2 Compare and Contrast Chart Britain and France Read page 54. As you read the chapter, complete as much information as you can on the following compare/contrast chart. France Britain Government Religion Language Location of Colonies System of Land Ownership How they got fur Anything else?
3 Mapping the British Colonies Label each of the 13 British Colonies (use p. 55). Include the date of settlement of each. Also label Jamestown, New York, Plymouth, Boston, Quebec City, Acadia, the Great Lakes (each of them), he St. Lawrence River. Include a compass rose, title, date and legend. Be sure to spell carefully, write straight across, label accurately, and colour labelled areas and water.

Graphing Assignment: Use page 56 to create a line graph that shows the population growth of New France and the Thirteen Colonies. Get the detailed assignment from your teacher.

Historical Significance Select one event or time period (era) that we have explored in Chapters 1, 2 or 3. Using the criteria for historical significance, explain why this era/event is so significant. Is it profound? How were people affected by the event or person? Was the event deeply felt by people? Was it widespread? How many people s lives were affected? Did it have a national or global impact? How durable was it? How long lasting were the changes? Are there monuments, memorials, celebrations?

How did they benefit? e. Who benefited the least from the HBC monopoly? Why did they not benefit? 4. What do you think the First Nations thought of the conflict between the French and British for control of Hudson Bay? 5. Suppose you were a French soldier involved in the capture of the British fort at Moose Factory. A First Nations person approaches you and asks where the British are. You respond that you defeated them and that now you own the land. The First Nations person says, How can you say you own the land? This has been the land of my clan forever. What would you say to this person? 6. What happened to land ownership as a result of the Treaty of Utrecht (see page 66)? What are some possible consequences of this change?
