4 Introduction Congratulations! You are on your way to putting laughter and learning together in the hands of YOUR child. If you have opened this book, you must be considering lapbooking with your student(s). If you have never seen a completed lapbook before, you are probably wondering, What is a lapbook? In fact, if we compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about lapbooking, What is a lapbook? would be at the top of that list. The answer to that question, along with many others, can be found in this book. Once you have figured out what a lapbook is, your next question will probably be, How do I find graphic organizers to make a lapbook? Look no further! This book is your answer! In it, you will find over 100 templates to help you and your child create quick and easy lapbooks. There is no need to spend hours trying to find just the right mini book or art frame for your child s next lapbook- it s all right here! Whether you are a veteran lapbooker or have never tried one before, this book will help make you and your student s lapbooking experience and fun and rewarding one. 4 Page
5 WHAT IS A LAPBOOK? A Lapbook is a: Collection of paper booklets, miniature information organizers and some file folders Unit Study Hands-on tool Graphic Organizer Portfolio Scrapbook WHAT SUPPLIES DO I NEED TO START LAPBOOKING WITH MY STUDENT? Basic supplies needed include: File folders Cardstock Paper in variety of colors and weights Crayons, pencils, markers, paints Adhesive Stapler and staples Paper punch Optional items including stickers, magazine clippings, scrapbook paper, and other embellishments 5 Page
6 I HAVE ALL MY SUPPLIES TOGETHER, WHAT IS NEXT? Choose a topic to study Write down at least 10 key concepts that you want your student to learn about a particular topic Do your research! Create mini graphic organizers Work with your student to create a lapbook HOW DO I FIND INFORMATION AND ACTIVITIES TO COMPLETE A LAPBOOK? Library Internet Encyclopedias HOW DOES MY STUDENT COMPLETE A LAPBOOK? 1. Complete each activity and record information learned in a mini graphic organizer 2. Attach graphic organizers to file folder lapbook 6 Page
7 Creating a Lapbook Base Basic Lapbook Base Open a file folder and lay it flat. Fold both right and left edges toward the center so they meet and close like a pair of shutters. Crease firmly. Base with Single or Double Extensions Complete the basic lapbook base. Open base and lay flat. Cut another folder in half or use a sheet of cardstock for the extension. Lay the extension in the center of folder at either the top or bottom. (You may add two extensions if need be; one at the top and one at the bottom). Attach to base with clear packing tape. Single Extension Double Extension Double Folder Base Make two base folders. Open them and lay them side by side with outer flaps pointing straight up, not flat. Where the two flaps meet glue them together. Fold center flap to one side, fold both shutters in and close folders like a book. 7 Page
8 WHAT DO I USE A LAPBOOK FOR OR HOW DO I INCORPORATE LAPBOOKS INTO OUR CURRENT CURRICULUM? Use for every subject including Bible study, Math, Reading, Grammar, History, Geography, Science, Music, Art, and more! Pull the concepts from your existing curriculum and put them into your lapbook! Use as a stand-alone unit study or as a supplement to a current curriculum Toss out the worksheets and add learned knowledge to a lapbook! Make a giant lapbook for a science fair, scout or 4H project! WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LAPBOOKING? Lapbooks can be used by all ages and skill levels Lapbooks improve retention Lapbooks reinforce topics of study Lapbooks motivate reluctant readers and writers Lapbooks make great summaries and review tools Lapbooks are easy to store Lapbooks become instant portfolios Lapbooks incorporate hands-on learning Lapbooks are projects that fit in file folder! 8 Page
9 The Templates NOTE: On the following pages some templates are two to a page. This is to save on paper waste. If two templates aren t needed now, store one away for future use. Storage is easy! Cut a small piece off the corner of a zip top baggie and store templates in the baggie. The baggie will lay flat without retaining air. Accordion Books Fold Instructions: Fold one page back, one page forward and so on. Attach extra pages by gluing them to the tab at the end of each accordion. If you have too many pages just cut away the extras. Uses for Accordion Books: Timelines Sequence in a story Characters Major products for a country (geography study) Types of animals in a species People involved in an event (signers of the Declaration, key players in a war/battle, etc.) Types of machines to do a type of job Works of art or compositions accredited to an artist or composer Steps in a process 9 Page
