1 Springside P-9 College Homework and Study Policy Goal: At Springside P-9 College, our aim is: to foster lifelong learning and study habits to complement and reinforce classroom learning to provide an opportunity for students to develop responsibility for their own learning Expectations: Springside College recognises that study and homework are two different concepts and should be approached as two very distinct, separate tasks. Homework: is generally regarded as work which has been set by a teacher is designed to COMPLEMENT what is taught in the classroom and reinforces the knowledge has a specific due date Study: is generally regarded as personal learning time, without the specific guidance of a teacher incorporates remembering, revising and preparing in order to ensure understanding of a concept develops self-discipline and organisational skills In accordance with the Department of Education guidelines, there are three main types of homework which meet these expectations; practice exercises, preparatory homework and extension assignments; Practice exercises provide opportunities for students to apply newly gained knowledge; preparatory homework provides opportunities for students to gain background information so they are better prepared for future lessons; extension assignments encourage students to pursue knowledge individually and imaginatively. 2 Implementation: At Springside P-9 College we will work to ensure that: the Homework and Study Policy is implemented and adhered to by staff and students skills including time management and organisation will be explicitly taught throughout all year levels homework is set to support all curriculum areas homework is linked to class learning and not be used as a disciplinary measure all students have homework activities that are achievable homework is assessed by teachers with feedback and support staff contact parents/guardians to discuss homework issues, including offering students assistance with time management and organisation staff and parents work together to assist students in developing responsibility for their homework and study as they progress through the College Early Years Prep to Year 4 Teachers will encourage students to engage in homework as an enjoyable task. Homework will: mainly consist of reading to, with and by parents or older siblings be of one of the types of homework listed earlier and be delivered in an enjoyable way not be set on ends and during the school holidays generally not exceed 30 minutes a day Middle Years Years 5 and 6 Homework and study will: include daily independent reading be of one of the types of homework listed earlier generally range between minutes a day Homework Expectations: P-2 Homework will be set Friday to Friday allowing the flexibility for families to complete tasks over the end if desired 3-6 Homework will be set on a 10 day cycle for example: Monday through to the following Wednesday to allow sufficient time for the homework to be completed. This allows time for Classroom Teachers to correct student s work and provide timely feedback refer to Appendix 1 for homework expectations Middle Years Years 7 to 9 Homework and study will generally range between minutes a day, increasing to minutes a day in Year 10 to Year 12, with up to 6 hours on ends and during peak VCE periods. Homework and study expectations are separated and defined below. Study Expectations: each Year 7-9 domain area has defined the study expectations for the various subject areas (Appendix 2) study may include using graphic organisers, summarising class notes, making flashcards, and reading 2
3 students should set a specific time to study mark a time in your calendar dedicated exclusively to study time just as you would for any other appointment or commitment students should prioritise and plan each evening after consulting their Homework Diary and checking daily school work students should write down what they expect to study and how long it will take (Appendix 3) Homework Expectations: completion of class tasks will be considered separately to set homework tasks - where ample time has been given for the completion of set class work, finishing tasks become the responsibility of the student homework tasks will be set and collected by each domain area once per fortnight, at a maximum - homework tasks do not have to be set each fortnight, however they must not be set during any allocated to another domain tasks will be of one of the types of homework listed earlier homework calendars for each of Years 7, 8 & 9 (Appendix 3) have been designed with the intention of ensuring students are not overwhelmed with homework and study expectations, and will be adhered to by all staff HELPING STUDENTS Parents and carers can help their child/children with their homework and study by: providing their child with a quiet place to study ensuring years 3-9 students keep updated homework/study notes in their diary encouraging a regular daily session to complete homework helping to balance the time spent between homework, study and recreational activities asking how homework, study and class work is progressing, and acknowledging success discussing homework and study in their first language, if is not the main language spoken at home, and linking it to previous experiences, families culture, history and language communicating with your child s teachers about any homework and study concerns encouraging your child to study every day, rather than for the whole day before a test Actions for Incomplete Homework: It is an expectation that students in Year Prep Year 9 complete the required Homework within the set timeframes. Actions will be enforced as per our College Clear Consequences for students who fail to submit set tasks. Evaluation: This policy will be reviewed as part of the colleges review cycle. This policy was last ratified by school council in NOVEMBER

6 APPENDIX 2 Year 7-9 Study Expectations Study should be undertaken each evening when there is no set homework, and should be relevant to the subjects that were attended that day. I.e. Study for Indonesian should occur only on days during which students attended Indonesian classes.
