Didn't get to it 2 It makes students actually do it before class and Worse. Too long. lab wouldn't be as long and dragging. I'm not sure but maybe more take more suggestions/surveys to see what students find helpful Too much in class reading on info we do not need to go into full detail. No pre lab Less time in lab. It was hard to understand the q's. Not print out the graphs: waste of paper somewhat helpful but mostly 3 relevant but annoying 1 confusing Worse, it was very confusing and seemed to require more prior knowledge than other labs. Everything. These labs are long, tedious, and confusing and I don't feel that they have contributed to my learning Allows me to work at my pace(slowly) and I think Style was similar, more confusing perhaps. Pre labs are good ways to prepare for lab. through things. I can always TA questions Prefer less time in lab and more peer work Worse. It was long and less usual things The length! :O outside of lab to work off of Shorter lab; ability to do pre/post lab on my time. Internet more environmentally friendly. This lab was harder and much longer than previous labs. I thought style was pretty good, but found it to be overly dense. Too long. There is no way I could have finished this whole thing in 3 hours or even the experiment portion in Very, very wrong! 3 (blank) 2 Shorter. Style? What style? Too little time to finish it all I like that there are pre and post labs but it's not good to do them during the lab itself Unh, I wouldn't change anything. I would go home. I think all labs should have a pre lab, but the post lab isn't necessary I don't think it is reasonable to have work outside of class (lab) Get it done all at once No, wordings are confusing. Do not involve calculus Way too long! I lose motivation. Would be better to set up like chem labs. Way to long! I would prefer to have more time to practice with the pre lab concepts at home before attempting to use them in lab. Labs are too choppy. Need to be more streamlined. I would make the labs more closely follow the course I liked the other labs better without the post and pre lab work. Page 1/6
This lab was too long! The style was The length. okay Answers can be checked right away for accuracy About the same Nothing. and it's easier to fit into the class schedule b/c it's less time OK 1 I did not enjoy this lab It was exactly the same. Nothing You don't need to be in lab to do the prelab. Better, but it was longer. I felt like I learned more from it. Let the pre and post labs be done outside class. Length I guess. After a few hours I don't really care to learn any more physics. Maybe break it up into smaller and more frequent labs Somewhat helpful, was 3 confused part of the time Because get stuff done all at once and don't have to worry if did it and on time A little bit better because actually understood some of concepts Lab is very boring, nothing is learned. Worse. Too much content in an already Stay to one thought. disjointed class A matter of manipulating 3 It's easier and I constantly need help. Worse. Too Long equations. Make sure that all TAs give good lectures beore lab so that the students have a clue as to what's going on I like leaving class with lab completed. We I like the regular labs much more because Nothing. already have tutorial and lecture it is consolidated hands on learning in a assignmnets/hw so we don't need more. nice condensed period. Having everything done in class means you don't have to wait for people who decided not to do the pre assign I liked the tutorial with the lab. 1 3 Used to this. It makes things complete and all the I liked this lab better because of the way it Hard to say... got us to deduce and see the workings of the formulas Could do it on my own time It's just too hard 3 (blank) 3 Because I like asking questions. It's hard Worse. Nothing Relevant 1 I don't know. Worse, it took too long. I would just do the old style. Page 2/6
I get things done on the computer convenience Yes; more thorough and robust w/ It's good as it is. factor. learning material Online assignments are a bit annoying, and shorter lab period means my Wednesdays aren't as hectic I liked it much more than other labs There weren't a bunch of inane error calculations. Question #3 in prelab should hint at polar coordinates Tiring since lab was long but 1 it was the quickest part of the lab. Less in class is better. Paper: can do work easier than online. Worse. Seemed to be longer and more repetitive Didn't have time to finish 3 I learn better in one sitting Better to finish everything at once I like the other labs better because this one was way too long This was worse b/c of long length. Too much reading. No pre/post lab Prepare better and spread out so info settles in Better. Better written. Longer, for sure. better. Make it shorter and waste less paper by printing labs double sided and printing no graphs. 3 1 But it is a lot of reading 1 But I struggled w/this lab so I 1 didn't learn all I should have. I learn better on my own with no time constraints; I have to write things down to understand them better, so paper is better than online. It probably would have been better if the pre and post labs were done outside of the lab. I think they are a good thing though I felt like I learned nothing. 3 Because I would forget to do the stuff outside of Much much much worse. I thought there Continue to use the other ones. class. was an excessive amount of reading that took away from the purpose of the experiment Keep everything together, no outside work. Yes, no uncertainties! Wraps everything Don't print graphs: wastes paper. up nicely with post lab Save time in lab This one: no uncertainties. Don't print graphs A good way to apply what I 3 Don't like outside responsibilities. Already have a No, I wouldn't like the extra work. learned. lot of homework. Nothing. I like the labs, make them worth a greater % of the grade We will have too much HW. Not really. I spend too much in the lab Shorten the lab. than usual I can finish the lab and also check my understanding within the lab session. Worse. It's time consuming and I can't finish it. Some parts of the lab are just repeating the same thing several times Ran out of time, seems like it 3 I like doing everything while it's fresh in my mind. Worse only because it seemed more The length, it was too much for the period. would have helped to complicated but given more time this summarize. would have related better to my lectures I don't want to do any outside work for the lab components. The style of the lab is worse because it took up way more time, and there were prelabs and postlabs. No prelabs, no postlabs Assuming I would get graded 3 Don't have to worry about forgetting to do I like that it was mathematics based, but I Organize equations more clearly. feedback. homework, forgetting papers. was confused by the end of the first part. Page 3/6
This already is a three hour lab. Having extra work at the beginning and end makes it almost overwhelming. Having all done at once rather than coming back days later is better. Worse, this was an extremely long lab. Too much data taking and interpreting, making it overwhelming. Shorter, more concise labs. Clearer instructions. 2 3 Meh 1 3 That always gives students the option to do them Worse. It's not what I'm used to. The printer. in class or out of class. 2 Tedious 3 Tedious 2 If there are pre and post lab questions I would rather do them online. I didn't like the pre and post lab parts. This was by far my least favorite lab. This lab was too long. If I had actually put full effort into it, it is unlikely I would have finished in 3 hrs. Also vague wording! (blank) Somewhat helpful. 3 Annoying. 1 Less time doing things in class that could be done out of class. Worse, I'd like to just read instead of having an additional assignment. Some of it was pretty annoying and it was very long. I'd put it in the middle. Prelab/postlab should be completed w/hw Staying in class for 3 hours takes too long. I hated this style of lab. It took forever. I would keep whatever we had before. No changes in physics labs Worse. 2 1 The shorter the length, the easier to concentrate and learn. The only problem with outside class is there is no TA to help with questions. Yes. Predictions, then experiments helped to focus the themes of the lesson. Shorter lab times! After too long, it becomes difficult to focus. And printing graphs is a waste of paper I like checking w/ people to see if I'm doing it right Yeah, uncertainties took up time and they Do not print out graphs. didn't really teach me anything Three hours is a long time to be working straight. We may learn better if the work is spread out over time. I would have liked it better if only the experiment part was done in lab. Clearer explanations of instructions. *Printed graphs are a waste of paper. Eliminate this part to save trees. 3 3 It took me a long time to 1 2 So, I don't have to spend too much time on the I like the other ones better. finish it so, maybe some hint pre lab so that I can get the experiment done. would be helpful. I would have pre and post lab done after class so that the students have more time to get stuff done b/c all the students aren't on the same paste (sic) some know the materials very well some don't It is not helpful No print outs Deals w/ vectors and we 2 The last page was ridiculous 2 don't use vectors in lab. Find these values from a graph? Better because it gave us a set of Nothing. equations in the start Online is subject to bugs; 3hrs too long. Yes, b/c it was shorter and you come to lab better prepared. Only pre lab was good Online would prevent me from losing papers and Somewhat boring and tedious usually could also be changed from year to year. resulting in forgetting everything after. Clear up instructions, change pre/post lab. Page 4/6
A 3 hour lab is very tedious and you usually rush to get it done as quick as possible Worse, it is too much to try and do a prelab, lab and postlab all in one class. I would keep the normal 3 hours lab or have a pre lab/post lab outside of class This is just a slight preference, but I know from my chemistry class that when I do pre lab stuff before class I forget it by the time of lab. I do like doing postlab outside of class. It helps me learn and I have trouble focusing that long at one time. Better. We didn't have to spend all our time calculating uncertainties. Also, I liked the math The 3 hour labs aren't fun, but its one less thing I have to worry about outside of class. Better. Not having to calculate uncertainties for every value allowed me to focus more on the concepts rather than the painstaking world of calculating uncertainties. Labs that are done more as a large group with larger scale experiments like we see in lecture (like the rocket wagon). Pushing carts on tracks for hours at a time makes me feel like I'm in high school again. It's hard to keep interested (blank) 2 A single 3 hour session is too long. About the same. Eliminate tutorial section Takes too long No, worse didn't like it 2 1 Shouldn't be done in lab 2 But restrict pre/post to 1 hr! This lab rocks! Less class time. online work easier to turn in, Yes. especially if immediately graded w/ multiple attempts. Explore more! Design your own experiment! But, no tutorial homework if lab is to be taken Better. Students design their own experiments. home OK, kinda helpful. 3 No time for all this work, besides tutorial and It is the same for me. Very tedious at times. Sometimes questions are asked that online homework aren't clear or easy Okay, kind of helpful 3 No time to do stuff out of class. Better. Not sure. There's a lot of tricky stuff. Maybe demo would help No pressures Worse, much more work to be done. Stick to the old labs. Page 5/6
Key to responses Postlab % Score indicates approximate grade Predicting Making the predictions was, for me, 1 = Easy I always got them right 2 = Interesting I usually got them right, but I really had to think. 3 = Challenging I sometimes got them wrong. 4 = Hopeless I rarely knew what to do. Prelab I found the pre lab assignment to be 1 = Helpful 2 = Not helpful 3 = Other: (prelab comment) Postlab I found the post lab assignment to be 1 = A good way to measure what I learned 2 = Not very relevant to what I learned 3 = Other: (postlab comment) Pref I would prefer to have 1 = A two hour lab period with pre and post lab work done outside of class on paper. 2 = A two hour lab period with pre and post lab work done outside of class online. 3 = A three hour lab with all parts done in class Pref reason Reason for your preference: Style? Compared to the other labs in this course, did you like the style of the lab better or worse? Why? What to change If you were the instructor of the course, what would you change? Page 6/6
