. 9. Getting Things Done, 3.5 hours GTD teaches a behavior-based skillset that individuals can immediately apply to create focus, organize information, and master workflow. It teaches participants to focus their attention on things that matter most, prioritize commitments, increase personal productivity, and create more mental space for innovation at work and at home. 4/17/18 4 9/6/ /24/18 4 5/30/18 4 TBD 5 9/25/18 7

Use a set of interaction process skills that enable them to conduct more successful discussions that achieve results. Use a technique for providing specific, meaningful feedback that helps people improve their performance and increase productivity. 4. Embracing Change, 3 hours (Communicating with Impact is a prerequisite to this course) This course focuses on the role of individual performers in implementing change in the workplace. Participants discover their Change IQ, learn about the phases of change that many people experience and are introduced to best practices that will enable them to tackle and overcome the new business challenges of today and tomorrow. Commit to and take ownership of change. Effectively recognize change, explore change, and overcome personal resistance to change. Minimize the negative impact on individuals, work groups, and the organization of not adapting to change. Demonstrate an embracing change mind-set that influences others to embrace workplace change. 5.
