10 LESSON 1 SHOW & DO Model the Skill Steps in the positive role play. a. Modify the role play if necessary. b. Select 4 actors and 2 observers. Name the 3 Skill Steps modeled. Look Listen Do/Respond Watch and Listen Closely Situation: A student is talking about an animal in a show and tell session in your class. Three other students are actively listening. Actors needed who can show the 3 Skill Steps involved in listening to others! Observers needed who can determine if the 3 Skill Steps were shown by the actors. Let s review the Skill Steps you saw. 11 LESSON 1 PRACTICE Remind students of the 3 Skill Steps. Watch and Listen Closely Remember the steps: Step 1: Look at the person talking. Use your eyes. Make eye contact. Ask students to form small groups and select a Role- Play Card and show each other they can do the 3 Skill Steps. Reinforce excellent examples of skill demonstration. Encourage students to practice these skills all week. Step 2: Listen to the person talking. Use your ears and eyes. Step 3: Do something to show you are actively listening. 23 LESSON 2 DO Ask students to join small groups and show each other they can do the 3 Skill Steps. Remind students to use the Skill Steps Cue Card or their Student Engagement Record if they need help. Encourage students to practice these skills all week. Role-Play Time Situation: It is the end of school, and your teacher is about to review with the class a homework assignment that is due tomorrow. The dismissal bell rings before the teacher can finish talking. Remember the steps: Step 1: Look at the person talking. Use your eyes. Make eye contact. Step 2: Listen to the person talking. Use your ears and eyes. Step 3: Do something to show you are actively listening. Nod your head, smile, or respond with a question when the person is finished talking. Practice to become a star!
