1 HCA 3308, Health Information Principles and Practice Course Syllabus Course Description This course provides an overview of health information management (HIM), HIM principles, policies and procedures including health data content, collection, quality, registries, access, and retention. This course examines the use of technology in warehousing and mining, communicating, and safeguarding healthcare data as well as EHR and PHR. The benefits and challenges of healthcare information systems as well as the future of health information management systems are discussed. Course Textbook McWay, D. C. (2014). Identify the various systems of healthcare delivery. 2. Identify the careers and certifications available in the health information management profession. 3. Define the various terms related to the field of healthcare information. 4. Analyze healthcare data content and structures. 5. Understand the concepts and ethical and legal standards of health information management. 6. Identify health information management nomenclatures and classification systems. 7. Identify common health information management abbreviations. 8. Assess the importance of quality in healthcare management. 9. Evaluate the concepts and functions of database management. 10. Examine methods of research and measurement for health statistics. 11. Evaluate critical management issues in health information management. 12. Analyze the advantages and obstacles of evolving and developing healthcare information systems. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Study Guide: Each unit contains a Study Guide that provides students with the learning outcomes, unit lesson, required reading assignments, and supplemental resources. 2. Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 3. Unit Lesson: Each unit contains a Unit Lesson, which discusses unit material. 4. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. 5. Suggested Reading: Suggested Readings are listed in the Unit II study guide. Students are encouraged to read the resources listed if the opportunity arises, but they will not be tested on their knowledge of the Suggested Readings. 6. Learning Activities (Nongraded): A Nongraded Learning Activity is provided in Unit VIII to aid students in their course of study. HCA 3308, Health Information Principles and Practice 1

2 7. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are part of all CSU term courses. More information and specifications can be found in the Student Resources link listed in the Course Menu bar. 8. Unit Assessments: This course contains eight Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of each unit. Assessments are composed of multiple-choice, matching, true-false, ordering, and written response questions. 9. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units I, II, III, V, VI, VII, and VIII. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. Grading rubrics are included with each of these assignments. Specific information about accessing these rubrics is provided below. 10. Final Exam: Students are to complete a Final Exam in Unit VIII. All Final Exams are proctored see below for additional information. You are permitted four (4) hours to complete this exam in the presence of your approved proctor. This is an open book exam. Only course textbooks and a calculator, if necessary, are allowed when taking proctored exams. The Final Exam is composed of multiple-choice, written response, fill-in-the-blank, and true or false questions. 11. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 12. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. CSU Online Library The CSU Online Library is available to support your courses and programs. The online library includes databases, journals, e-books, and research guides. These resources are always accessible and can be reached through the library webpage. To access the library, log into the mycsu Student Portal, and click on CSU Online Library. You can also access the CSU Online Library from the My Library button on the course menu for each course in Blackboard. The CSU Online Library offers several reference services. (library@columbiasouthern.edu) and telephone ( ) assistance is available Monday Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm and Friday from 8 am to 3 pm. Librarians can help you develop your research plan or assist you in finding relevant, appropriate, and timely information. Reference requests can include customized keyword search strategies, links to articles, database help, and other services. Unit Assignments Unit I Journal Assignment Career Mapping There are many degree and certification options available in the field of health information management (HIM). Conduct a search of the different certificate credentials that are available and submit your answers to the following questions in a word document as a journal assignment. Please follow the link below to access the American Health Information Management Association s (AHIMA) website. Locate the HIM Career Map under the Career and Student Center tab located across the top of the page. Review the contents of the career map. After you have reviewed the Career Map section, click on the Certification tab for more information about certifications for specific careers. Your response should include all of the major components listed below and reflect in-depth consideration and personalization of the chosen HIM career. Based upon your chosen HIM career, discuss the following: 1. How far you would like to go given the categories listed. 2. Is it considered a current or emerging career in the field? 3. 3 5. Why have you chosen this particular credential and setting? 6. Why is this profession important to the field of health information management? Your paper should be at least 500 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Unit II Assignment Health Information Resource Activity You are the registered health information administrator (RHIA) at Orange Grove Hospital, and you have been asked to prepare a resource information sheet for staff in your department on how to handle and avoid insurance fraud and abuse. Create this resource sheet in a Word document, and include the following: 1. definitions of fraud and abuse (with examples), 2. the role of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), 3. the role of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and 4. action steps to avoid and report such cases. Be creative in your approach to developing this document. Unit III Assignment Data Flow Diagram Select one of the three data flow diagram designs from pp of the textbook. Construct your own data flow diagram and direction (bidirectional, multidirectional, or unidirectional). Describe the process of data flow in a healthcare organization. Flow-chart templates can be found in Microsoft Word under the Insert (Shapes) tab or by searching the Internet. Unit V Essay HIT Research Project Conduct thorough investigation of a specific advancement or current trend that has taken place as it relates to research in health information technology (HIT). Your research should focus on identifying one health information technology tool or system that has contributed to improving the management of health information and the overall quality of patient care. Once you have selected your HIT area of focus, prepare a three- to five-page paper (not including the title page) that contains the following: 1. one HIT system or tool, 2. when it was developed and introduced and by whom, 3. the type of research study or design that was used, 4. the purpose that it has served or will serve in the field of health information management, 5. the advantages and disadvantages of its use, 6. the outlook for further advancement in this area, 7. the data sets that are applicable to this type of system, and 8. the data standards that are applicable to this type of system. Within your paper, include statistical data that represents trends that show outcomes as a result of using the tool or system that you have chosen. 4 Unit VI Assignment Chapter 12 of the textbook identifies eight areas of functionality that are made possible through the use of the electronic health records (EHR) on page 303. Select one of the functionality areas and complete the following steps: 1. Conduct a search on the web of healthcare organizations that have adopted and implemented the EHR (this can be a physician s office, hospital, skilled nursing facility, or any other healthcare facility). 2. Focus on how the organization has utilized the EHR in one of the functionality areas (the name of the system/vendor, what department is utilizing the system, and for what purpose). 3. Address the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation. 4. Address whether or not they received any meaningful use incentives. 5. Complete your overall analysis of the EHR and the contributions or problems that it has posed to the quality of health care and health information management. Summarize your answers in a Word document that is a minimum of one page in length. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Unit VII Assignment Performance Evaluation You are the HIM (Health Information Manager) of a community-based hospital that employs 500 clinical and administrative professionals. In preparation for upcoming performance reviews, you have been asked by the Director of Human Resources to assist in the development of a performance evaluation tool that is department specific. Conduct a thorough investigation of various functions and job responsibilities of HIM staff to develop a performance evaluation tool that will be used to measure the performance of employees in your department. Search the Internet, and locate a performance evaluation manual for supervisors to use as a guide to help you in your development. This resource is only to be used as a guide and cannot be duplicated. Be sure to include the link and/or reference to the manual you used as a guide. Summarize your response in a Word document that is a minimum of one page in length. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. Unit VIII Assignment Case Study Review the following case study and provide the following information: You are the director of health information management services at Anywhere Hospital. Because of increased awareness of the role that the revenue cycle process plays in your facility, you have resolved to minimize any delays that are within your level of control. Identify the necessary steps to be taken, and discuss the ways that you can improve the revenue cycle. Summarize your response in a Word document that is a minimum of one page in length. 5 APA Guidelines The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with the primary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papers and projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated grading rubric when available. Students can find CSU s Citation Guide by clicking here. This document includes examples and sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Success Center. Grading Rubrics This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities. Rubric categories include: (1) Discussion Board, (2) Assessment (Written Response), and (3) Assignment. However, it is possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have Assessments). The Discussion Board rubric can be found within Unit I s Discussion Board submission instructions. The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment. Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting Tools and then My Grades. Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your Discussion Boards, Assessments, and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades. Final Examination Guidelines Final Exams are to be administered to students by an approved Proctor. CSU approves two flexible proctoring options: a standard Proctor, who is chosen by the student and approved by the university, or Remote Proctor Now (RP Now), an ondemand, third-party testing service that proctors examinations for a small fee. Students choosing RP Now must have an operational webcam/video with audio, a high-speed Internet connection, and the appropriate system rights required to download and install software. To review the complete Examination Proctor Policy, including a list of acceptable Proctors, Proctor responsibilities, Proctor approval procedures, and the Proctor Agreement Form, go to the mycsu Student Portal from the link below. Only course textbooks, writing utensils, and a calculator, if necessary, are allowed when taking proctored exams. Other materials are not permitted unless specified in the examination instructions and only the sources identified in the instructions may be used as source material.
