1 Newsletter 18th November Issue 10 Website: Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to our third letter of this half term. To start off on a matter relating to the day-to-day running of the school, I would like to reinforce the message that now the poor weather is closing in we still have a large amount of students coming to school in the mornings without a coat or an umbrella. It is not much fun to sit around in school all day in dripping wet clothes and I repeat my message that all students should come to school with a coat, not only to ensure that uniforms are kept dry but also to make sure that students do not come down with coughs and colds as a result of being soaking wet and cold all day. We have, again, been very fortunate this week to welcome Humanutopia back into school to work with our students in Years 7and 9 and with our Year 10 Heroes. Next week is significant as it will be the start of our Heroes mentoring programme where our older students will support those in Year 7 in tutor time. This promises to be a really successful initiative and our students are always full of praise for the amazing work that Humanutopia do with them. We have worked hard this week, as a result of feedback from our Student Councils, to improve the environment and, in particular, the students toilets. These are all now looking super smart with plants, air freshener, posh hand wash and tissues. The feedback from our students has been very positive; we are always listening to our students to make things better for them and their school. Our Year 11 Trial Results Day will take place on Monday 21st November. This will be an opportunity for our Year 11 students to experience collecting and opening their results from the recent trial exams and will replicate, as much as possible, the experience that they will have in the summer. Ms Attwood has also worked very hard to assign a mentor from our staff team to each of our Year 11 students. The students will find out who their mentor is on Monday and this will provide us with more opportunities to support their academic development throughout the 20 remaining weeks that we have with our Year 11 students. I would like to remind you that our Year 11 parents evening will be held on Thursday 1st December between 4.30pm and 8pm and appointment letters have been sent out to our Year 11 students this week. This is a really important opportunity to meet subject staff and discuss results from the recent trial exams and to focus on the next steps for our hard working students. We are also looking forward to welcoming the Community Health Bus on to our site next Friday. Timeslots have been allocated for all Year 11 and Year 7 to visit the bus and get professional advice from the NHS community nurses on nutrition and general health. This promises to be an exciting event and the first of its kind on the Island. Georgina Rogers, our Exams Officer, is frantically writing our Christmas pantomime Goldilocks which we will showcase to our students on Friday 16th December. Promises to be a real cracker! 2 Headteacher Awards Staff Marie Greaves and Jasmine Price for amazing work for the Remembrance Evening. Isle of Wight College Open Day Saturday 19 November 10.00am 2.00pm Going for Gold Year 11 Assembly On Friday 4th November Year 11 students from Carisbrooke College and Medina College all took part in a fantastic assembly with an Olympic Gold Medallist! Louis Attrill has a passion for inspiring students and presented the important message about working and studying hard and never giving up on what they want to achieve in life. Louis, who gained a Gold Medal for Great Britain in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, spoke to the students about his journey from starting in the sport to his gold medal win. He highlighted the hard work and determination needed to achieve this and of the commitment and dedication it took to succeed. This was an assembly with maximum impact and a great focus for our Year 11 students who are in their final year at Carisbrooke and Medina Colleges and are striving for the best possible grades in their GCSEs. At the end of the assembly Louis shook the hand of each student and wished them good luck in the future. As a memento of the occasion and continual reminder of the need to work hard, he also gave each student a gold badge which they now wear on their school blazer. This was such an important message for our students and it s great to see the gold badges. A real reminder that hard work and commitment to study can equal success!

3 Meet our Governors Over the forthcoming weeks we will be introducing each of our Governors to you by sharing their profiles. This week we focus on Peter Whitlock. I am a Computer Systems Consultant with over 38 years experience in the IT industry. I work for Yokogawa, a Japanese Control systems vendor, at their software development centre in Cowes where I am currently managing the Software Quality Improvement program. Prior to this role in the company, I spent 20 years travelling the world working with customers in the Oil and Chemicals businesses designing and implementing Production Management Systems. Before coming to the Island some 21 years ago I worked for the IT department of a European manufacturing company in Worcester. I have been a Governor for over 14 years now, initially with Carisbrooke High and latterly with Island Innovation Trust since its inception. I m married with three adult children, all graduates of the Island education system. When time allows I get out walking or sea kayaking round the Island and other parts of the UK. Get on board and meet your School Nurse Team! The School Nurse Team will be visiting Carisbrooke College with the Community Bus on November 25th between 09:30 16:00 We will be bringing along some resources to highlight the support the School Nurse Team can offer and we look forward to meeting the students throughout the day. The event will be to raise awareness of the School Nursing service so students are aware who they can speak to should they have any worries about their health. They can provide advice in relation to emotional wellbeing, body changes, sexual health, relationships, managing different illnesses and empowering students to care for their own health and wellbeing. There will also be information relating to healthy eating and hidden sugars. There will be a post box available for students to post any questions they would prefer answered in private or to arrange to see a nurse when they are next in the school. Those who post in the box will automatically be entered in to a draw for a 20 Amazon voucher. There will be 3 computers on board where students can find out about useful websites where they can access self help information.

6 Five Non-Negotiables to get us to Good A colleague s role within our non-negotiables Will start and end lessons and tutor time on time and not accept poor punctuality from students. Will follow our agreed staff dress code and insist that students follow our agreed uniform code. Will not use a mobile phone, headphones or other electronic devices in a lesson or tutor time and not allow students to do so. A student s role within our non-negotiables Will be punctual and will not attempt to leave lessons or tutor time early. Students who are not punctual will be detained after school. Will follow our agreed student dress code in lessons and in tutor time. In some circumstances, a limited time period to get this right may be given. Students persistently out of uniform will be isolated from lessons. Will not use a mobile phone, headphones or other electronic devices in school. These items will be confiscated. Have a right to be able to teach the lesson or tutor time they have planned and insist that students let them do so. Will not be abusive to staff and students. When necessary, fixed term exclusions and parental meetings will support this. Will not persistently disrupt a well-planned lesson or tutor time. Students who spoil the learning of others will be removed from lessons.
