1 CHAPTER 3 WE ARE UNITED GLOBALLY IN OUR GOALS AND VALUES In this Chapter, findings of the Global Vision discussion are organised per each of the six questions. Each question contains global results as well as the view on results from different dimensions: library types, library experience, regions, and professional units.

2 HOW TO READ CHARTS Findings are organised by question; each question contains Global Top Five and charts analysing results from different dimensions: Library Types, Library Experience, Regions, and Professional Units Navigation List of this Chapter will help to locate the results of interest per question Brighter colours in charts mean more votes or higher ranking; results are displayed as percentages Charts are sorted in TOTAL results of the dimension analysed When describing Top Fives UPPERCASE is used to highlight the number one item on the Top Five list When describing Top Fives turquoise colour is used to highlight items different from Global Top Five

VALUES GLOBAL TOP FIVE Chart 3.1 Core values of libraries Global Top Five Free and open access to everyone regardless of race, colour, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation was the most common response. Professional Unit Report The number one core value is EQUAL AND FREE ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE. Global Top Five also includes other important values such as: Commitment to dissemination of information and knowledge Protection of cultural heritage and memory Commitment to community engagement and empowerment Dedication to learning

10 VALUES DIMENSION LIBRARY TYPES Chart 3.2 Core values of libraries - Global Online voting results by library type We are different, but we are equal at a library; library treats us equally. National Workshop Report EQUAL AND FREE ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE is shared value across all library types. It is the top value for all library types except national libraries where Protection of cultural heritage and memory has been voted slightly higher. Academic, research and school libraries gave more votes for Dedication to learning, while public and special libraries focus more on community engagement. 161

There s a special value in libraries being a third place. Equality of access to information and supporting personal development were also emphasized as important features of libraries. 17 VALUES DIMENSION LIBRARY EXPERIENCE Chart 3.9 Core values of libraries - Global Online voting results by library experience Libraries are free, open, neutral, and inclusive meeting points which support free opinion building, democracy, digitalizing, literacy and access to literature and information. Librarians with greater experience (i.e. those with greater number of years worked in libraries) assign greater value to Professionalism and ethical conduct comparing to librarians with less library experience. 168

18 VALUES DIMENSION REGIONS Chart 3.10 Core values of libraries - Global results by region All the above are core values of all libraries. All libraries must strive to achieve them. Commitment to dissemination of information and knowledge is another value with high alignment between regions. Commitment to community engagement and empowerment is voted higher than an average in all regions except Europe. 169
