Traineeships The Traineeships programme is one ha suppors young people o develop he skills hey need o secure and succeed in employmen, including appreniceships. Traineeships will fi wihin broader sudy programmes for 16- o 19-year-olds. Employers ell us ha hey are concerned ha young people ofen lack he righ skills and aiudes when hey apply for an appreniceship or oher employmen. Traineeships offer young people he opporuniy o underake a subsanial work placemen and work skills raining, alongside suppor o improve heir English and mahemaics. Depending on he young person s needs, a range of oher suppor and flexible raining may be offered o help hem develop heir skills and progress quickly ono an appreniceship or secure oher employmen. GCSE / A LEVEL GCSEs - Qualificaion GCSE one full GCSE GCSE Double Award equivalen o wo full GCSEs Learning Mosly classroom learning. Mix of heory and subjec based invesigaions. The amoun of pracical work depends on he subjec. Assessmen Mix of wrien examinaions and inernal assessmen. Achievemen is graded A* o G. Some subjecs have wo iers of assessmen: Foundaion and Higher. Having 5 GCSEs a grades C and above (including English and mahemaics) gives you a much bigger choice of pos-16 opions. The English Baccalaureae cerificae is awarded on he achievemen of a core of GCSEs in English, mahemaics, a humaniy (hisory or geography), he sciences and a language. A levels A Levels like mos GCSEs have already been updaed and modernised. Sronger connecions beween opics and more open ended quesions increase he level of challenge for sudens. A Level sudens will be able o gain an A* grade, deermined a A2, o recognise he higher levels of achievemen. Appreniceship As an Apprenice, you can earn whils you learn and gain naionally recognised qualificaions a he same ime such as a Naional Vocaional Qualificaion (NVQ), BTEC or Ciy and Guilds. Appreniceships come in hree levels. Inermediae Level Appreniceships - equivalen o 5 good GCSE passes Advanced Appreniceships - equivalen o 2 A level passes Higher Appreniceships - lead o qualificaions a NVQ L4 or in some cases a foundaion degree There is no se ime o complee an Appreniceship as hey vary widely in conen and size. The lengh of ime aken will depend on he abiliy of he individual apprenice and he employer s requiremens. Raising he Paricipaion Age in educaion and raining does no mean raising he school leaving age, nor does i mean ha every young person needs o be in full ime educaion. Young people will be able o paricipae in: full ime educaion or raining e.g. a college or 6h form; work based learning e.g. an Appreniceship; par ime accredied educaion or raining if employed, self-employed or voluneering - minimum 20 hours per week. I may sui some young people o learn on a par-ime basis alongside employmen and paricipaion can ake place in a range of places. There is more choice available afer he age of 16 because here are no longer compulsory subjecs. These are open o all suiable qualified young people who know wha hey wish o do for a living. Your child will receive a lo of suppor o help hem choose well suppor ha includes careers educaion, informaion and advice. Careers educaion lessons will encourage your child o hink abou and se goals for he fuure. They will learn how o find and use careers informaion o research heir ideas and explore differen opions. They will also learn how o make decisions and presen hemselves well in applicaions and inerviews. The careers informaion hey will receive includes opions informaion from school, college and raining providers and suppors young people wih access o he Isle of Wigh s online area prospecus. Your child will receive careers advice and guidance from many differen people. Their subjec eachers may discuss he career opporuniies ha sudying heir subjec can open up. Research shows us ha young people wih level 3 qualificaions (e.g. A Levels) earn on average 25 per cen more over heir lifeime han hose wihou level 3 qualificaions. Pos 16 financial assisance Schools, colleges and raining organisaions currenly have funds hey can use, a heir discreion, o help sudens who need financial suppor o help hem o sar or say on heir course. The funds are limied, so if you are having financial difficulies, speak o suden suppor services or a uor a heir school, college or raining provider. The Governmen has announced a new 180 million bursary scheme o help he mos vulnerable yearolds coninue in full-ime educaion. The scheme began in 2011 and he money will be disribued by colleges. The scheme is made up of wo pars: he mos vulnerable year-olds will be given bursaries of 1,200 a year. These include children in care, care leavers and hose on income suppor; schools and colleges will hen have he discreion o award bursaries o suppor any suden who faces genuine financial barriers o paricipaion such as coss of ranspor, food or equipmen. Schools and colleges will have flexibiliy o pay larger or smaller bursaries as hey see fi o any young people wihou unnecessary bureaucracy. Schools and colleges can also decide if he bursary is paid weekly, monhly or annually and wheher i is linked o behaviour or aendance. Care o Learn If you are a young paren, Care o Learn can help wih he cos of your childcare while you're learning. How Care o Learn can help you If you are a paren under 20 a he sar of your course, Care o Learn can help pay for your childcare and relaed ravel coss while you re learning. You can ge up o 160 per child per week for childcare coss. The subjec or course you ake is up o you. For example, you can choose wheher you wan o ake a qualificaion or no. You can also choose wheher you wan o learn a a college or hrough a course in your communiy, such as a a children's cenre. Wherever you decide o learn, you can be confiden ha your child is being safely looked afer. When you ge Care o Learn, i s up o you wha you learn. You could choose a course ha lass a few days or one ha lass for several years. There are no se hours, so you could sudy par ime or full ime. Your chosen course could help o build a beer fuure for you and your family. More and more employers are looking for people wih higher level skills and qualificaions. There are housands of opporuniies available, ranging from confidence building courses in he local communiy o 2 year college courses. Your chosen course doesn need o lead o a qualificaion bu i does need o receive some public funding. Professional and career developmen loans Professional and career developmen loans are bank loans se a a compeiive ineres rae. They are available o learners aged 18+ and can be used o suppor fullime, par-ime or disance learning courses for up o wo years, as long as he course leads o a rade, occupaion or profession. The EFA will pay he ineres on he loan while he learner is sudying and for up o one monh aferwards. The learner hen repays he loan o he bank over an agreed period a a fixed rae of ineres. Volunary Young Voluneers In December 2012 he Isle of Wigh Council in parnership wih Communiy Acion launched an iniiaive o offer voluneering opporuniies o young people who are under 19 and no in educaion, employmen or raining. The aim of he programme is o enable young people o develop and gain key skills and experiences hrough medium o long erm voluneering opporuniies.
