1 CC 6 ~ Common Core 6 th Grade Math Syllabus Mrs. Bahall ~ bahallt@issaquah.wednet.edu~room C-8 Greeting Students & Families, It is with much joy and enthusiasm that I welcome you to an adventurous and exciting school year at Beaver Lake Middle School (BLMS). I am looking forward to encouraging every child s unique and creative abilities to further their knowledge in mathematics. This letter contains information, policies, and expectation that will you achieve success in school. Please read this information in the letter together and complete the attached Student/Parent/Guardian Contract. This is the first homework assignment! This assignment is due September 4, Connect Site You can access my connect site through BLMS website ( or the Issaquah School District website. The connect site contains information about assignments, homework and frequently requested information. Supplies In addition to the school list of supplies these are items needed for Math class. ~#2 pencils (at least 3 sharpened pencils each day) ~ Erasers & pencil sharper ~red color pencil for correcting ~Graph composition book (available from the bookkeeper) ~Notebook paper & Graph paper ~Scientific calculator (simple, inexpensive with exponent key) ~Ruler & Protractor ~ a roll of scotch tape for taping handouts into notebook

2 Program We will be using Connected Mathematics Project 3 (CMP3). This comprehensive program demands a high degree of participation, focus, and dedication. Below is an outline of the topics we will be studying this year. UNIT TITLE Prime Time Comparing Bits and Pieces Let s Be Rational Decimal Ops Covering & Surrounding Variables & Patterns Data About Us TOPIC Factors and Multiples Ratios, Rational Numbers, and Equivalence Fraction Operations Computing with Decimals and Percent 2D Measurement Focus on Algebra Statistics and Data Analysis Homework Students can expect daily assignments design to practice and master critical math skills. Assignments should take about minutes to complete. If it is consistently taking more than 60 minutes to complete homework assignments at home please let me know. Parents/Guardians look at what your student is doing in class and have them explain to you so you re familiar with what skills are being learned. Special Circumstances Homework is intended to be practice for mastery. Assignments should not take more than minutes. If a student struggles with a particular assignment OR a family issue/conflict arises THEN the student and parent may come up with a plan as to when and how this assignment will be completed. Write this plan in the notebook under the assignment heading and get a parent signature. The student will receive 10 points for that assignment and I will assume that your family will follow through on the plan unless otherwise notified via or paper note. Due Dates As a general rule assignments are due the next day. All assignments must be completed before coming to class. Late Work If you have an excused absence you will be given the same number of days missed to make up work for credit. If the absence is unexcused the missed work may not be made up. Extra Credit Extra credit is offered infrequently throughout the year.

3 Assignments Assignments are recorded in the master calendar, weekly board, student planner, and on my connect site. Students will be given time in class to record assignments in their planner each day. Absences/Make Up Work It is the student s responsibility to make up both missed class work and homework. Students have one day per day of the absence to make up work. This can be overwhelming for an extended absence, so please talk with me to make a plan if this is the case. Tests and quizzes must be made up within ONE week of the absence. You must choose a date and time for the makeup. It is best to do so via so we both have a copy of the arrangement. Note: all absent work will receive a 0 for the day absent and will show absent in the gradebook comments. The grade will be changed AFTER the makeup work is properly completed and handed in (using a pink sheet from the assignments file) Tests Comprehensive tests will be given at the end of each unit. A great way to review for a unit test is to look over your math spiral at classwork, notes and homework. You can also do practice problems and review your past CheckUps/Quizzes. Tardies Students are expected to be in their seats at the time class begins. Tardiness will be handled with in class discipline and loss of participation points. Grading Scale A % B % C % D % A % B % C % F % B % C % D % 30% Assignments (daily assignments, starters, homework, test reviews, etc) 30% Tests 15% Quizzes 15% Participation(being prepared, behavior & participation) 10% Skills/Computation

4 Math Help Encourage your child to seek help during the below time if additional helps is needed beyond class time. Please make sure they check with me about my availability due to possible conflicts with other morning meetings that may occur throughout the school year. Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays morning 7:20a-7:35a Wednesday morning 9:45a-10:00a Behavioral Expectations School policies and consequences for behavior are outlined in the Student Handbook and apply at all times. Students should not interrupt the learning environment with behavior issues. Communication Middle school students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning. Homework keys, Daily Notes and Support Materials will be posted on the website. If you don t understand something, miss something or just need help solving something, PLEASE let me know as soon as possible. As soon as these resources are confirmed for this school year, I will share them on my connect site or you check at the King County Sammamish Library for information.
