Our presenter on Monday February 19, was Kim Jackson, the principal at Kunyung Primary School She was not available on the pupil free days in the first week of term. Kim is an experienced and accredited IB workshop leader. Three of our teachers attended her concept based learning PYP workshop last year and recommended that she work with our whole staff. The Focus for the day was to build our understanding of Concept-based learning within the PYP Framework, which relates directly to one of the targets of our 2018 Annual Implementation Plan [to develop] strong concept based provocations that facilitate deep inquiry and. foster students' interests. [within] the Units of Inquiry. Why is conceptual understanding important? Our kids live in a world full of knowledge that is easily accessible and constantly changing. What remains constant are concepts. Concepts do not change, they remain constant across time and can be applied across a range of contexts. They are big ideas that students grapple with to build deep understanding. Concepts can be a lens to focus student learning. For example the conceptual lens for the current Grade two unit of inquiry is choices. Students explore the big idea of choice in a number of contexts. They might be: choices about what you do in the playground choices about how to work individually and in a group choices about healthy eating choices that can effect the environment. The conceptual lens is applied to contexts that are relevant and of interest to the students and provide a meaningful and authentic framework to teach knowledge and skills. Children s understanding is deepened if related concepts are explored. In this case consider the related concept of responsibility might be introduced and the students asked: If I choose to work in a group what is my responsibility to the group and what is the group s responsibility to me? Students work together to unpack responsibility on both an individual and collective level. In the afternoon, on Monday, Kim worked with each teaching team to review each year level s current unit of inquiry so there were identified key concepts and related concepts. Teachers were very responsive to Kim s input and are eager to apply what they learned to future units of inquiry throughout the year. The work Kim did with teachers has greatest impact being done early in the year and provides a strong foundation for the work of our 2018 Annual Implementation Plan.

If you would like to help please drop into the Library and pick up a bag of books and covering supplies to take home and cover at your leisure. 3 YOGA AND MINDFULNESS CORNER Not knowing is ok Hearing Awareness Week Monday 5th- 9th March 2018 Brighton Primary school will once again participate in Hearing Awareness Week. This is an annual event that provides an opportunity to raise community awareness of hearing impairment and ways to protect one s hearing. Most of us like to know what we are doing and in what direction. Some like knowing exactly what we are doing at all times of the day every day while others take it in our stride and see what the day, week or month has in store. We are human. There isn t a right way. Some people deal with not knowing better than others. The use of time is another aspect of life that some of us measure with a metric that is of acceptance of what is while others are quite hard on ourselves about how we measure the use of our time. If you had 24 or 48 hours of time with nothing to do or nowhere to be, what would you be doing? Or being? Reflect on this in your life. If you want to get in touch or provide welcomed feedback please - deb@yogabean.com.au DON'T MISS OUT Afterschool yoga classes in Performance Various activities will take place in class time to raise community awareness. This will be in conjunction with the sale of butterfly badges. Money raised from the sale of these is donated to the Deafness Foundation, which relies on the support of fundraising. The Deafness Foundation is dedicated to the support of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired through research, prevention, education, early detection and technology. Butterfly badges will be sold next week during the first half of lunch outside the gym foyer. Butterflies Badges: $2.50 each and there is a choice of six colours.

At the end of every week the PYP award recipients for the following Monday morning Assembly will be published on Compass 2. When the newsletter is circulated you will see 2 photos depicting award recipients for the previous 2 weeks.
5 Keeping your child safe at school Does your child have an up to date Asthma School Action Plan? The Asthma School Action Plan tells the school how to manage your child s asthma and what to do if their asthma gets worse. This should be updated & signed by the doctor on an annual basis. These plans are available either on the Compass website under Health Centre documentation, or you can collect a copy from the healthcentre. Does your child carry their reliever puffer and spacer with them at all times? Or is it readily available to the school? Medication needs to be available for your child at school. Please supply their reliever medication and spacer to the school and ensure they are clearly labelled with your child s name. Always make sure you check the expiry date of medication supplied. Even if your child only uses their Ventolin occasionally, it is important for them to have access to a relieving medication in events of symptoms developing, such as thunderstorm asthma. Are you and your child aware of their asthma triggers? Do you take steps to avoid these triggers? Are the Teachers aware of these triggers? It is important for the school office to be notified of any medical conditions your child has, including asthma. This ensures we effectively look after your child should any symptoms develop. 6 News from the Music Room... It s been a busy week with pupils doing auditions to be able to perform in assembly. Grade 3 have been inquiring into rhythmic notation Grade 4 have been challenging themselves to play the keyboards. Grade 5 have been problem solving on the Ukuleles by choosing strumming patterns to suit their playing style. Grade 6 have been discussing the affect politics and music have upon each other by listening to a range of political music.

CLASS REP MEETING AND CHAT WITH ANNY Thank you to all of you who attended our meeting on Tuesday, it was great to fill a few more gaps for Class Reps. A big thank you to Anny and Joel who took the time to come down and have a chat to all of us and answering a number of questions. This will be a monthly event and will take place on the third Tuesday of every month. I have listed below classes that we still require reps for and for the YLL s still needed. Please me at fob@brighton.vic.edu.au if you are interested in becoming a rep. Still needed: YLL for nearly all levels except Grade 1 and Grade 5 CLASS REPS OA 1E 2D, 2E 3C 4A, 4C 5A, 5B, 5C 6C FoB FaceBook Page Recently it was suggested that I have a FoB facebook page (thanks Clara love it). This would be a closed page and only class reps and YLL will have access to it. I can put information and reminders up there and it can be a forum for answering questions. I will let you know as soon as this page has been set up. CLASS LISTS I am just finalising a few things to do with the class lists and anticipate that they will be out early next week. LUNCHEON We have already sold well over 70 tickets for the luncheon. Please see enclosed flyer for details! SCHOOL EVENTS When I began at Brighton Primary FoB used to allocate each year level with a school event. I have decided to re-introduce this and will send out year level and events next week when I have finalised them. EASTER RAFFLE We will be doing an Easter Raffle this year, which will be drawn at the last day of term at our assembly. More details to follow shortly. Have a great week, Tash Scott

10 We have had a busy week at Brighton Primary Camp Australia as we had our pupil free day on Monday where the children did a range of activities such as: Made Quesadilla s Celebrated the Winter Olympics Prep Parents Please be aware of the process for term one and term two of how your child is collected to and from school, if your child attends before school care they will be taken to their line up with Camp Australia staff until their teachers come to bring them inside. For afterschool care, the children will be collected from their classrooms or where the teacher dismisses them outside as the children are to wait with their teachers until collected. If you have any inquiries about this process, please drop into the service to have a chat with the staff who can answer your questions. Open Day: We are having an open day at the service to show you what we do and how we do it! On the 22nd of February at before school care feel free to pop in and meet the educators who will be looking after your children and what we do at the service! School Holiday Program: Our school holiday program bookings are now open, to secure a spot please book in online via the parent portal!
