1 EZread Dolch Preprimer Sight Word Flash Cards Congratulations on your purchase of EZread Dolch Preprimer Sight Word Flash Cards, a versatile set that helps students master important sight words. This Really Good Stuff product includes: Double-sided Flash Cards Rings This Really Good Stuff Activity Guide Using Flash Card activities, you can provide an individual or a small group of students with the repetitive visual practice they need to master sight words. Flash Cards help students recognize some of the most frequently occurring words automatically by sight, rather than by sounding out letter sounds that they may still be learning. You have two visual options for sight word practice with our double-sided Cards. For most children, the plain-words side provides all the visual support necessary to master the words. For some students, you may choose to differentiate instruction by using the shaped-word side, providing more visual support. Repetitive practice with reading common words is a great way to improve on the sight-word knowledge base and to build reading fluency. Managing EZread Dolch Preprimer Sight Word Flash Cards Keep the Cards organized in numerical order on the included Rings and later while in use, separate challenging Cards from those that students have mastered. Avoid handing students a ringed set of more Cards than they can manage, as this is overwhelming. Use the Progress Monitoring Reproducible to assess students. Introducing Sight Words. Hold up each Sight Word Card. Have the student read it aloud. Observe how long it takes for the student to read each word correctly. If the student is not able to read many of the first few words, stop the activity to avoid student frustration. If you notice the student needs the visual support of the word shape, use that side of the Cards. Over time, go back to the plain side.. Set aside words that the student cannot read and praise the student for correctly reading some of the words.. Mix up the remaining Cards the student read and again display them one at a time, increasing the pace slightly as you hold them up for the student.. Repeat until the student is able to read the words automatically.. Set realistic goals for the child to master more words within a time frame. Share your documentation of the number of mastered words and include the students in documenting their progress on the reproducible. All activity guides can be found online: Helping Teachers Make A Difference 0 Really Good Stuff Made in Guangzhou, China #

2 EZread Dolch Preprimer Sight Word Flash Cards Activities for Further Practice Timed Readings Using a stopwatch and the Progress Monitoring Reproducible, time students in their reading of a set of Cards. Then see if students can beat that time, increasing fluency. Note: This is not suggested for intensely struggling readers or students who may feel uneasy about being timed. It should be a fun challenge the students enjoy. Up High Down Low Have students "write" the word with just their hand, making huge letters in the air, saying each letter as it is formed, and then "reading" the word as they "underline" it with their finger. Then have students write the word in their notebooks, saying each letter as it is formed, and then reading the word as they underline it with their finger. Word Sorting Have students study the appearance of - sight words by sorting the Cards. Allow them to discover similarities between groups of words, whether they share the same beginning or ending sound, ascending or descending letters, word length, etc. Check and discuss the completed sorts. Literacy Center After modeling for students how to use Flash Cards with a partner, place a ringed set or sets in a center for partners to use. Pair a more fluent reader with a less fluent reader for accountability and accurate practice. Concentration Select at least eight sight words and write each on two different index Cards. Mix up the Cards and place them face down in rows. Have two to four students take turns flipping over two Cards at a time, trying to find a match. When the student gets a matched pair, he or she gets to keep the pair. If not, the Cards go back to their original positions, and the turn is over. The game is over when all the Cards have been matched. The winner is the player with the most pairs. Word Hunt Have students hunt for sight words in the context of reading materials, classroom labeling, and sentences you display for them. Use It in Context Use the words in sentences as you go. Then challenge students to do the same. The sentences can be simple as long as they make sense. Write a short sentence for each word, and have students read the sentence back to you. Then have students copy it, underlining the word, into their notebooks. I can run. Songs, Stories, Poems, and Chants Almost every primary learner responds well to rhythmic oral language and fun stories. Display some oral text, such as a poem, that includes one of their sight words in repetition. Have students listen as you chant the poem for them while pointing to each word. Repeat, asking students to join in when they can. Once the poem is memorized, ask a student to help you find and underline the word every time it appears. Progress Monitoring Reproducible Use this sheet for two students if you choose by cutting it in half. You may use a different-colored pen or pencil for each assessment session so that you can see progress on one sheet. Simply write the date(s) in the same color with which you record. The first portion is to record words the child correctly reads. Check off the space after the word to indicate mastery. If the child is a fast reader, it may be more efficient to only record those words missed. You might jot down the time it takes to get through the whole list also. The second portion is to document progress in timed readings to monitor fluency. Write the date in one of the two spaces at the bottom of the graph. You may choose to time a child for minute - times per sitting, or once per sitting over several days or weeks. Use a different-colored pencil for each timing to indicate progress. Simply color in or draw a line on the graph from zero up to the number of words read correctly. Using a different color for each reading in one day, you can draw up to two lines within one column. It is important to include students in this process of setting goals and celebrating progress from one reading to the next. 5 Make-A-Word Center : Pre-Primer Dolch Words Congratulations on your purchase of the Really Good Stuff Make-A-Word Center : Pre-Primer Dolch Words, a handson activity that offers explicit, systematic practice for primary students to master high-frequency words. Objective Using a predictable structure, students recognize, read, build, and write common high-frequency words. Common Core State Standard Read common high-frequency words by sight. This Really Good Stuff product includes: Dolch Word Center Mats 0 Pre-Primer Dolch Word Cards lowercase Foam Letters Compartmentalized Box with Lid Set of Stickers This Really Good Stuff Teaching Guide This multisensory sight word kit includes the Pre-Primer Dolch words students encounter in early reading material. Early readers are already familiar with highfrequency words as part of their listening and speaking vocabularies, but reading and spelling those words often causes confusion. By focusing on and manipulating one word at a time, students internalize its appearance and recognize it in other contexts, building reading confidence and fluency. The Dolch words make up 0- percent of the reading material children encounter. The Make-A-Word Center : Pre-Primer Dolch Words features 0 Dolch words early readers must learn. Because most of these words cannot be learned through the use of pictures, practicing them in isolation in a variety of ways helps students narrow their focus and recognize the words with automaticity. Students see the word, say it, build it using individual Foam Letters, and then write it. This repeated, predictable, systematic exposure to these early high-frequency words benefits all readers, including those learning English as a second language or struggling with word recognition. Use Make-A-Word Center : Pre-Primer Dolch Words with individual students and small groups as a direct instruction tool or in a literacy center. Managing Make-A-Word Center : Pre-Primer Dolch Words Should you need this or any other Really Good Stuff Teaching Guides, download them from our Web site at Label the box compartments with the Stickers. Store the Pre-Primer Dolch Word Cards, the Foam Letters, and the Dolch Word Center Mats in the provided Compartmentalized Box. Place dry erase markers or dry erase crayons (not included) in the box also. Make a copy of the included Pre-Primer Dolch Word Progress Monitoring Reproducible for data collection as a progress monitoring tool and as a guide for students targeted practice. Make copies of the Student Recording Sheet Reproducible for students to self-monitor reading and spelling the words. Introducing Make-A-Word Center : Pre-Primer Dolch Words Model the Activity First, set aside words that the students cannot read with automaticity. Make a copy of the Pre-Primer Dolch Word Progress Monitoring Reproducible, one for each student. Highlight the words for practice. Also make a copy of the Student Recording Sheet Reproducible for each child to self-monitor progress. Begin by selecting a Pre-Primer Dolch Word Card and placing it in the first column under Read It. on the work mat. Read the word aloud with students. Have students name the letters in the word and then demonstrate how to gather the Foam Letters needed to build that word. Build the word in the second column, Build It. Model how to write the word in the third column, Write It, using a dry erase marker and saying each letter as you form it. Be sure to read it in its entirety after spelling it aloud and writing it. Point to and read each of the three versions of the word, carefully tracking. Determine your criteria for students to record words on their sheet, either reading it with automaticity or spelling it without seeing it. Show students how to place all materials back into the appropriate compartments. Wipe off the Work Mat with a soft cloth, completely erasing the word. Keep track of your students progress. Check off the words from the Pre-Primer Dolch Word Progress Monitoring Reproducible, and write observations on the lines provided. Encourage students to track their own progress by filling in their Student Recording Sheet Reproducible as they master reading and spelling words. 9 EZread Pre-Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards Congratulations on your purchase of the EZread Pre-Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards, a versatile set that helps primary students master important sight words and common phrases. Objective To read common Dolch word phrases fluently and automatically. Common Core State Standards Read common high-frequency words by sight. Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words. This Really Good Stuff product includes: 0 two-sided flash cards This Really Good Stuff Teaching Guide Using flash card activities, you can provide your individual or small group of emergent readers the repetitive practice they need to master sight-words and short phrases. This helps students recognize some of the most frequently occurring words automatically by sight, rather than by sounding out letter sounds that they are still learning. Similar practice with reading common phrases is a great way to improve on the sight word knowledge base and to build reading fluency. Because most sight words do not stimulate a visual image in the mind of the reader, practicing them in common phrases helps students attach meaning and context to otherwise abstract words. The repeated contextualized exposure to sight words allows you to reach all readers, especially those struggling with word recognition or learning English. The words chosen for the EZread Pre-Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards are taken only from the Pre-Primer Dolch word list or are words that are easily decodable. The phrases themselves are common phrases that students will encounter many times in their reading. For each Dolch word there are common phrases included. Managing the EZread Pre-Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards Should you need this or any other Really Good Stuff Teaching Guides, download them from our Web site at Keep the cards organized in numerical order. Each Dolch word in the phrase is highlighted and for each word there are different phrases. The phrases are on a ring that can be easily opened to take out cards if you would like. Record phrases that challenge students to keep track of their progress and to aid in assessment. (See reproducible.) Storing the flash cards in baggies or on separate rings will allow you to access them easily during a lesson or when you want to place a selection of cards in a learning center. Introducing EZread Pre-Primer Dolch Word Phrase Cards. Select a set of phrases for a particular Dolch word.. Hold up each Dolch Word Phrase Card. Have the student read it aloud.
