Mode of Study The programme is offered in the following modes of study: Full-time: Part-time: Over a period of 3 years Over a period of 5 years, maximum 8 years 15. Introduction and Special Features 15-a Introduction The Business Management programme and related specialist awards offers students the opportunity to understand, analyse and interpret business activity and decision making in its social and economic contexts. The programme combines a comprehensive grounding in key aspects of business management with opportunities for students to enhance their career prospects through specialisation in a range of areas. The programme currently has a mixture of full-time home students, international students and part-time students. This offers opportunities for valuable exposure to different expectations, interpretations and values which are typical in modern business environments. The programme can be started in either September or January. The programme consists of three distinct phases. In phase 1 (year 1 for full time students, normally year 1 and 2 for part time students), all participants take similar modules. This offers flexibility as there is the opportunity to change the award at the end of the year. The only exception to this is in Accountancy and Business Management. In phase 2 (year 2 for full time students and normally years 3 and 4 for part time students) participants can opt to continue on the generic Business Management programme or choose to specialise and follow a named award. Students can also choose to study abroad for all or part of the year gaining valuable international business insights and additional language skills. In phase 3 participants develop their research skills by completing either a Dissertation or Business Research Study. The programme is designed to embed employability and professional skills at all levels and requires students to develop a means to record continuous evidence of professional learning. The link between learning activities and a critically reflective approach to thinking about organisations, leadership and management helps to ensure that learning is strongly employment focussed throughout the programme. As well as delivery at York St John University, the programme is designed to be delivered off-site under the management of the Business School and delivered by the partner institution, following, where appropriate, training by the Business School teaching staff. Alternatively such training can be delivered by Business School teaching staff with support being provided by suitably qualified Associate Tutors at the partner organisation. 2

3 15-b Special features of the programme Individually named pathways providing unique awards in specific business orientated disciplines. Flexibility to enable students to make further choices within the framework of named awards. Flexibility to transfer between awards up to the end of level 1. A wide module choice for most awards. Opportunities to undertake a work placement and reflect on the experience. Systematic development of employability skills which form part of the core curriculum at Levels 1 and 2 preparing students for the world of business. Opportunity to study abroad with partner institutions in a range of countries including France, Spain, Japan, USA and Australia. Excellent personal and academic support. Each student is allocated an academic tutor to support them throughout the programme. The opportunity to learn a new language or develop existing language abilities at each level. Modules on the accounting award have been aligned with the requirements of 3 papers for the ACCA. The Business School integrates Microsoft Office skills development into some modules in order that students have the opportunity to qualify as a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS). The programme can also be delivered off-site. 16. 5 Students who gain the award specified will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes: Academic Excellence The ability to acquire and organise information mostly from recommended sources associated with Business Management, and an ability to understand key theories and principles at a basic level within the context of that area of study. The capability to begin to organise, synthesise and offer evaluation of the structures regarding the relationship between the knowledge and principles of the subject area. An ability to make sound and appropriate judgements in accordance with basic theories and concepts. Critical Thinking and Effective Communication An ability to present, analyse and interpret simple situations and problems in accordance with basic theories and concepts of Business Management. An ability to evaluate the effectiveness of basic approaches to problem solving related to Business Management. The application and communication of theory and principles to straight forward and relatively unambiguous situations and problems. Learning and Personal Development A basic competence in using IT skills, the ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to organise and manage their own learning; working with others and the ability to apply a range of study and research skills for this level of study in writing. Active Citizenship Qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring the exercise of some personal responsibility. Having awareness of the different stakeholders of wider society, including their needs and expectation. 18-1b Level 1 Programme Structure and Content Welcome Week/Induction: The programme will include an induction period beginning with a Welcome Week prior to the start of teaching. During the welcome week students will receive general University-based induction material including tours of the campus, information about the library, Student Union discussions, as well as programme specific material, such as receipt of student programme handbooks, explanation of module diets and a synopses of modules to be studied, timetable information, and information on the library. Induction will provide students with a programme overview, team building activities and orientation events. York St John Business School make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to assist in the student s engagement, support and his/her integration into the University and student life. All level 1 students have access to a Level 1 information site which is used as an information and guidance repository for students. All full time and part time students attend welcome week which runs twice in the year, once in September and once in January in order to ensure that both intakes of students receive an equivalent experience. 5

6 All students (except Accountancy students) who join the programme, including those joining a specific named award, take a similar pathway through the first year. This offers flexibility and choice of study to the students entering the programme at level one with the opportunity to change programme speciality at the end year one, alternatively, they can choose the generic route through the programme. Four of the compulsory modules are designed to give students a good grounding in both the key theoretical areas of Business Management and in the various specialist pathways. The fifth area is a key skills module covering areas of information technology and study skills. The elective/option modules allow students to either gain an introduction to the IT or Tourism specialisms, alternatively they can broaden their skills by taking a foreign language. Module Choices: Students who come into the programme, even those joining a specific named award, take a similar pathway through the first year and complete a total of six modules. Four of the modules are designed to give students grounding in both the key theoretical areas of Business Management and the specialisms. The fifth is a key skills module which covers areas of information technology and study skills. The elective/option modules allow students to either gain an introduction to the IT or Tourism specialisms, or broaden their skills by taking a foreign language. Level 1 students study six modules in total accumulating to 120 credits. Examples include Organisations, Competition & Environment, ICT & Study Skills, Organisational Behaviour, Economics and Finance, Marketing and Operations Management and one option module. In addition to these students may also choose to take the Microsoft Office Specialist professional qualification. At the end of Level 1 students can either remain on the generic programme or choose to specialise and follow a named award. The only exception to this is in Accountancy and Business Management where students follow a specific route which ensures compliance with the requirements of professional accrediting body. As the ICT and Study Skills module is a first semester module, students joining the programme in Semester Two will be deemed to have missed a module which is vital in the building block process. Semester Two entrants will, therefore, undertake additional (compulsory) sessions in order to support their learning and develop the underpinning study skills deemed necessary for completion of their current modules (e.g. referencing). As the ICT element which consists predominantly of the use of spread sheet software and supports progression onto Level 2 and the research methods modules, the students will not be disadvantaged. No assessment will be undertaken regarding the development of study skills, at this stage, as this will be undertaken within the module when studied in semester two. The majority of students entering the programme at semester two, will be expected to choose an option prior to commencing the programme. Students starting in semester two will be provided with the same information to that received by students starting in Semester One. Semester Two starters will also have the opportunity to discuss their choice of options with the level 1 tutor or Head of Programme prior to commencing the programme. Although we highlight this to level 1, those students with direct entry at level 2 with a Semester Two start, who also need to choose options, will also be guided by the same principles as outlined. One of the underlying principles in Semester Two entrance is the expertise already held by the York St John Business School in supporting and integrating Semester Two entrants into the programme. York St John Business School already has an established induction process which is designed to engage, support and integrate Semester Two starters into the programme. This process includes the use of some initial session time, in the early weeks of the modules, to help students integrate into the groups, the use of group work and group research activities in the delivery process, and the use of peer mentors where practicable. 6

Students who have studied Database Systems for the Web module may choose to take the Microsoft Office Specialist professional qualification in Access. Study abroad: York St John University is committed in its internationalisation strategy by providing opportunities for students participating in international exchange programmes, as one of the key elements of the University s aim in internationalising the curriculum. These opportunities are offered under the terms of the European Erasmus scheme whilst study abroad programmes are organised with partner institutions outside the EU. Students who achieve sufficiently high standards in their work at the discretion of the Head of Programme may therefore be permitted to take part of their degree programme abroad. This experience is acknowledged in the allocation of credits towards the degree which corresponds with the credits that would have been awarded had they continued their studies at York St John University. This is often in the form of a semester or year spent abroad at a partner exchange institution. These exchanges are administered by YSJ International. Study abroad student experiences: A specific new module 2BM200 Reflective Journal has been designed to ensure that students who study abroad, either by following the Business Management and Language route or those who spend a year abroad on Erasmus exchanges have a similar experience to those students who remain in the UK.
