2 Welcome This course brochure and our web pages present a wide range of professional development opportunities for science educators at all Key Stages. Our courses will be continually scheduled over the academic year, so please check the website for your nearest date or venue to book. If you can t find the training that you are looking for please do get in touch - we are always ready to help, support and collaborate to meet your science professional development needs. 3 Primary Programme Making a real difference to science education in your local area The National Science Learning Network is the largest UK provider of subject-specific Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers, technicians and support staff working with pupils aged Across England, our Science Learning Partnerships offer a diverse programme of research led science CPD with proven impact on teacher development and student outcomes. We support professional learning opportunities to enhance teaching approaches, pedagogy and subject knowledge to provide the best education available, so that they, in turn, can inspire and excite students with intellectually stimulating and relevant STEM education and develop the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians. Funded by the Department for Education (DfE); we offer generous financial bursaries, 70% of the fee paid for a wide variety of CPD from full day courses to flexible working with twilights and web based delivery. We also offer recognition so teachers and senior leaders can track engagement and impact of professional development, thus supporting career progression. 4 National Science Learning Network Impact, quality and reach The National Science Learning Network, is making a real difference to science education across England. Consisting of the National Science Learning Network in York and conveniently located Science Learning Partnerships (SLPs) throughout the country. We develop and deliver high-quality, cutting-edge science CPD support across the country, from primary to post-16 and have reached a potential four million students in 2014/15. Our SLPs combine local expertise in teaching and applying science, facilitating CPD, and providing school-to-school support. They are led by local teaching school alliances, schools and colleges with excellence in science, higher education institutions, and other local partners with cutting-edge expertise in science. 5 Primary Programme Financial support available now! Impact Awards Making professional development affordable We are delighted to offer bursaries known as Impact Awards, which are provided by the Department for Education. These bursaries are available for many of the CPD activities offered by their Science Learning Partnerships across England and are equivalent to 70% of the CPD fee. Impact Awards can be used to contribute towards covering the cost of CPD fees, supply cover, travel, accommodation, resources and any other way to improve the teaching of science in your school or college. Impact Awards are available to individuals from all state funded schools, including maintained schools, academies and free schools. For further information about Impact Awards and eligibility criteria please visit: Don t miss out on the financial support available for your school! In , 100% of state funded schools that applied for an Impact Award received this bursary. To receive yours, all you need to do is complete the course and an impact form. Schools are able to claim multiple Impact Awards throughout the academic year. Course fees Our pricing policy is subject to an annual review by the DfE. 6 National Science Learning Network Our support we provide is grounded in up-todate research evidence drawn from education and cutting edge STEM. Participants feedback consistently rates our support as one of the highest quality and most impactful experiences individuals and teams have had during their teaching career. Through the wider network we are able to offer a flexible approach to CPD. Our venues are strategically located throughout England and provide the highest standards in CPD and tailored local support. Our professional development programme reflects current issues in science education and can be mapped to national standards. A range of delivery models are available including face-to-face sessions of varying length alongside online support. In addition all our courses can be requested as a bespoke offer for your school or network. You will explore a range of strategies to audit and lead science in your school, understand your role more fully and be able to identify and promote effective primary science thus raising attainment in this core subject. 7 Primary Programme Assessment in the new primary science curriculum a world without levels RP102 Evidence shows that effective Assessment for Learning (AfL) leads to raised attainment. Now that formal recording of levels has been removed, you need to be secure in your understanding of how to make judgements about children s achievements and progress. Throughout the course we will identify how you can integrate and embed assessment practices into your science teaching to move their learning forward. Impact price: 64 Working scientifically in the new primary curriculum RP107 Working scientifically is key in primary science. Effective teaching of scientific enquiry is central to developing children s ideas, skills, knowledge and understanding. You will be able to implement strategies for planning, resourcing and delivering a range of types of enquiry in order to improve children s outcomes. Impact price: 64 I have learnt how to improve my own teaching of the subject, as well as increasing my subject knowledge and this has led to an increased ability to support other staff members. 8 National Science Learning Network Teaching key areas of primary science KS1- KS2 RP112 This course focuses on the big ideas in primary science, which will help you make a difference to children s learning by identifying and challenging misconceptions. Reinforcing your own subject knowledge and learning about the new topics and ideas across the primary age range will give you greater understanding in order to support children and to plan a meaningful curriculum. 9 Primary Programme Leading effective professional development in science RP204 Learn the skills needed to become a professional development leader, support your career development and increase your school s capacity to offer support to other schools. Take the chance to network with and assist your peers to explore effective ways to develop and share engaging content. Impact price: 64 Leading action research in science education RP209 You will be given a tool for improving your pedagogy and practice. Learn how to systematically describe and measure the impact of your teaching by developing, conducting and evaluating a small-scale project. Gain further classroom enquiry skills to help you review and reflect on personal and professional practice to the benefit of your students. 12 National Science Learning Network The National Science Learning Centre The National Science Learning Network comprises of the Science Learning Partnerships supporting CPD locally throughout England and the National Science Learning Centre in York. The National Science Learning Centre is able to offer teachers and teaching assistants residential CPD experiences in addition to an extensive range of professional development that anticipates teachers needs and finding new ways to meet them. The National Science Learning Centre offers: w in-depth sustained residential CPD to inspire STEM educators w CPD lead by world-class experts in STEM education w tailored use of teaching resources from the National STEM Centre w generous Project ENTHUSE financial bursaries w onsite inclusive business class accommodation and catering The CPD has not only proven impact, it is also very affordable. Generous funding through Project ENTHUSE means your school can benefit from the ENTHUSE Award financial bursaries towards the cost of courses. 13 Primary Programme The National STEM Centre Free to use, the National STEM Centre, hosts the UK s largest open collection of STEM teaching and learning resources and collections to inspire teachers and lecturers from early years to post-16. Housing over 10,000 quality assured teaching resources the National STEM Centre elibrary is the place for curriculum linked resources including film clips, lesson plans, activity ideas, worksheets and interactive games along with dedicated online communities and planning tools to support you in teaching STEM. The National STEM Centre subject specialists make it easy for you to access resources for specific topics and areas of interest, by creating tailored resource packages that will support you in delivering the latest curriculum. All of which are free to access and download. 14 National Science Learning Network Support science across the network ESERO-UK Tim Peake Primary Project Join the ESERO-UK Tim Peake Primary Project to connect your school with British astronaut Tim Peake s mission to the International Space Station (ISS). In December 2015 the European Space Agency (ESA) are sending their astronaut, Tim Peake, to the ISS for an exciting six month mission. ESERO-UK, the UK Space Education Office, have created an exciting project for UK primary schools to get involved. The free to take part ESERO-UK Tim Peake Primary Project will use space to increase the engagement of primary school children with science, numeracy and literacy and aims to increase: w enjoyment and engagement in all lessons using the context of space w confidence in learning science and working scientifically w knowledge of career opportunities available to pupils who study science and maths subjects w teacher confidence in teaching space topics To find out more and apply to for your school visit: Science Teacher and Support Staff Recognition Scheme Recognising the impact of professional development. Our teacher and support staff recognition scheme allows you to demonstrate your commitment to professional learning and the impact it has on pupils, colleagues and the wider profession. In a world of accountability and performance related pay progression, it provides evidence against the Teacher Professional Standards. The Teacher and Support Staff Recognition Scheme is FREE to enter and you may win an ENTHUSE Celebration Award for your work and be invited to the ENTHUSE Celebration Awards in London. 15 Primary Programme Rolls-Royce Science Prize This annual awards programme helps teachers implement science teaching ideas in their school. The Prize recognises and rewards excellence in science teaching across the full spectrum of teaching, from special education needs to high ability pupils. It also promotes innovative and sustainable strategies for teaching science which addresses a specific need and at the same time contributes to teachers professional development.
