2 Course Description: Surveys British literature from its origins to the present. Includes historical background, as well as social and literary development. Emphasizes appreciation of selected works of a range of writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and medievalism Wordsworth, and Woolf. Prerequisites and/or Corequisites: Prerequisites: ENGL 1302, ENGL 2311 or equivalent; must have passed the reading section of the THEA or approved alternative test or credit for READ Semester Hours: 3 lecture hours Course Notes and Instructor Recommendations: It is imperative that the student stay on top of the reading, and writing requirements for this class. Good note taking skills along with time management, and organizational skills will be essential to the success of the class. Course Objectives and/or Competencies: To read, discuss, analyze, learn to appreciate, a variety of work from a broad spectrum of writers To place, discuss and analyze the material within its historical, cultural, social and political contexts To learn about writers lives and how those lives may or may not have affected their work To write about literature to a great degree to write about it in a clear, analytical, thoughtful and correct way. This includes both researched and non-researched projects When required to produce researched work, to do so in a correct and meticulous way To use literary analysis as a method for improving problem solving and critical thinking skills To learn more about literary trends, definitions, terms, etc and apply those to individual pieces of material; to be capable of discussing literature in an academically appropriate manner To listen to others views, and ideally, broaden our own perspectives. Week 15 Rollover week catch up FINAL EXAMINATION: Week 16 Tentative Schedule (Schedule may be change as instructor deems necessary for student understanding and practice) Course Grading Information: Students who do not receive credit for English 0300 must re-enroll in the course and receive credit for it before enrolling in the next level of English. For a 0300 student, the next level is For a 0301 student, the next level is English 1301 or Business To receive credit for English 0300 or 0301, students must meet the following criteria: Have a 70 average or above, according to the following scale: the major writings, projects, = 60% (all essays must be completed). daily and lab work = 20% the final essay exam = 20% (This will be given a numerical grade by the instructor). Literature courses contain two major exams during the course of the semester they are worth 100pts, cover very definite areas of literature, and are given extensive review prior to being conducted. These make up 40% of the final course grade. They are comprised of passage ID/short answer and essay questions. The final exam is comprehensive focusing heavily on the

8 material covered since the previous exam; it is also worth 100 pts, is reviewed and includes the same three sections passage, short answer and essay but typically includes more than one essay. It is worth 20% of the final grade. Any research project is worth 20% of the final grade as is the highly structured in class writing. In class writing scores are averaged out of the final number possible which varies from semester to semester. ***Students in literature classes are given multi-page discussions of how exams and in class writing are conducted; any research project is also given strict written and verbal instructions. In addition, all literature classes are given a detailed Plagiarism Statement. ***Plagiarized work is one lifted from the Internet or some other source, purchased from an outside source, written by someone other than the person turning it in and/or a researched project which gives no proper or acceptable citation for researched material. Penalties may range from an F to a zero on an assignment, a conference with the instructor and any other appropriate administrative official and/or a report of the offense sent to the college disciplinary officer. Late Work, Attendance, and Make up Work Policies: All work is due on the date assigned. (If you miss an assignment date, notify your instructor as soon as possible). Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students. Students will be counted absent from class meetings missed, beginning with the first official day of classes. Students, whether present or absent, are responsible for all material presented or assigned for a course and will be held accountable for such materials in the determination of course grades. Absence from 20 percent of scheduled lecture and/or laboratory meetings will be taken as evidence that a student does not intend to complete the course. Unless the instructor has reason to believe the student will complete the course, the student will be withdrawn from the course with a grade of W. The instructor may or may not reinstate students who have been withdrawn because of absences. Each absence will count toward attendance requirements in each course. Students will be permitted to make up class work and assignments missed due to absences caused by (1) authorized participation in official College functions, (2) a documented personal illness, or (3) a documented illness or a death in the immediate family, or (4) observance of religious holy days. Also, the instructor has the prerogative of determining whether a student may make up work missed due to absences for other reasons. It is the student s responsibility to inform the instructor of the reason for an absence and to do so in a timely fashion. While the instructor not does need a documented statement when a student is absent, if the student wishes to have make-up work, documentation is required. Student Behavioral Expectations or Conduct Policy:

9 Students will be asked to leave the classroom if they are disruptive. Disruptions include ringing cell phones, constant talking or other noise making behaviors, temper tantrums, rudeness to others in the classroom, habitual late arrivals, walking in front of instructor during lectures, etc. Students will be required to see the college disciplinarian before returning to the classroom. MCC Academic Integrity Statement: The Center for Academic Integrity defines academic integrity as a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. From these values flow principles of behavior that enable academic communities to translate ideals into action. Individual faculty members determine their class policies and behavioral expectations for students. Students who commit violations of academic integrity should expect serious consequences.
