We will study the many business models, innovations and applications of technology that are showing promise today and encourage students to think about fresh products and processes that can be applied to this sector. COURSE PREREQUISITE(S) No particular prerequisites. Students should have a general interest in the education sector and its practical problems and innovations. Technical skills relevant to the course will be taught as needed. COURSE OBJECTIVES Appreciate that education is a vast and critical industry with many stakeholders and challenges Realize that many tools from the worlds of management can be applied to help us understand these challenges and propose solutions Study a vast range of modern innovations in education such as online education and creative curriculums Appreciate the career opportunities that are being created in the education sector

3 LEARNING OUTCOMES Understand the kind of skills needed to work in the education sector as well as relevant career options Develop the confidence to think like an education entrepreneur and pitch ideas that may be relevant to your immediate surroundings GRADING BREAKUP AND POLICY Attendance (5%): There will be an explicit policy for class attendance and in class discipline. Class Participation (10%): Students are expected to come prepared with pre assigned readings including cases. CP grading is relative. The ability to engage in dialogue and identify patterns and connections in concepts discussed in class is rewarded. Quizzes: (20%): In class quizzes assessing how closely students are following readings, concepts and in class discussions. These may be objective or subjective but will be spread throughout the semester to encourage consistency of performance. They will specifically focus on drawing connections between related content in the course. We will likely have 6 quizzes and drop the lowest one. Individual Project on Making a Khan Academy Style Educational Video (15%): Students will work in teams of two to create an original educational video on a style similar to that of Khan Academy. Each such video will come with a short write up explaining the process by which the product was developed and iterated upon based on consumer feedback. Students will thus experience working as a product manager for an educational product. Outline for an Online Course (15%): Students will individually work on a brief exercise that invites them to pitch an idea for a new online course that will have popular appeal. It may be based on one of their own hobbies/interests or involve developing an outline for a course associated with a recognizable figure. Students will learn to think about what might be appealing to the market and design the product accordingly. Individual Presentation on Experience with Innovation in Education (10%): Given the nature of the course, I am partly relying on students to generate the content as per their own interests. Each student will be given an opportunity to identify an original topic related to education and present it to his peers based on his practical experience e.g. your experience in taking an online course, your interaction with an educational toy or your visit to a school with an innovative curriculum. These presentations will be spread throughout the semester. Group Project (25%): The major project of the course can be taken up in teams of up to 4. Students will be expected to develop an original product/service for the educational sector. Examples include: 1) Suggesting a design and distribution plan for an original educational game 2) A training plan for a specific organization 3) An operational plan for setting up a new kind of school with a distinctive curriculum 4) Provide consulting services to an existing school, such as a high school or LUMS, on how to improve outcomes 10% of the grade will be for a slide deck summarizing the findings. This will be the final presentation. 15% will be for a professional report explaining the product with a particular focus on how the product builds upon recent academic research and trends in the industry.

5 5 The Paradigm of Online Education Readings from The One World School House by Salman Khan In class Exercise on Designing an Online Course Readings from The One World School House by Salman Khan 9 The Paradigm of Educational Games 10 Readings from The One World School House by Salman Khan An overview of success stories in online education like Udacity, Coursera, Udemy Discussion on the experience of online learning, value of online credentials and the best practices in developing educational content for this medium We will look at some of the key areas of relevant research such as how to improve retention of online students At this point in the semester, I will expect students to have read Part 1 ( Learning to Teach ) and Part 2 ( The Broken Model ) of the book We will discuss Salman Khan s explanation of why he feels education needs to be revamped This is in preparation for the assignment in which the students will be pitching an idea for an online course At this point in the semester, I d expect students to have finished Part 3 ( Into the Real World ) of the book We will discuss the practical experiments that have demonstrated the benefits of this learning paradigm An overview of debates and success stories in the world of educational games Study of the business models of the most successful such games and analysis of their impact in the classroom At this point, students should have completed Part 4 ( The One World Schoolhouse ) We will discuss the practicality of this educational model I ll walk students through my personal experience of working on educational games with Houghton Mifflin, BBC and others 11 Developing Educational Games Students will understand the process of preparing a pitch, project plan, budget, various prototyping tools etc. 12 Readings from The Nordic Theory of Everything by Anu Partanen Students will be expected to have completed chapter 4 Secrets to Educational Success We will discuss the distinctive aspects of the Finland model We will discuss other innovative models by country (e.g. vocational training in Germany)
