3 Questions that you and your child may have? Which Subject combination should I choose? What subjects should I offer to get me closer to my aspiration? Will I be able to cope with my new subjects? What is my aspiration?

4 3 Essential Questions to ask your child Who am I? Where am I going? How do I get there?

5 Essential Question 1: Who am I? Guide your child to raise his/her awareness of self. Journey with his/her to reflect and answer the question, Who am I? Handhold him/her to discover their strengths, interests and aptitude Discover your interest Discover your Aptitude Discover your strengths

6 Discover your Strengths Discover Who You Are Everyone has a set of unique attributes. Embark on a journey of self-discovery Identify and develop your interests, abilities, and passion; The more you know about what you value, what you are interested in, and what you are good at, the more likely you will be able to make good choices in your education and career explorations.

9 Journey of Self-Discovery What are the subjects your child enjoys or is good at? If your child enjoys a subject, he/she is likely to do well in it because being interested in something engages and motivates them. Your child is more likely to enjoy learning the subject if his/her strengths is aligned with the expectations of the subject.

10 Essential Question 2: Where am I going? Your child may have an aspiring career pathway in mind or he/she may gradually discover what they enjoy doing. Guide him/her to reflect and answer the question: Where will his/her subject combination allow him/her to go after secondary school? How will offering these subjects bring him/her closer to his/her aspirations? 15 Early Admission Exercise (EAE) Allows you to apply and receive a conditional offer for admission to ITE courses based on your Aptitude Strength Interest Before taking your GCE N Level exams

16 Early Admission Exercise (EAE) 1. It s for those who have aptitudes and interests in specific fields of study. Focus on course-specific aptitudes and interests But, non-course-specific achievements, e.g. sports, performing arts, leadership, are also considered 2. You ll be assessed through different modes. E.g. interviews, aptitude tests, showcasing your portfolio, 3. All this will take place before your N-Level exams 4. You ll still have to meet the minimum entry requirements. 5. But you won t have to compete for admission to ITE strictly on the basis of how well you do academically compared to everyone else

19 Essential Question 3: How do I get there? Be Proactive: Speak to someone who knows about the subject or courses. Find out more through OPEN HOUSE, websites, newspapers etc Do Research: Help your child understand the various educational pathways and course requirements Have conversation: What can your child do to help himself/herself move closer towards her goal? Discover & Explore: Guide your child to explore his interests and develop his/her strengths

22 Considerations in Offering Out-of-Stream Subjects at Sec 3 Strengths of Student Opportunities for students to nurture their strengths in specific subjects Overall Load for Student - Ability to cope with the overall higher curriculum and assessment loads in upper secondary, hence students must meet the set criteria

23 Criteria to offer out-of-stream subjects at sec 3 School will offer NA-Level Maths and NA-Level English Language to eligible Sec 3NA students if students meet criteria below CRITERIA* NA-Level Maths NA-Level EL Current SBB Students 60% for Sec 2 NA Maths; AND 50% for Sec 2 Overall Results 60% for Sec 2 NA EL; AND 50% for Sec 2 Overall Results Students not in SBB for Subject 70% for Sec 2 NT Maths; AND 50% for Sec 2 Overall Results Not Eligible

25 Possible Subject Options 2019 Subject combinations that are available for the Secondary Three classes differ from year to year. E.g. The subject combination for 3F (2018) may not be the same as 3F (2019) or 3F (2020). Reason - Subject combinations for Sec 3 classes in 2019 are partly dependent on the preference and ability of the students (for elective subject) as well as the resources available (e.g. availability of labs, workshops, teachers, etc.)

26 Guiding Principles for Subject Allocation Offering our students a broad based subject combination will provide them with a wide range of choices for post secondary education. Subjects are allocated based on Merit (Overall academic performance for Sec 2 + Meets specific subject requirements) Student s choice, ability and interest Availability of resources (e.g. teachers, workshop space)
