1 Mr. Polon Phone: x-3272 Dear Math 6/7 Parents and/or Guardians, Welcome to Math 6/7. My name is Mr. Ron Polon. This year we ll be covering in-depth the merging of the Math 6 AND Math 7 Common Core Standards. The Math 6 and Math 7 standards will focus on (1) Ratios and Proportional Relationships, (2) the Number System, (3) Expressions and Equations, (4) Geometry and, (5) Statistics and Probability. There is overlap of some of these grade-level standards; so advanced students should be able to master all of the standards in one year. We will also focus on the Common Core Mathematical Practice Standards which include (1) make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, (2) reason abstractly and quantitatively, (3) construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, (4) model with mathematics, (5) use appropriate tools strategically, (6) attention to precision, (7) look for and make use of structure and, (8) look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. This IS an accelerated course. Students and parents should expect a challenging year. We have lot of material to cover and master this year! Since this is an advanced course, students should expect daily homework, a weekly quiz, and periodic chapter tests. Common Core allows us to cover topics more in-depth and requires the student to better explain their answers. In a sense, math will have a Language Arts aspect. Students and parents will have access to daily homework assignments and grades online through Q. I highly suggest that you monitor your student s progress in my course and ALL courses. We will be using consumable textbooks this year; Go Math - Grade 6 and Go Math - Grade 7. Students will keep the textbooks at home and will remove the appropriate section from the appropriate textbook for classwork. I suggest having a folder to transport the current working section. Since this is a consumable textbook, students can write in it, mark it up, and so forth. If a student misplaces a textbook, they can be purchased online by the student/parent. Textbooks are NOT returned at the end of the year. Students will be provided with online access to textbooks and supporting materials. When we complete a section, I suggest that students retain the removed sections as study guides. When absent, it is the students responsibility to make up missed work per PUSD policy. Chronic absences and truancy is very detrimental to student achievement. I suggest that students have a quiet place and a scheduled time to complete their homework. Please limit distractions, such as cell phones, other electronic devices, siblings, etc. Ensure your student completes their assignments. They should come to class prepared and ready to work. Positive class participation is expected. I do not give extra credit. I do expect my students to be responsible and accountable for their actions. Most students have been in PUSD for seven years or so, and know the rules and expectations. In the following syllabus, I outlined the major ones as reminders, but all rules are to be followed. Regarding calculators, I do request all students have a calculator (no cell phone, ipads, computers, tablets, etc.), but we will not use it on a daily basis. I will let them know when they can use them. I have found that some students are weak in basic computational skills. By having them do basic math computations with paper and pencil, this is one of my ways to reinforce basic skills. I do not loan calculators to students. 2 Math 6/7-2016/2017 Syllabus Welcome to Math 6/7. I want this to be a successful year for all of us. In Math 6/7 we will be merging the Math 6 and Math 7 standards, hence two years of math into one year of study. These standards will focus on (1) Ratios and Proportional Relationships, (2) the Number System, (3) Expressions and Equations, (4) Geometry and, (5) Statistics and Probability. There is overlap of some of the standards, so, with focus, advanced students should be able to master all of the standards in one year. This is an accelerated course. Students should expect a challenging year! Daily Materials At registration you were provided with a list of materials. Please have these materials. You will use pencils, erasers, a generous supply of binder paper, and a red pen (for correcting). Have a scientific calculator (NO cell phone, computer, ipod calculators, etc.). However we will not use it every day. NO sharing of calculators during tests and quizzes. I do NOT loan out my calculators. I will NOT accept work in pen; all work must be in pencil. See me at the start of the school year if you cannot have these materials for class. Classroom Expectations: I expect a positive climate for learning. Be on time and be prepared to learn. Be courteous and respectful to all students, guests, teachers, and property. Your words and actions must be positive (i.e., no swearing, name-calling, rude remarks, put-downs, snickering, bullying, harassment, etc.). Don t laugh at other peoples mistakes; we all make mistakes! While I am lecturing, please be quite and pay attention. If you don t want to learn, that is one thing. When your actions affect the ability of others to learn, I have a problem with that. Do not open your computer in class unless I give you permission. If you don t understand something during class, you should ask! Classroom Rules: I expect ALL students at ALL times to comply with PUSD s Character Education, and to constantly demonstrate; Responsibility, Compassion, Self-Discipline, Honesty, Respect, and Integrity. After being in the Pleasanton Unified School District for some seven-plus years, all students have a good ideal of the rules and expectations. Each student is responsible in following ALL the rules. However, these are the more common rules that some students choose to not obey: NO eating, chewing gum, or drinking in class. Only pure water is allowed. If you play with the water bottle, you will be asked to put it away as well. Eating is allowed ONLY in the Quad area. No electronic devices (ipods, cells, laser pointers, cameras, computers, tablets, etc.) in class. If I see them, I confiscate them and talk to your parents. You will need to retrieve them from an administrator. No hats or sunglasses in class. Remove these items BEFORE entering the room. Know and obey all dress code requirements. All trash is to be placed in appropriate recycling or the trash container. If I see you littering the floor, you will vacuum the entire floor at the end of class. The trashcan is NOT a basketball hoop! Do not take or use other people's property without their permission for any reason. That's stealing! A classroom is to be an emotional and physically safe environment. No harassment of any kind, bullying, namecalling, racist remarks, teasing, profanity, obscene or indecent acts, etc. No throwing ANYTHING in class. I will maintain academic integrity. Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are reading or working on other homework, I ll take it and give it back after five school days. Take what you need out of your backpacks. Otherwise they are to be zipped closed and on the floor. Everybody has the right to an education. I will not accept one student taking that right away from another. 3 Consequences for not following expectations, rules, or procedures Student will be given a verbal warning or the visual teacher look. Student will be counseled during class. Possibly a new seat will be assigned Student will be sent out of classroom for a time-out Parent/Guardian will be contacted for remediation Student will be sent, with a referral, to a school administrator Seating/Tardy Policy Walk into the classroom in an orderly fashion and immediately take your seat. If you are not in your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy. I take attendance based upon my seating chart. I dismiss you; the bell does not. Sharpen your pencils before class starts. If you are late to class, you will have to go to the office, or prior teacher, and get a pass. Detention will be given if you are constantly late to class. Parents will be contacted. Textbooks You will be using consumable textbooks called Go Math (Grade 6 and 7). This is your book. You can write in it. You do not have to bring the entire textbook to class. I will let you know what section we ll be working on and you just need to bring that section. I will suggest that you place the current working section into a binder to keep things neat. When we complete a section, I suggest that you retain the removed sections as study guides for the future. Before/After School Help and Student/Teacher Conferences Except when I am assigned school duties, media club, or when parent conferences are scheduled, feel free to get extra help, discuss grades, make-up work, and etc. either before or after school, or during my lunch. However, do not expect to have conferences during class. Homework Homework is practice of a new skill that you learned. Homework is due at the beginning of class. If it is not done, you earned a zero for the assignment (unless you have an excused absence). Homework assignments will be from various places (textbook, workbooks, worksheets, etc.). Make sure you write all assignments in your organizer. I try to post all assignments in a timely manner in Q, but I cannot guarantee it. If you are sick, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE to turn in missing assignments. Per PUSD policy; 1 day for each day of excused absence. Absences can be detrimental to your grade. Even though you can turn in missing assignments, you cannot make-up the class lecture that was given. Place all late/missing assignments in my bucket, or you can show it to me. Your daily homework grade will be worth 6 points. With few exceptions, you can expect about 30 minutes of homework daily, including weekends. Homework is usually due the following school day. Homework is graded based upon effort and completeness, not necessarily accuracy. I m looking for each problem to be attempted and the appropriate work shown. If you do not understand a problem, it is your responsibility to ask to see a particular problem the following day in class. Your name, date, and assignment MUST be written in the upper right corner of all assignments. If you turned in an assignment, but shows up as missing in Q, check the no-name tray. You will also be assigned supplemental homework assignments. When I assign these, I will let you know the due date. Late Work (Unexcused) Unexcused late work is given a zero. 4 Absent/Early dismissal make-up work If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed, complete the assignment, and turn it in within guidelines. Anything I assigned will be on Q. PUSD policy allows you one-day make up time for each day of an excused absent. If you do not make up the assignment(s) within the allotted time, it will be changed to missing. If you missed a test or quiz, it is your responsibility to see me to arrange a time to make it up. I usually do not allow quizzes/test to be made-up during class time. Some students leave on vacation before the school year ends. Per PUSD policy, I will NOT allow any quizzes and/or tests to be taken prior to the scheduled quiz/test date. Any missed quizzes or tests must be made up after the initial quiz/test date. Bathroom Policy Unless I am provided with a medical excuse from a doctor, students will be allow three (3) visits to the restroom each semester. Classes are 46 minutes long (39 on Wednesday), so this should not be a problem. I will have a sign-out sheet at my desk. Please ask first! You must sign-out and take the hall pass with you. Do not ask to go to the restroom while I am lecturing, the answer will be no. Grading Policy Your grade will be based on your scores on tests (50%), quizzes (30%), homework (10%), and classwork (10%). Tests/Quizzes: If you show your work, I can possibly give you partial credit for a wrong answer. ALL work must be in pencil. Work in pen will be a zero. Neatness counts. I will consider rounding grades up if the grade is within.5% of the next higher letter grade. My decision will be based upon overall homework performance, positive class participation, attendance, and the current trend of your grade. The grading scale is: % A % B % C % D < 59.9% F Extra Credit I do not offer extra credit. Please don't ask. Do your best work throughout the school year! Bottom Line I ll be prepared to teach.
