Participants will learn how to scaffold support to ensure students create clear summaries of informational texts that will help them answer test questions more successfully. In this session, teachers will create centers to use in their classrooms, match the centers to specific reading and writing student expectations, and discuss how to implement and use these centers successfully with secondary students.
10 Title Writing for College Entrance Exams Date of Description 07/21/17 As of January 2016, the SAT changed its format and scoring method. The purpose of this session is to provide teachers with the necessary information regarding those changes and to provide a format for SAT Prep, which is free for your students, as well as discuss the implications on classroom instruction. What are the differences in writing for SAT, ACT, and TSI? How does college entrance exam writing match up with our TEKS? Texas Adolescent Literacy Academy (TALA) Focus on Writing 07/31/17 to 04/01/17 In this two-day workshop, participants will explore instructional approaches designed to assist students as they become more analytical and purposeful writers. Training will include the following: reading as a writer; incorporating techniques learned from reading into one's own writing; developing thinking skills through writing; and teaching written conventions. Participants will have opportunities for handson practice of reading and writing strategies.

She will include a format for PSAT/SAT Prep which is free for students, and help participants examine, analyze, and understand their school's data and trends Making Inferences & Predictions & Recognizing Relevant Text Evidence 10/09/17 Does your data indicate that many of your students struggle to make inferences while reading? Making inferences, predictions, and recognizing relevant text evidence is a complex strategy necessary for effective reading comprehension. Learn a routine for explicitly teaching students to make inferences and predictions using a powerful scaffold that supports students as they learn the difference between implicit and explicit text information and evidence.

Participants will leave with strategies to use in the classroom to infuse grammar instruction authentically into the writer's workshop Reading with Purpose: Why are we reading this, Miss? 10/30/17 Do your students read just to get it done? How many times have you been asked, "Why are we reading this?" A question that is often followed the statement, "I am never going to use this!" Research shows that having a purpose for reading will drastically improve comprehension and motivation. Let's establish a routine that will help students read purposefully and intentionally, building a foundation for higher learning.
21 Title Impressing the Reader with My Writing in the First Paragraph Using Small Groups in the Classroom Date of Description 11/03/17 Do your students write blah sounding introductions? When the writer thrills, electrifies, or touches the reader in the first paragraph, the overall impression of a student's ability to write increases. Let's look at how other writer's and students do this so bring along a couple of great student examples. Also bring sample introductory paragraphs to rework using strategies presented in the session so that the reader is entranced and dazzled at the very beginning. 11/10/17 Do you want to use small group instruction and small group activities in your classroom but need a little advice on getting started?
