1 MARSHALL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Mrs. Charlotte Zajac SYLLABUS FOR ADVANCED ALGEBRA/TRIGONOMETRY (Course #3124) Spring 2014 Room #140 Course Description: Prerequisites: Algebra II and Geometry with at least a B average or teacher recommendation. This course is designed as a fourth math credit, following Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, and preceding Pre-Calculus. This course may serve as (1) a final high school math course for university path students not planning to enter a field emphasizing math, science or technology, or (2) an intermediate course leading into Pre-Calculus for those who do plan to enter a technical field. Focus is on relations, functions, curve sketching, exponents, logarithms, trigonometry, matrices, probability and statistics, coordinate geometry and linear programming. Course Outline: First Quarter Unit One-Equations, Inequalities and Mathematical Modeling Graphs of Equations Linear Equations in One Variable Modeling with Linear Equations Quadratic Equations and Applications Complex Numbers Other Types of Equations Linear Inequalities in One Variable Other Types of Inequalities Unit Two-Functions and Their Graphs Linear Equations in Two Variables Functions Analyzing Graphs of Functions A Library of Parent Functions Transformations of Functions Combinations of Functions: Composite Functions Inverse Functions Second Quarter Unit Three-Polynomial Functions Quadratic Functions and Models Polynomial Functions of Higher Degree Polynomial and Synthetic Division Zeros of Polynomial Functions Mathematical Modeling and Variation Unit Four-Rational Functions and Conics Rational Functions and Asymptotes Graphs of Rational Functions Conics Translation of Conics Third Quarter Unit Five-Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

2 Exponential Functions and Their Graphs Logarithmic Functions and Their Graphs Properties of Logarithms Exponential and Logarithmic Equations Exponential and Logarithmic Models Fourth Quarter Unit Six/Seven-Trigonometry Angles and Their Measure Right Triangle Trigonometry Trigonometric Functions of Any Angle Graphs of Sine and Cosine Functions Graphs of Other Trigonometric Functions Inverse Trigonometric Functions Law of Sines Law of Cosines Supplies: All assignments are to be written in PENCIL on LOOSE-LEAF PAPER. I recommend each student have a SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR of their own to use at all times. Graphing calculators will be available to use in class. Course Curriculum: See State Standards at Textbook is Larson s Algebra and Trigonometry, 8th Edition. Classroom Rules: Rules will be discussed during class, but basically revolve around RESPECT, for yourself, others and school property. You can access current Marshall County School Board Policy at documents/type.asp?itype=6&iboard=24 and the MCHS Handbook at Any infractions will be handled on a case-by-case basis and will progress as follows: 1 st Offense Documented Warning 2 nd Offense Classroom Consequence (depending on severity of offense) 3 rd Offense Parent/Guardian contact 4 th Offense Discipline referral to administration A few policy changes for this year are as follows: No outside food or drink will be allowed in class. No one will be allowed to leave the room during class; be sure to use the restroom before class and bring all supplies that are needed. Student conduct will be reported on report cards.

3 Grading Scale: A B C D F 0-69 Grading Categories: Homework 10% Assessments 30% Quizzes/Labs 20% 9 weeks tests 25% Projects 15% Student Expectations: Attendance: It is impossible to replicate a class that has been missed and, because we use block scheduling, each school day is equivalent to two regular class periods. Please try and schedule appointments around classes when possible. Make-up Work: It is the student s responsibility to ask for make-up work, including any quizzes or tests that have been missed. Board policy states that a student is allowed one day per day of absence to make up any missed work (Policy #6.2001). Homework Policy: Homework will be assigned most every day and should be used by the student to practice new skills. I Will check homework assignments on a random basis for completeness. Project: All students will be required to complete two projects during the semester (one per nine week grading period) that will represent 15% of their grade. They will be graded individually and very little class time will be used to work on them. Parent-Teacher Communication: The best way to communicate with me is through czajac@k12tn.net. You may also leave a message in the office (phone number is (931) ) and I will return your call during my planning time or after school. I will periodically send text messages to those who subscribe to the service (no replies are allowed text will originate from an anonymous number). Students and parents are encouraged to subscribe by to (724) I have a web page that can be accessed through a link on the MCHS web site; please check it periodically for updates and changes. Remediation/Tutoring/Test Makeup: Available Monday-Thursday from 3:05 4:05 pm in various math classrooms (Monday is my day). I will also be available from 7:00 7:45 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays in my classroom. Students should also take advantage of the daily Common Study period to get additional help when needed.

4 Classroom Renaissance Incentives: For students who have earned Renaissance cards, the following incentives will be given in this class: Blue Card White Card Black Card Gray Card 20 points added to 15 points added to 10 points added to 5 points added to lowest test grade Awards cannot be combined; higher award will be given.
