Instruction is completed on a computer with the support of faculty. Topics will vary depending on student skill level and pathway but may include signed arithmetic, decimals, fractions, basic algebra, equation solving, polynomials, graphing, rational expressions, set theory, logic and probability. NO calculators allowed for this class. Required skill level: Prealgebra level math (placement 1) Textbook: Access code for MYMATHLAB system and access to a computer with FIREFOX browser. If you do not have a FIREFOX browser, you can download it for free on your home computer. Elements of Statistics Different Text * or TECM 1401: Industrial Mathematics Course Requirements and Grading Policy Class Format The class is designed so that you may progress at your own pace through the structured developmental pathway that you have chosen. Regardless of placement code, you will begin with Module 1 in the chosen pathway. If you have already mastered much of the early material, you can accelerate through these modules. In subsequent classes (0411 and 0412) you will begin on the module following the last module completed successfully (even if you have to start over in that module). You will start each module with the option of taking a pre-test in the lab with the instructor. A score of 85 or better on the pre-test will advance you to the next module. If you do not score the 85 or choose not to take the pre-test, you will be directed to progress through the videos and homework assignments that will prepare you for the exit test. Once reaching a minimum of 85 on all the assignments for the module, you will be allowed to take the exit test. You will test and retest on a module until you reach score of 75. Then you will proceed to the next module. ALL TESTING (PRE AND EXIT) MUST OCCUR WITH THE INSTRUCTOR IN THE LAB DURING CLASS TIME. To complete this program, you are required to successfully complete all modules in your chosen pathway (Algebra or Statistics). If all modules are not completed in the first semester of study, work will continue in MATH 0411 (and 0412 if needed). Once all modules are complete, you may progress to college level coursework. A student who successfully gets to within 2 modules of the completion of the course by the end of the semester has the option to conditionally enroll in the college level mathematics course the following semester (College Algebra or Statistics) while completing the remaining modules.

3 Homework/Videos For each learning objective within a module, there is an assignment that contains a video and practice problems. You must watch the video before beginning the practice. The notes used to create the videos are available in the Document Sharing area of MyMathLab. You may bring your own paper and print these in campus computer labs or pay to print them in Learning Services. A minimum grade of 85 is required for completion of each assignment. The homework is set up so that you can access the learning objectives (video and practice) in any order. However, all assignments must have a grade of 85 or higher before you will have access to the exit test. You are expected to keep a notebook or a spiral to keep up with your class notes (videos) and your written work for your assignments. Testing/Retesting All testing is done in the presence of the instructor in the lab during class time. The instructor may choose to have a certain area of the room set aside for testing. To insure maximum time to take a pre/post test, you should plan to take the exam at the beginning of class. Your instructor will explain how you sign up to take exams. Exams may not be taken during open lab time with a tutor or another instructor. You may be provided paper to use for testing and required to turn this in to the instructor upon completion. If the minimum required score (75%) is not achieved on the first test attempt, the instructor will determine what you need to do before having another testing attempt, such as revisiting homework assignments, working with the individualized study plan, and/or working with other students on the same module. You will not be allowed to retake the exam until you have completed the activities assigned by the instructor. Do not expect to be granted immediate access for a re-test. If an exam attempt results in a score of 45% or less, you will be required to complete all of the assignments for the module again. Class Activities Although the class is designed for students to work independently and at their own pace, community is critical for a positive learning environment. To help foster this atmosphere there may be assignments throughout the semester that require students to do work that is not part of the regular module assignments. All of these activities will be completed during class time and many will require group work. Evaluation of your class record keeping can be part of the class activities. Students not present for a class activity will receive a 0 for the assignment. Students refusing to participate in class activities will be dismissed from class and receive an unexcused absence for the day. Student Evaluation/Grades To complete each module, you must earn: A minimum score of 85% on the module pre-test OR A minimum score of 85% on each homework AND A minimum score of 75% on the exit test.

4 SUGGESTED GRADING OPTION Final grades for the course will be calculated based on the number of modules completed in a single semester according to the following table: Number of Modules Completed Grade Earned 7 or more (or all remaining A modules if finishing the pathway) 5-6 B 4 C Less than 4 F ALTERNATE GRADING OPTION To receive a passing grade for MATH 0410, 6 or more modules must be successfully completed within the semester. To receive a passing grade for MATH 0411 and MATH 0412, 5 or more modules must be successfully completed within the semester. If fewer than the minimum number of modules are completed, an F is assigned for the course. However, if you have fewer than 5 modules to complete the pathway, then the completion of those modules will earn a passing grade. For your records, please complete the following sentence: I am starting in Module and I must complete Module to pass the class. The passing grade of A, B or C is determined by the following: Module Tests (Pre or Exit) 70% Homework Average 20% Class Activities 10% Student Learning Outcomes At the end of the semester, during the regularly scheduled final exam time, you will be required to take the learning outcomes assessment over all the modules you completed. This assessment will be graded and counts as an additional module test in the calculation of your course grade. Completion of the outcomes assessment is required to move on to college level math courses. Progress Plans At the beginning of the semester, you will work with your instructor to outline a plan of work for the semester. This work plan will take into account your academic goals, available free time, family and work obligations, starting skill level and past experience. Throughout the semester, you are encouraged to meet with the instructor and review the progress. The instructor may schedule a meeting in order to make revisions to the progress plan.

5 Attendance and Withdrawals: The Brazosport College Mathematics Department believes attendance is critical for the comprehension of material. Therefore, if student absences exceed requirements set by the instructor, he/she may be withdrawn from the course. If a student is withdrawn from a developmental class and has not met the minimum passing score set by TSI, he/she will be withdrawn not only from the transitional mathematics course but from all other courses as well. As it pertains to this course, attendance is not optional. Once you exceed the equivalent of 4 absences, you may be withdrawn from the course. You may make arrangements to make up missed time at your instructor s discretion. This time must be agreed on ahead of time and documented. You may be withdrawn from the course once you exceed 4 absences (excused or unexcused). Please Note: Tardiness to class is disruptive to the learning environment and it is also absence from class. If you considerably late or you leave early, you will be counted absent. You will also be counted inexcusably absent (not able to make up) if you are asked to leave the lab because you are using your computer for anything other than the mathematics pertinent to this course. The college will notify you of the withdrawal by mail and you have a 10 day period to seek reinstatement from your teacher. Do not expect to be reinstated unless there are extenuating circumstances. Student Responsibilities Students are expected to fully participate in the course. The following criteria are intended to assist you in being successful in this course. a. understand the syllabus requirements b. use appropriate time management skills c. communicate with the instructor In addition, I expect each of you to behave in a way that provides for the most positive learning environment for all of the students in this class. This would include making every effort to be on time to class and prepared for class. PLEASE DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE DURING CLASS. If I notice cell phone use by any student I will ask that student to put the cell phone away. If it happens a second time, I will ask the student to leave for the day. 6 Academic Honesty Brazosport College assumes that students eligible to perform on the college level are familiar with the ordinary rules governing proper conduct including academic honesty. The principle of academic honesty is that all work presented by you is yours alone. In this class, any occurrence of academic dishonesty will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for prompt adjudication, and will, at a minimum, result in a grade of zero on the assignment/quiz/test where the instance occurred and a second instance will result in an automatic F in the course. Remember that your integrity is far more valuable and lasting than a grade. It s not a good trade! Sanctions may be imposed beyond your grade in this course by the Dean of Student Services. 7 Suggestions for Success: Be organized! Just as you would in a regular face-to-face class, keep up with your notes and assignments in a spiral or notebook. Set weekly to-do lists to give yourself a way to stay focused and moving forward. Work outside of class. Watch videos and make notes of places where you need instructor or tutor intervention and use class times to get this assistance. Utilize the open lab time to have more opportunity to take pre/exit tests during class time. Conduct in the Mathematics Achievement Center Much time and expense went into creating a comfortable, spacious place for you to learn and succeed in mathematics. We hope you enjoy and appreciate this facility as much as we do. To ensure that our lab remains the best on campus, the following lab policies apply both during class time and open lab time. This facility was built for the study of mathematics only and is not an OPEN LAB in the sense that other computer labs are. If you wish to play on YouTube, get caught up on Facebook, or work on an English paper, please do so at another time and in another lab. Any viewing of material that is not pertinent to the course will result in immediate removal from the lab and an inexcusable absence. A second offense will result in a required meeting with the dean of students before being allowed back into the lab. When you leave your workspace in the lab, please shut down your computer, return the headphones to the hook, and ensure that your workspace is clean for the next student to use. Please make sure conversations are conducted quietly and respectfully so that all students in the lab can learn and test without distraction. Please do not bring food or drink into the lab. If you must take a quick nutrition break, do so in the hallway.
