The focus is on understanding the techniques of statistical inference (confidence intervals and hypothesis testing) and interpreting results as found in articles and reports. It emphasizes the inherent uncertainty when decisions are made on the basis of sample data. Includes descriptive statistics, basic probability theory, sampling distributions and the Central Limit Theorem; the binomial, normal, Student t, chi-square, and F distributions; and techniques of 1- and 2-sample tests, linear regression, correlation, an introduction to analysis of variance and selected nonparametric procedures. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra, with a grade of C or better, or Intermediate Algebra Parts 1, and 2, with a grade of C or better in both parts, or appropriate placement score. This is an accelerated course. We will be covering a lot of material in a short amount of time. You should plan to spend about 2 to 4 hours per day, 5 days per week, on this class. It is better to spend the time each day than to cram it all in before the deadline. This is an online course. This course requires you to use a computer extensively. This course may not be right for you if you do not have hours each week to complete the course work between October 31 and December 23; you do not like working with computers, the Internet, or technology; or you do not have unlimited, high-speed access to the Internet. 2 Basic Statistics Fall 2011 Syllabus Page 2 of 7 Getting Started Step 1: Buy the textbook as well as access to the MyMathLab course website. The required textbook is Essentials of Statistics, 4th edition, by M. Triola, published by Pearson, The textbook plus MyMathLab access can be purchased as a package. There are two options: MyMathLab access (includes e-book) You can get free access for 17 days, but after that you must pay or lose access. Price: $80 MyMathLab access + paper textbook ISBN: Madison College Bookstore, or Price: $97.73 Step 2: Register on the MyMathLab course website. Location: Course ID: cunningham24484 Step 3: Do the first homework assignment. The first assignment is a tutorial on how to use the MyMathLab website to do your homework, quizzes, and tests. Do this assignment before the first day of class (October 31) if you can. Step 4: Obtain a graphing calculator and/or STATDISK software. It is possible to do all of the assignments without these aids, but some kind of statistical software will save you a lot of time. The TI-83 or TI-84 is the preferred graphing calculator. If you are not taking other math classes, you might prefer to use STATDISK (free software). See the links on the MyMathLab course website for more information. Step 5: View the weekly checklist, and get going! The weekly checklist will give you guidelines for what sections to READ, which videos to WATCH, and which assignments to DO each day. Every week, your assignments will be due on Sunday night at 11:59pm, except the final deadline will be Friday 12/23/11. See the schedule below for details. Step 6: Stay in touch. Please check your Madison College regularly so that you don t miss important announcements. If you me, I will answer within one business day (and often within a few minutes or hours). 3 Basic Statistics Fall 2011 Syllabus Page 3 of 7 Policies for Homework and Review Quizzes All work will be completed on the MyMathLab course website. Before the due dates (Sunday nights at 11:59pm), you can do each problem repeatedly until you get it correct for full credit. There will be a 10% penalty per day for late homework. You must complete at least 50% of the homework assignments for each unit before you can take the unit test. The review quizzes must be completed by the deadlines. Policies for Tests and Final You will take your tests and final exam on the MyMathLab course website. You must finish the tests by the due dates (Sunday nights at 11:59pm) they will be closed afterwards. The tests are open book, open notes, but you must do them on your own with no help from other people. The tests will be timed and you must finish them after you start them. The time limit for each test is 2 hours. Note that MyMathLab does not give partial credit, so you should read the instructions carefully for each question before you enter your answer. However, before the due dates, you may take each unit test twice and average your scores. This re-take option does not apply to the final. Discussion Board You will receive 1 point of extra credit each time you post a thoughtful question or comment on the Discussion Board on our MyMathLab course website. You can earn a maximum of 20 extra credit points (2% of your grade). I will monitor the Discussion Board and answer questions, but you may also be able to help each other.
