1 Mr. Briseno Rm-806 Algebra 2/Trig Course Outline This outline is for your information, in it you will find policies, course requirements, content, and some expectations that will give you the opportunity to achieve and have a positive learning experience in my math class. Please read over it and share it with your parents/guardians. We will go over this in class, if you happen to still have questions, or your parents have questions you cannot answer/recall you can reach me at abriseno@hartdistrict.org or come by my room. My website CURRENTLY can be found at Course Intro This course covers more advanced topics of algebra than was seen in algebra 1. These topics include, but are not limited to: expressions, equations in multiple variables, matrices; also solving, graphing and writing equations and functions that include exponents, square roots, and absolute values. Conic sections, as well as trig functions. Classroom Materials We are going to cover sections from the Algebra 2/Trig book supplied by the school. To succeed in class, you are encouraged to bring the following items with you each and every day: Pencil(s) o Your homework should be done in pencil, so you can make corrections, messy/crossed out work will be penalized during the neatness section of the notebook checks. A highlighter An eraser Post it notes A 3 ring binder for math only Hole savers (Those little donut shaped objects in case you rip a hole-punched page out) o Or page sleeves (Clear page holders) The book supplied by the school will be a required each day, unless there is enough for a class set of books. Class Notebooks (Dedicated 3 ring binder) This class will make use of a semester long 3 ring binder, which will be used for notes, classwork, and homework. Notebooks will be collected at the completion of each test, and briefly checked for organization, and completeness. It will contain a table of contents o Assignment sheets o Class notes o Homework and classwork o Returned tests/quizzes Extra credit opportunity: Notes that have been color coded in a logical manner may receive +1pt of extra credit per section of notes completed in this manner (On syllabus review day, there will be an example using the syllabus) Notebook checks will make up 10% of your total grade

2 Class Notebooks (continued) Each notebook check will be out of 110 pts o 100 points for completeness (Notes, classwork, and returned homework) Be very careful here it looks like homework is a small part of your grade, however there is a case of double jeopardy here, your homework counts in two locations; both for your completeness of your notebook, and completing it! o 10 points for neatness o +1 pt per section for color coded notes Homework Classwork Homework will be assigned and collected daily, or at my discretion Homework will be worth 10% of the total grade Homework will be given points on basis of completion, and reasonable attempt on problems assigned o Only a complete homework assignment will be given points o If you are at a loss in how to do problems you are encouraged to /message me to get help. Each homework will receive: o 2 points for being complete and on time o 1 point for late credit o There will be no credit for work not turned in before late deadlines o Homework is required for test grades to be counted Questions about the homework assignment will be taken the day it is due, and as long as time permits Classwork will be assigned at my discretion; classwork is a part of your notebook grade; classwork is to be done in class. Classwork is kept in your notebooks, and will be checked with your notebook for completeness There is no late classwork. Either it makes it in for the notebook check or it doesn t o If you are absent it is up to you to obtain the notes o If you have an excused absence, you will have time to get everything together before you turn in your work Late work policy Inevitably there will come a time when you will wish to turn in late work. There are weekly deadlines. Late homework will only be accepted until the next Friday o For example a homework assignment assigned 9/23 (Monday) will be due 9/24, and can be turned in late until the next immediate Friday. This means Thursday s don t have late work o Homework that would have been due on a Friday may be turned in for late credit the NEXT immediate Friday o If you are absent you will be given as many days as you were absent to make up the work so it is on time, after which the Friday deadline will be imposed

3 Tests+Quizzes There will be chapter tests, generally one test per chapter, some chapters will need 2 tests o Tests are worth 5 times that of quizzes o All unit tests and graded quizzes will account for 60% of your total grade Quizzes will be interspersed and will be sometimes used diagnostically to assess your needs, these quizzes will be worth points but not necessarily based on correctness, other quizzes will be graded for correctness There will be one final exam that is weighted 15% of the total grade. It is cumulative. It is required! Classroom participation I will randomly call on students in the class for their input throughout my presentations, and during guided practice, as well as independent practice. This is a graded portion of class and worth 5% of your grade; no weeks are worth more than any other week (even short weeks). Sometimes I will call volunteers. Grading The lectures will have places for your participation The classwork will have pauses and places for presentation, or input The warm-ups will have places for input The grade will be put into infinite campus weekly on Friday afternoon. Each week is worth 50 points. o Each week your points will be distributed to you based on: Your correctness in answering of questions Wrong answers are not worth as much as correct answers Passing on a question will not harm you, but you won t receive any points Your weekly level of participation versus your classmate s level of participation. This means if the majority of the people in class answer 3-5 questions, then in order to obtain the full 50 points you would need to answer 3-5 questions as well Grading scale: A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F=0-59% o Depending on participation and completion of homework there is a possibility that a *9.5 could be rounded up Notebook Checks will be 10% of your total grade Homework/classwork is worth 10% of your total grade Tests and graded quizzes will account for 60% of your total grade The Final Exam will account for 15% of your total grade The last 5% comes from classroom participation Tests may be curved. In order to achieve/earn the curve for the test your NOTEBOOK, must achieve an 85% or better Classroom Expectations Welcome to Algebra 2/Trig, by now you have reached a level of maturity in your academic lives where you will accept full responsibility for your actions. Gum, food, and drink other than bottled water are to be kept outside o First infraction is a warning o After a warning I will use the Opportunity Room step sheets, and consequences, beginning on step 2 (after the verbal warning step)

4 Classroom Expectations (continued) Be respectful o If you show disrespect to fellow classmates, myself, or other guests, you will be asked to stay after, class and will earn an opportunity room step o If you continue to be disrespectful and cause a distraction you will be escorted to the office Keep yourself on-task o If you are off-task I will warn you o If you require more than one warning you will be asked to step outside and you will earn a step o If, once you rejoin us, you continue to be a distraction, you will be escorted to the office Cell phones and other electronic devices o This includes but is not limited to digital cameras, cellphones, ipods/itouchs, mp3 players, etc. o These are to be turned off and put away prior to entering the classroom o Ear buds are to be out of the ears. *Dangling in front of you is acceptable* If you have your earbuds in, your music playing device, and earbuds will be confiscated for the period o If you have your cell phone out in the classroom, you will lose it for the period It will obtain a sticky note with your name, and it will be put in my drawer You may pick it up as you leave o If it happens a second time, you will lose your phone, and I will take it to the office, where you will have to pick it up at a later time Read and follow all directions, do not distract others from their learning o There will come a time when you are presented with tasks and they will come with directions. You should always completely read the directions that accompany assignments; they may have tips and hints hiding in them Infractions of the above generally will be given a single warning per CLASS, after which I will use the Opportunity Room step program internally, to document infractions. Step one is verbal warning + staying after to chat. Step 2 is a chat with me after class then a lunch detention where you will make up work for math class, if you are all caught up bring another class work. Step 3 is contact home; I will involve your parents in your misdeeds. Step 4, I will involve your counselor or administrator. Step 5 will be with an assistant principal. Anything above that I will strive for removing you from the classroom for an extended period of time. Academic Integrity Any student FOUND to be involved in dishonesty on any work will be subject to one or more of the following consequences: an automatic zero on the work plagiarized, suspension from class, referral to an administrator or a conference between administrator, parents, and/or myself. If you are at a point where cheating is the only answer you need to rethink the level of math class that you are taking.

5 Attendance/Tardy Policy You are late if you are not in your seat at the final bell when I check off names on the roll. If you are coming to class and the final bell rings while you are outside, then, you need to have a tardy pass. When you are absent you will be allowed to make up missed work, you will have as many days as you have excused absences to make up work you missed. Anyone who is absent for a test or quiz will be allowed to make it up at my earliest convenience however, know: the form, format, and problems may differ from the other students. Unexcused and truant absences for test days will result in zeros for that test or quiz. Things you must do on your own You must remember: Deadlines To complete your own missing assignments Make up tests Come prepared to class ready to work Teacher Communication My conference period is: I will be available most days during lunch for extra help, and some days before school as well.
