4 SUMMER CHALLENGE 1 The Periodic Table is a list of all the known elements. Pick one element and write a short essay about this element, giving its physical and chemical properties, its structure, its group (if relevant), its discovery (if relevant) as well as its uses in everyday life. 2 The amount of substance (mol/moles) is an important concept in Chemistry and will form a foundation to all of your work in A level Chemistry. Produce a short summary document on what a mol is and what the term amount of substance means, including any relevant formulae. 9 COURSE OVERVIEW AS-level physics is separated into 5 distinct topics, Newtonian Mechanics, Materials, Electricity, Waves and Quantum phenomenon. A2 Physics includes all of the As topics as well as Kinetic theory, Simple Harmonic motion, Astrophysics, Particle and Nuclear physics and Medical Physics. Entry requirements: Grade 5/B in Maths and a Grade 5/B in English Language or English Literature, plus one of the following: 2 x Grade B in GCSE Core + Additional Science or Grade B in GCSE Physics Exam board: OCR Careers -Physics is an incredibly well sought after A level when applying to universities and will afford access to almost all degree courses. Write a list of as many laboratory hazards as possible that you can think of. Using this list write down 5 key rules that students should follow that will help to keep people safe whilst working in the laboratory. On a Periodic Table of the Elements identify the location of alkali metals, the halogens, transition metals and Noble gases. 3 As the extended certificate contains aspects of all 3 sciences; biology, chemistry and physics remind yourself of some key aspects of each subject by: a) Listing the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells b) Drawing dot and cross diagrams for sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, methane and oxygen c) Describing the different energy transfers that take place when bouncing a ball BTEC National Certificate Applied Science

12 COURSE OVERVIEW BTEC National Certificate provides an overview of working within a laboratory environment and is ideal for those students who wish to further develop practical skills and gain some general scientific understanding without having to learn about specialist areas within science. Assessment This course is 100% coursework with no external exams. You will need to complete a number of assignments which must be submitted to meet firm deadlines in order to complete the course. Entry requirements: Grade 5/B in Maths and a Grade 5/B in English Language or English Literature, plus 4 other GCSEs at grade C or above which should include at least one of Core or Additional science. Exam board: Pearson. Wider learning Opportunities for the development of practical skills, analytical skills and critical thinking. Careers The national certificate in itself will not lead to a career within science but will offer an enhancement to the university applications of students studying subjects in arts and humanities. 18 COURSE OVERVIEW The course contains 12 units on all three aspects of science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will be assessed mainly by coursework but two units are assessed using an exam. As part of the course you will carry out many practical activities both on and off site, including field work at Cannon Hill Park. This course can lead to studying the level 3 BTEC in Applied Science which can lead to many science related degrees. Level 2 Applied Science
