Youth With A Mission Brisbane Basic Leadership School (Certificate IV in Christian Missions 10173NAT) Course Handbook
Basic Leadership School Hi and welcome to an overview of our Basic Leadership School. The BLS is a hands-on leadership development programme for those who either feel they have leadership potential or those who want to be empowered to disciple others. As a participant of BLS you will receive some excellent instruction on biblical leadership, have opportunities to develop your gifting as you serve others like Jesus did and finally be mentored and coached in a supportive Christian environment. You will be learning and practicing leadership simultaneously. A leadership crisis exists both in the body of Christ and in the world. There is a cry for leaders who will walk the talk, leaders exemplifying true servanthood, who lead from the front. Paul in 1 Tim 3:1 says to aspire to leadership is an honourable ambition, provided we aspire to the model of leadership Jesus provided. If you have such an ambition, then the BLS is worth considering Contents What is the Basic Leadership School? Page 3 Why do a BLS? How does the BLS fit into the broader picture? What does a BLS hope to achieve and values it upholds? 3 What is a Basic Leadership School? The Basic Leadership School is an 86 week internship with Youth with a Mission. The course is designed to train and mentor young leaders in the principles and practice of Bible based leadership. The internship requires BLS trainees be involved in a ministry of YWAM Brisbane in order to apply the leadership principles they are learning and to take various roles of leadership in those ministries. During the internship, trainees will be involved in leading small groups of people in both a discipleship and leadership role. Trainees will lead small outreach teams, projects or events, oversee small groups and be involved in the running of the ministry which they are involved. During the BLS trainees will also have lectures and assignments of their own which will highlight leadership principles and assist trainees in developing biblical based leadership. Trainees will be assessed on their character development, leadership skills, and missions understanding and on their development of personal skills and abilities related to leading. Why do a BLS? The purpose of the BLS is: To train and release young people into leadership responsibilities; To give young people a basic understanding of and practice in biblical leadership; To allow the student to grow and develop in their own gifting, and; To provide hands on experience in ministry whilst being mentored and coached in a supportive Christian environment. The BLS provides a valuable time for young people to be further equipped for ministry and missions. How does the BLS fit into the broader picture? The course is designed to compliment the purpose of YWAM Brisbane by mobilizing young people to missions and helping people in need. The BLS will provide the trainee with a broad-based biblical foundation in leadership principles, which can be translated into a YWAM, local church or crosscultural context. What values does the BLS uphold? The BLS objectives embrace YWAM s principles and values and maintain those of equipping men and women spiritually, culturally, intellectually, and professionally and inspire them to use their Godgiven talents to communicate and demonstrate the good news to all nations. Additionally they uphold our dependence on God, character development, servant leadership and hands on involvement in missions. Course Structure The BLS is an internship style-training program. Trainees receive formal/classroom training as well as study groups, assignments and activities. See below for details of the break up of the Study period. During Study Period 1 and 5, we have intensive training weeks with lectures, workshops and discussion studies. During Study Periods 2 and 6 formal training takes place in short weekly sessions, with the remaining time used to apply the principles learned to practical projects in a YWAM Brisbane ministry role. Study Periods 3, 4 and 7 vary some, but involve more information training while operating in those practical ministry projects. This gives them opportunity to put their new found
knowledge into practice by assisting in the leading of short term outreaches and projects, leading small groups or teams of people and general input into the Ministry in which they re serving. The BLS consists of 3 Phases, broken up into 7 study periods: Phase 1 Study Period 1 Initial formal training 5 weeks Study Period 2 Ministry application approximately weeks Study Period 3 Ministry application approximately 8-12 weeks Phase 2 Study Period 4 Ministry Application approximately 20 weeks (including annual leave) Phase 3 Study Period 5 Formal training 3 weeks Study Period 6 Ministry application approximately weeks Study Period 7 Ministry Application approximately 8-12 weeks We have 3 intake dates- January, July, August. Roles while in the BLS As a part of the internship you will staff in a role in YWAM Brisbane as a way to apply the ministry and leadership principles you are learning. There are opportunities for this, so we d like to discuss with you what could be the most beneficial for your interests and experience. - Staffing a DTS - In this case, Phase 1 would include staffing the Course and co-leading an outreach team, Phase 2 would include involvement in another department or ministry. Phase 3 would involve staffing the same course a second time, and leading the outreach. - Staffing a second-level school To staff a 2 nd level school (such as the School of Digital Filmmaking, School of Acting for the Screen or Bible Core Course) participants need to have previously completed that Course. Participants will staff the lecture phase of that course (3 months) as Study Period 1 and 2, 5 and 6; and then Study Periods 3,4 and 7 will be applying the training in other ministries within the centre (for those staffing SDF or SAS this would primarily be within the Initiative Film Production Company). - Staff in a ministry on Base This can be in a variety of departments/ministries on Base. Let us know your interests and we ll discuss the options available. Upon acceptance we ll give you further details of the structure and schedule of the Course. If you have further questions feel free to write us and ask for your specific scenario. Methods of Instruction FORMAL TRAINING- The following weeks are what will typically happen during the formal / classroom training aspects of the BLS - Study Periods 1 and 5), and following with weekly sessions. This can be up to hours in the classroom plus assignments. Lectures by BLS leader, visiting lecturers (pastors or other ministry leaders) or base leadership. Group discussion on topics after lectures, during team meetings or informal discussion on how principles may be applied in specific instances related to your area of ministry Workshops and personal interaction. One on one discipling with BLS leader or other mentor. Prayer.
ON-THE-JOB TRAINING- The informal training or on-the-job training happens outside the classroom in the ministry/department which you will be serving. You ll be given specific assignments and tasks to accomplish during this phase of your internship, such as discipling others, leading groups of people, organising and managing events or projects etc. There will be about 3 hours of formal training in class each week, plus a couple of hours of assignments, and between hours of on-the-job training. Assessment Methods A variety of Assessment methods will be used to gauge your competence in each of the units listed under Course Outcomes including (but not limited to): - Written book reports - Demonstration of various tasks and skills as well as demonstration of Godly behaviour and attitudes and leadership skills (evaluation form from Supervisor, team members and Mentor) - Bible Character Study- delivered orally - Written ministry reports - One on one discussions - Self-evaluation You can expect to have 2-4 hours of assessment work each week (depending on the load for that week, or even for that Study Period). Facilities and Resources Youth With A Mission Brisbane is located in the northwest suburbs of Mitchelton. We have a 2 acre campus with 8 main buildings. These buildings house all of our students, about 1/3 of our staff, offices, classrooms, dining room and kitchen. Trainees are provided a room with other YWAM Brisbane staff, as a part of the internship either on campus or in one of our rented houses in the neighbourhood. Classes will take place on the YWAM Base in one of our classrooms. At some points in the school you may have informal training take place away from the Base. We ll give you notice when this is to take place. Please see the Preparing to Come manual for more information about your facilities and community. Computers are available for use. The main office computers may be used for work and study purposes throughout the day, but have limited access for personal use. We recommend if you have a laptop computer to bring it for your own ease. Teachers and trainers will be made up of resident staff and visiting guest speakers. All speakers are specialized in their field. Guest speakers may be other YWAM Leaders, church leaders, etc. We will provide you with books from our library and handouts required for training and assessment of the course. The Course costs cover only tuition of the internship (registration costs, guest speakers, handouts and books, etc). For other living and ministry costs, please talk to the Registrar.

Course Expectations It is expected that students will uphold the requirements of the course, including the following expectations. If any issues arise we would prefer to address them casually and relationally. Under some circumstances, it is a requirement that we notify the department of Immigration if any behaviour goes uncorrected. Students will: - meet academic course requirements (including all assignments) - maintain Godly conduct in character and behaviour (see Code of Conduct) - Meet participation requirements- We expect that each student will participate in all activities, not just with their presence but by contributing to the learning experience. This includes being a part of group discussions, completing assignments, discussing what God is doing in their life with their staff, etc. This is to take full advantage of the training and the learning environment. - Pay all course fees according to the payment schedule - Meet attendance requirements- Full attendance (at least 80%) is required for the completion of this course. This includes all scheduled activities, classes, ministry responsibilities during each of the Phases, as well as local and overseas outreach. Course Progress Policy Our heart is to disciple and equip you in your destiny and purpose. We will work alongside you to see you reach competency at the end of the course. To help you learn and grow in knowledge, skills and character related to the course outcomes, you will be monitored to ensure that you are meeting course requirements throughout the course, and that you will finish the course in expected time. Satisfactory progress is also a requirement to maintain a student visa. You are required to maintain and meet at least 80% of the course assignments for each study period by the end of that study period. If you have not met this by the end of the study period you are in, and therefore are not meeting course progress, the course leader will speak with you directly and will set an Intervention Strategy in place. The Intervention Strategy, or Action Plan will be put in place as a way to support you to see you meet the requirements through the next study period. This Action Plan may include additional academic or emotional support, disciplinary actions, possibilities of re-assessment, etc. If you are not meeting the requirements set in place in the Action Plan, and therefore are not meeting course progress, you will not be able to move on to the next study period. This can result in removal from the Diploma course, which can lead to cancellation of your student visa. For a full read of the Institute for the Nations Course Progress Policy please request it from the Course Leader or Registrar. The above is regards to Academic requirements. Those student not meeting behavioral or character standards, may not be permitted to continue due to the expectations of being an intern in the missions Community, or due to the sensitivity of cultural, ministry or team dynamics. In which case, a decision will be made by the training leadership team regarding your continuation at that point.
Upon Completion of the Course Upon successful completion of the Course the trainee will receive a Certificate IV in Christian Missions (10173NAT) with the Institute for the Nations, Australia. This is a recognized qualification through the Training and Accreditation Council of Australia. Graduates will also receive 24 elective credits towards a degree in the College of Christian Ministries within the University of the Nations.
