1 Course Title: Third Grade History 3 rd Grade History Course Map 2013 Duration: 1 semester Frequency: Daily Revised June 2013 Text: Heritage Studies 3 Bob Jones University Press Other materials: Maps, Charts, Graphs & Diagrams (Teacher Created Resources); Map Skills Grade 3 &4 (Teacher Created Resources); Map Skills (Instructional Fair, Carson-Dellosa); States and Capitals (Teacher Created Resources); Uncle Josh s Outline Map Book (Geography Matters); History Pockets Moving West (Evan-Moor); Enchanted Learning worksheets and articles (teaching website); trade books; ipad apps; maps, globe Areas to be evaluated: Students will be evaluated after each unit for comprehension and mastery of objectives. Problem solving and critical thinking application activities will be conducted and evaluated as well. Additional activities: Hands on activities to reinforce mapping skills; creating a physical map of the U.S.; travel brochure of one of the fifty states; creating a timeline of westward movement Course objectives: To develop mapping skills, geographical knowledge, knowledge of the location of the fifty United States and key facts about each region; to gain historical knowledge of the United States from the early 1800 s through the beginning of the Civil War; to develop critical thinking skills related to map skills and historical concepts; to develop a Christian World View related to American history and to understand that God is sovereign over all of history. Course explanation: Students will gain a knowledge of map reading and apply that to various types of maps; identify continents and countries; identify regions of the United States and major land forms found in them. Students will also be able to identify the location of the fifty United States; identify landforms specific to the regions; learn key historical facts related to specific states and regions; create a brochure highlighting one of the fifty states and illustrate key landmarks and/or historical points of interest. Students will gain an understanding of the of the United States; specifically the explorations of Lewis & Clark. Students will study and gain an understanding of events leading up to the Civil War; how slavery played an integral part in the war; Abraham Lincoln s role as President and the success of the Emancipation Proclamation. Unit: 1 Map Skills Time frame: Gain an understanding of the various uses for maps Recognize, identify, and compare various types of maps Demonstrate an understanding of the parts of a map ( key, compass rose, scale) Use a compass rose to identify cardinal and intermediate directions on a map Demonstrate understanding of an ability to read and evaluate information on physical, political, historical, and various other types of maps Demonstrate ability to read a grid map Demonstrate knowledge of how to use a globe Identify continents, hemispheres, and poles on a globe Gain an understanding of lines of latitude and longitude and how to identify each on a globe
2 Instructional Methods: Teacher directed instruction; Observation and reteaching of individual students as needed; Students work individually and in pairs to practice and gain understanding and to reinforce concepts; directing hands on activities to reinforce concepts being taught. Activities: Teacher will model concepts for students and students will participate in individual and group work to reinforce those concepts. Students will apply their understanding of maps to create a map of their bedroom at home. Students will work with globes and maps in the classroom to gain understanding of cardinal and intermediate directions. Biblical Integration: God created our world with order and sequence. Other Integration: Art: creating a map using a key classroom activities, scores on worksheets, unit review and test. Unit: 2 Geography of United States Time frame: The student will: Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between city, state, country, and continent Demonstrate knowledge of the seven continents and major oceans in our world Demonstrate familiarity with geographic regions within the United States. Demonstrate knowledge of the names and locations of the 50 states Demonstrate an understanding of landforms relative to each region Demonstrate an understanding of key historical facts relative to each region Create a brochure highlighting one of the fifty states. Instructional Methods: Teacher directed instruction using text book, maps, and globes. Use of additional supplemental materials to reinforce objectives. Observation and re-teaching of individual students as needed; Students work individually and in pairs to practice and gain understanding and to reinforce concepts; directing hands on activities to reinforce concepts being taught Activities: Teacher will model concepts for students and students will participate in individual and group work to reinforce those concepts. Students will create a brochure focused on one of the fifty states. Biblical Integration: God created our world with order and sequence. Other Integration: Writing: Creating brochure on one of the fifty states which includes written information on that state. classroom activities, assessment of state brochure; scores on worksheets, unit review, quizzes, and tests

Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area. W.3.7. Conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic. W.3.8. Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories. Unit: 3 Westward Expansion Time Frame: 8 weeks Gain understanding of the of the United States beginning in 1803 Apply map skills to the study of Lewis and Clark s journey Demonstrate an understanding of Lewis and Clark and the Corp of Discovery s journey west to the Pacific Ocean Demonstrate understanding of the role of missionaries in the Identify trails that were followed by pioneers during the westward expansion Demonstrate an understanding of the difficulties families endured as they traveled west Demonstrate an understanding of the conflict between Native Americans and settlers during the Demonstrate an understanding of the Gold Rush and its impact on Demonstrate an understanding of how the railway system impacted Instructional Methods: Teacher directed instruction using history text and other related articles. Use of ipads to find specified sources on the internet to locate information for Lewis & Clark lapbook. Students work individually and in pairs to practice and gain understanding of concepts. Teacher will
4 direct hands on activities to reinforce concepts being taught. Observation and re-teaching of specific concepts as needed. Activities: Students will read text from their history book and from other resources and demonstrate comprehension of the material through written response. Students will participate in individual and group work to reinforce those concepts being taught. Timeline skills will be taught through various activities; both hands on and through written work. Students will create a lapbook highlighting key aspects of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Biblical Integration: Teach concepts of justice, greed, national sovereignty and ambition from a biblical perspective. classroom activities, scores on worksheets, unit review, quizzes, and tests RI.3.1. Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, RI By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 2 3 text complexity band independently and proficiently. RF.3.4. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. SL.3.1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions Unit: 4 Civil War Era Time Frame: Demonstrate an understanding the events leading up to the Civil War Compare and Contrast the opposing views concerning slavery in the United States Gain an understanding of what the Underground Railroad was and the role Harriet Tubman played in freeing slaves. Demonstrate an understanding of Abraham Lincoln s role as president during the Civil War Demonstrate an understanding of the Emancipation Proclamation Instructional Methods: Teacher directed instruction using history text and additional resources; Whole group and independent reading of text for understanding; Class discussions over concepts surrounding the Civil War and slavery. Students will work individually and in pairs to demonstrate understanding of concepts being taught through written activities. Activities: Teacher will present biographical information on Harriet Tubman and Abraham Lincoln. Students will write a paragraph demonstrating their knowledge of either Harriet Tubman s role in the Underground Railroad or Abraham Lincoln s role in bringing slavery to an end in our country. Students will discuss the effects of slavery on our nation.
