1 MAC 1140 PRECALCULUS ALGEBRA SPRING 2013 (MW 6:25, 7:50 PM) Instructor: Margarita Leon address: Office hours: Mondays, Wednesdays 9:05-10:05 pm, by appointment Phone number (leave voice message, no texts please) Objectives: Stress the aspects of algebra that are important for the calculus sequence. Lays emphasis on graphs in the study of functions and algebraic relations. Covers polynomials; rational functions; logarithmic, exponential, and piecewise defined functions; inequalities; conic sections; determinants; sequences and series; mathematical induction; binomial theorem. Learning outcomes: Students will study algebraic topics in preparation for the study of Calculus. Students will develop an understanding of advanced algebraic techniques and procedures and enhance their logical reasoning skills including both inductive and deductive logic. They will gain a better understanding of the techniques of problem solving including clearly defining the problem, using a systematic approach and using symbolic representation to solve practical, real world problems. The skills developed in this course will prepare the students for the study of calculus and other mathematical courses requiring algebraic procedures. Topics: 0-Review: Functions and Graphs (including Library of Functions-Piecewise Functions). Emphasize on Graphing Functions. Graphing by Transformations. Review Composite and Inverse Function. 1-Polynomial and Rational Functions a) Polynomial Functions Review factoring b) Dividing Polynomials-Synthetic Division c) Real Zeros of a Polynomial d) Rational Functions e) Polynomial and Rational Inequalities 2- Exponential and Logarithmic Functions a) Exponential Function b) Logarithmic Function c) Properties of the Logarithms d) Exponential and Logarithmic Equations 3- Conic Sections a) The Parabola b) The Ellipse c) The Hyperbola 4- System of Equations a) Systems of Linear Equations in Three Variables b) Determinants and Cramer s Rule c) Systems of non-linear equations 4- Sequences-Induction Binomial Theorem a) Sequences and Series b) Arithmetic Sequences c) Geometric Sequences and Series d) Mathematical Induction e) The Binomial Theorem Textbook: Algebra and Trigonometry, 9 th Edition, by Sullivan. Prerequisites: MAC 1105 with a C or better or appropriate score in placement test. Examinations: There will be three in-class paper and pencil exams and a comprehensive departmental final exam (see the schedule). Moreover, you will have weekly online homework and online quizzes assigned in MyLabsPlus. In addition there will be five or six graded graphing assignments that need to be turned in. The due dates as well as the assignments will be given in class. Online Assignments: To access online assignments you must purchase an access code for MyLabsPlus. You can purchase it together with the textbook at FIU bookstore, or as standalone item either at the bookstore or at (The instructions on

2 how to purchase a code and access the program are attached). You will be automatically registered with your FIU as soon as you purchase your access code and enter it. -First assignment is due on January 13 th, so buy the access code as soon as possible. -All online assignments have a due date. Late submissions will not be accepted under any circumstances, so plan accordingly - Online problems are algorithmic iterations of textbook exercises. - Homework assignments can be attempted an infinite number of times, but must be completed within assigned period of time. With the exception of Homework 1 and 14 all are due on Sundays at 11:59pm. Quizzes (except for quiz 1 and 14) are due on Tuesdays at 11:59pm. There is one quiz per week. Quiz is associated with the homework assigned for that week. A quiz can be taken three times and the highest score is registered. All quizzes are due on Tuesdays at 11:59pm. -To take a quiz, you must score at least 70% on the associated homework. If you don t receive required 70% on the prerequisite homework, you will not be able to take the associated quiz and consequently, you will receive 0% on that quiz - At the end of the semester, the homework assignment with lowest grade and the quiz with the lowest grade will be dropped. The deadlines will not be extended under any circumstances. All assignments are due at midnight on the due day. Do not wait till the last moment to complete the assignments since you don t know what problems you might encounter along the way. Grading policy: To get a full credit for a problem on a test you must show your work. An answer alone, even correct, will get no credit. Please note that if you decide to skip online assignments, you will have to score at least 88% on each test to receive a passing grade (C). Your final grade will be assigned according to the following scale. A: B +: C+: D +: A- : B: C: D : B-: C-: F: 0-54 Your grade will be calculated as follows: (Option II is not available as a choice, only in the case of an accident or extreme documented illness.) If you miss a test due to illness or other emergency and provide documentation supporting your claim, your final exam will count in place of the missed test. Option II will be used if a student misses a test for a justifiable and documentable reason (illness, accident, etc.). If you miss a test without a valid excuse, you will receive a 0 on that test and your grade will be computed using Option I. There will be no make-ups for online assignments, but the lowest score on homework assignments and quizzes will be dropped. Attendance Policy: You are expected to attend all classes. It is your responsibility to complete all assignments on time regardless of whether or not you were present in the class. Calculator Policy: Use of graphing calculators is prohibited in this course. The scientific calculator TI- 30XA will be used occasionally. Incomplete Grade Policy: The incomplete grade is given to a student who has substantially completed most of the course work but is unable to finish an exam or other work because of circumstances beyond the student's control. An IN grade cannot be given if it is necessary for the student to repeat the course. An incomplete grade must be made up within two semesters. There is no extension of the two semester deadline. The student must not register again for the course to make up the incomplete. Every incomplete grade must be approved by the Mathematics Department. Drop Date: The last day to drop a course with a DR grade is March 17 th, 2014.

3 Academic Misconduct: Includes (but is not limited to) giving or receiving assistance on a test, quiz, or homework assignment for which such assistance is not permitted, falsifying a document to obtain an excusal from a test, and using unauthorized notes on a test or quiz. A more complete definition of Academic Misconduct is given in the Student Handbook. Penalties for Academic Misconduct range from an F in the course to expulsion from the University. Classroom Etiquette: To create and preserve a classroom atmosphere that optimizes teaching and learning, students are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner that does not disrupt teaching or learning. You are expected to come prepared to the class, be on time and remain in the classroom for the duration of the lecture. Talking, eating, sleeping, checking , using a phone, reading a newspaper, preparing for another class, packing up early is disruptive to others around you and to the instructor. Though classroom participation is always welcomed, questions and comments must be relevant to the topic at hand. If you have a question or comment, raise your hand to be recognized. Electronic devices such as cell phones, ipods, and computers must be turned off during class. Student conduct which disrupts the learning process shall not be tolerated and may lead to disciplinary action and/or removal from class.
