1 Georgetown East Elementary "One Team, One Purpose" October 2017 The school year is well underway and at this point all of our students have gotten into the routines and procedures that their teachers have implemented. If you haven't done so please make sure that your student(s) have gotten into the routine of going to bed early enough to get a great nights sleep and waking up early enough to get to school on time. Thank You to all of you who attended Back to School Night on September 19th. Please remember that we love having parents and guardians visit and see the great things that are happening at Georgetown East. We also love having our parents and guardians to volunteer as well. Our students/your children enjoy seeing their loved ones in the building and it is truly appreciated to the staff. Please contact Mrs. Sherri Arnold our volunteer coordinator if you would like to become a volunteer at GEES. Our commitment to student achievement and strong classroom instruction will continue just as it has been over the years. We are also continuing our quest to ensure that every student is successful socially and behaviorally. Each student reaching academic and behavior success is a job that will not only require the hard work our school staff but also the hard work, love and care from our parents and guardians. We look forward to our partnership with our parents and guardians as we work on eliminating all achievement gaps and factors that contribute to achievement gaps. Of course we will continue to do everything possible to keep everyone safe and secure and remove any barriers that prevent students, staff members and our school community members from feeling safe while they are in the school and on school property. Dr. Martino and I would like to share with you how much we appreciate our school community and all that our parents and guardians do for the students of GEES! Sincerely, Mr. Dillard & Dr. Martino

2 Page 2 New Information? When you move or change your phone numbers please let the school office know as soon as possible. It is very important that we have up to date information in case of an emergency. If you move, you need proof of residency updated. Any questions please contact Deanna Lechowicz and let her Custody Papers Please be clearly aware that unless legal papers are on file in our office granting custody rights to a certain parent, we cannot deny a parent from signing their child out of school. If child custody is an issue in your family, please make certain that up-to-date custody papers are on file in your child s folder. Fall Weather is Here.. This is a friendly reminder to send your student with a jacket or a coat, Please keep working with the younger students to learn to independently zip and button. Perhaps you might stuff a pair of gloves or mittens into their pockets for when they go out to recess. We want our students to stay warm and have fun at recess! Speaking of the playground, we would like to remind parents of the hidden dangers that strings in hoods and jackets can create. Please check your child s clothing and be sure there are no strings or other hidden hazards. Thank you for helping us keep your children safe and warm. To all Parents and Guardians of Georgetown East students: Georgetown East Elementary Attendance Policy Did you know that Anne Arundel County Public Schools Policy states that when a student is absent you must send in a written note indicating the reason for the absence? Telephone calls, messages and of course no contact at all with the school will result in the absence being recorded as UNEX- CUSED! I have attached a form that might make it easy for you to remember to send us a note. Please feel free to make more copies if you would like. If you ever have a question about whether your child s medical condition can be managed by the school, feel free to contact, School Nurse If you have other concerns that are that are preventing your child from coming to school, please contact Jennifer Gross Guidance Counselor at

6 Page 6 ECI Happy Fall, Families! Please send a family photo in with your child if you have not done so already. We have enjoyed our unit on At School and will begin our next unit on Family and Me in the upcoming weeks. We will continue to identify colors and letters and match pictures of vocabulary words. In math, we will make sets of 2, identify numerals 1-5, and sort big and little fall items. During Science, we will discuss the changes in Fall and expand our weather vocabulary. Families are encouraged to walk around the community and discuss fall changes with your student! Parents, if you have not already, please send in 2 changes of clothes and your child's $30 annual snack fee. Pre-K We would like to welcome our students to the beginning of their educational journey! We began this year with a unit entitled, All About Me! We have been learning about what makes each of us unique. We are also introducing your child to the Letter People Puppets. Each puppet represents a letter of the alphabet. These Letter People will help the students not only identify the letter, but also the sound it produces. In math in addition to counting, we will be discussing shapes, sorting and patterns. Our students are doing an awesome job adjusting to the routines of pre-k! In order to help your child, please dress him or her in clothes they are able to fasten and unfasten by themselves in order to use the restroom. Also, if you have not already done so, please send in an extra clean uniform in case your child has an accident or spills on themselves. We look forward to seeing your child grow in many ways throughout the coming school year! 6

8 Page 8 Hello First Grade Families! The first graders got off to a great start of the school year! *Through our caring community time each morning, we have gotten to know each other and establish ourselves as a community of learners. *In Science, we have been excited to watch our caterpillars as they transform into butterflies. This month we will learn about the seasons and what makes each one special, including the holidays. *We will continue to work on addition and subtraction facts within 20 in Math. We have been working on being fluent in our facts: such as doubles, and making tens. We will learn a variety of strategies for addition and subtraction, such as using manipulatives and number lines. Extra practice at home is always helpful! We will also begin working on problem solving. *Students have begun working in small groups for reading instruction. They are learning and practicing strategies: such as looking at the picture, and getting their mouth ready to read unfamiliar words. We make predictions and think about the story as we read. We identify the characters, setting, problem and solution to help us understand what we read. We are learning the difference between fiction and nonfiction texts. Students are learning to identify the main topic and key details of nonfiction texts. * We are writing small moment stories. We are learning the mechanics of writing, and how to add details to make our stories interesting. We have been hard at work in first grade! Second Grade In the Second grade has a wonderful first month of school! We have learned rules and routines and we are working hard to follow them. Please remember to check back packs and folders daily. Students should be reading daily and returning Math homework that comes home on Monday by Friday. Second grade is willing to accept any donations of paper towels and Clorox wipes. This helps us when we are cleaning up from having breakfast in the room daily. Language Arts During reading, we will continue to build our reading capacity. We will work on reading strategies and comprehension skills. We will also be assessing each student on their reading level. When reading with your child at home, be sure to ask your child to retell the story, identify the character and setting and how the character handled any problems or challenges. In writing, we are writing personal narratives. We will focus on small moments while learning about elaboration, craft, structure and conventions. Math Happenings In this unit students will build on previously learned strategies for adding and subtracting within 20. They will gradually work their way up to adding and subtracting larger values within 100. Students will focus on using and understanding place value in order to support them in problem solving as they add and subtract two digit numbers involving regrouping. Students will be using a variety of materials to build numbers (compose) and break them apart (decompose) while looking for patterns between two-digit numbers. Students will apply their understanding of place value to determine which strategy can be used most efficiently. In this unit, students will also extend their knowledge of addition or subtraction to solve problems with unknown addends. Students learn to compare known quantities by using their knowledge of addition and subtraction operations to find an unknown value. Please note that the use of the standard algorithm for multi-digit addition and subtraction is not introduced in second grade. The standard algorithm is introduced later in fourth grade building off of their understanding of place value. 8
