1 Rawafed Private School Head of Mathematics for G4-12 Job Description The Head of Mathematics is expected to be an outstanding, successful teacher, with strong evidence of outstanding outcomes. They will demonstrate a high level of commitment to the school and offer positive support for its aims, mission statement, values and future development Throughout their work, the Head of Mathematics will ensure that practices improve the quality of education provided, meet the needs and aspirations of all students and help continue to raise standards of achievement in the school. The Head of Mathematics must provide leadership and direction, working with the subject teachers for all aspects of mathematics and ensure provision for students is managed and organized to meet school and subject aims and objectives. They play a key role in inspiring, motivating and coaching of teachers in mathematics to meet the educational needs of all groups of students. Assisting in the evaluation of effectiveness of teaching and learning, provision planning and progress towards targets for students is also a key part of the role. The policy and practice of monitoring within a department provides the information for evaluation and action. The Head of Mathematics will support the identification of inclusion needs across the department and ensure systematic delivery of a differentiated curriculum. At the heart of this role is the provision of professional leadership to secure the highest quality of teaching and learning to continually raise the standards. A crucial part of this is contributing to whole school improvement. This includes working beyond the department, developing numeracy across the school, working with colleagues in English and science and other subjects, and making significant contributions to the SEF groups. JOB PURPOSE To lead, manage, develop, and be accountable for the Mathematics team taking key responsibility for: Teaching and learning Innovative and creative teaching and learning strategies Leading colleagues to differentiate across the curriculum Leading effective use of data across mathematics Leading day to day effective practices and systems to ensure consistency across the Math Department Make major contributions to the math curriculum REPORTING The post holder will report to the Academic Vice Principal RESPONSIBLE FOR The post holder will be responsible for teachers of mathematics
2 DIMENSIONS The post holder will be responsible for the following: The strategic direction and development of provision planning and support across the school for mathematics Teaching and learning Leading and managing staff Student progress and standards of achievement This includes the efficient deployment of staff and resources and contributing to whole school improvement ACCOUNTABILITIES The strategic direction and development of mathematics To ensure that the department culture, policies and practices follow and contribute to those of the school To contribute to whole school culture and climate which enable staff and students to enable staff and students to develop and maintain positive attitudes towards mathematics To assist with the creation of an annual subject development plan, which contributes to the achievement of the School Improvement Plan, and which involves all subject staff in its design and evaluation This will reflect the school s commitment to continuous improvement, high achievement, effective teaching and learning, and inclusion To set the highest expectations and goals for colleagues and students in relation to standards of achievement and behaviour To contribute to whole school planning, review, monitoring and evaluation To monitor, evaluate and review standards of teaching and learning, and student achievement of all groups of students in Elementary, Middle and High School against school, local, national and US standards, including regular lesson observation, sampling work, checking diaries, analyzing, collating and interpreting data and reporting annually or termly as appropriate on the above To represent the department in the wider school community, liaise with the rest of the school, and ensure they have relevant information on students in the cohort To keep up to date with national developments in curriculum, progress tracking, teaching practice and methodology To ensure transition from G1-3 through G4-12 by working with the G1-3 coordinator to review development of the math curriculum To hold regular staff meetings attended by all members of the department ensuring the provision of agendas and minutes
3 Teaching and learning To lead the team in the creation, consistent implementation, and improvement of courses/schemes of work which meet school, national and Virginia State requirements, and are accessible to provide suitable challenges for all students To lead in the development and implementation of effective teaching and learning strategies, including ICT-based developments To lead in the development and implementation of effective departmental assessment policies, within the framework of those for the whole school To closely track and monitor the progress of all groups of students analyzing any summative outcomes and providing a summary report each term To ensure that all staff have sufficient knowledge, skills, support and advice to teach students in mathematics To monitor teaching and learning activities in mathematics to ensure students meet or exceed their expectations and make outstanding progress To identify and teach study skills that will develop students ability to work independently To ensure that the most effective teaching approaches are adopted by subject teachers in the classroom To identify and adopt the most effective teaching approaches for students with additional learning needs Leading and managing staff To support/challenge and professionally develop staff so that they are effective in their role(s) and provide high quality teaching and learning; this is to include participating in and leading the school s programmes of staff training and development To inspire and enable all colleagues in the mathematics team to deliver top quality teaching on a daily basis Ensure that all members of staff recognize and fulfill their responsibilities to all groups of students including those with additional needs Provide training for teachers of mathematics Disseminate the best practice in the mathematics department Lead the staff in developing accessible learning experiences in mathematics for students with additional or different needs Lead the planning and delivery of intervention classes beyond the timetable for those students who are in danger of underachieving To contribute to whole school improvement by setting the highest expectations of students and staff, ensuring team members actively contribute to the School Improvement groups and play a role in continuous professional development To communicate effectively with staff and external agencies To be a positive role model in effectively implementing school policies To develop strong and positive professional relationships To line manage members of the Math department To induct newly qualified teachers as required To induct newly appointed teachers to the school as required
4 Student progress and standards of achievement Within the framework of whole school policies, to set and monitor appropriately challenging targets for students, which will make a measurable contribution to the fulfillment of those for the whole school and to manage interventions to maximize student progress To take the lead in the department on raising the achievement of all groups of students by sharing best practice, differentiating resources and having an overview of progress through outstanding tracking and monitoring To promote, manage and be responsible for high standards of student behaviour To implement creatively the school s systems for rewarding good student performance and ensure all staff use them effectively To ensure effective communication with parents so they are kept up to date with curriculum developments and their child s progress The efficient and effective deployment of resources To provide a stimulating environment, including maintaining displays that promote interest and learning To regularly review the current resources used in mathematics and numeracy, supplemented in the library and through e-learning to enhance student learning Other specific duties Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task may not have been identified; therefore employees will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from a manager, including ad hoc projects, to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in the job description.
