1 Online Basic Statistics Course Information Madison Area Technical College Spring 2014 Syllabus Instructor Information Catalog Number: Class Numbers: and Dates: 1/13/2014-5/16/2014 Credits: 4 Web: Publisher Website: Pearson Course ID: bannen95611 Instructor: Sarah Bannen scbannen@madisoncollege.edu Phone: (608) ; Skype: sarah.bannen Truax Office Hours: MoTuTh 7:30-9:20am, D3619 West Office Hours: Friday 7:30-9:20am, Room 347 (Office hours are by appointment; see below for additional availability.) Description In Basic Statistics appropriate statistical techniques are studied for the systematic collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of experimental results, including surveys and quality control. The focus is on understanding the techniques of statistical inference (confidence intervals and hypothesis testing) and interpreting results as found in articles and reports. It emphasizes the inherent uncertainty when decisions are made on the basis of sample data. Includes descriptive statistics, basic probability theory, sampling distributions and the Central Limit Theorem; the binomial, normal, Student t, chi-square, and F distributions; and techniques of 1- and 2-sample tests, linear regression, correlation, an introduction to analysis of variance and selected nonparametric procedures. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra, with a grade of C or better, or Intermediate Algebra Parts 1, and 2, with a grade of C or better in both parts, or appropriate placement score. Online Learning Expectations This is an online course, so it requires you to use a computer extensively. This course may not be right for you if you do not have about hours each week to complete the course work between January 13 and May 16; you do not like working with computers, the Internet, or technology; or you do not have unlimited, highspeed access to the Internet. Please be aware of the technology recommendations for Madison College: http: //madisoncollege.edu/in/technology-recommendations. Also note that technical issues are not an excuse for incomplete work in this course. If you are having technical problems, you can contact the Madison College Help Desk ( or use computers located on any of our campuses. Course Format There are weekly deadlines in this course every Friday and Tuesday at 11:59pm. See the schedule below. You will participate in discussions and turn in assignments for the final project on Blackboard. You will do homework and quizzes on the MyStatLab course website, which requires Adobe Flash player. For statistical calculations, you can use Microsoft Excel (supported versions include 2013, 2010, 2007, or Excel for Mac 2010); or online software called MyStatCrunch, which can be accessed for free from the MyStatLab course website. The final project involves collecting original data, making an inference, and presenting your results using PowerPoint and VoiceThread. There will also be a proctored written midterm and final exam. See below for details. You should plan to spend about 2-3 hours per day, 5 days per week, on this class. It is better to spend the time each day than to cram it all in before the deadline. Netiquette This course will be more successful for everyone if we all become part of a supportive, collaborative community. Please do your part by participating actively and treating your colleagues respectfully. Please read the online etiquette guidelines at You will be expected to follow these guidelines when you post to the discussion board and when you send s related to this class. 1
2 Basic Statistics Spring 2014 Syllabus Page 2 of 10 Getting Started Step 1: Buy the textbook as well as access to the MyStatLab course website. The required textbook is Essentials of Statistics, 4th edition, by M. Triola, published by Pearson, The textbook plus MyStatLab access are purchased as a package. For more information, see this handout. There are two options: MyStatLab access (includes e-book) You can get free access for 14 days, but after that you must pay or lose access. Price: $93.50 MyStatLab access + paper textbook ISBN: Madison College Bookstore: Price: $ Step 2: Register on the MyStatLab course website. Location: Course ID: bannen95611 Don t wait for your paycheck or financial aid to get access to MyStatLab. Read this handout to learn how to get free access for 14 days: It s important to get started right away! Step 3: Do the introductory assignments. These assignments are due on January 14, the second day of class: Read the syllabus and take the Syllabus Quiz (on Blackboard) Participate in Discussion 0 (on Blackboard), in which you will introduce yourself to the class Do Homework 0 (on MyStatLab), a tutorial on how to enter answers for your homework and quizzes Step 4 (Optional): Obtain Microsoft Excel. We will use statistical software extensively in this class. There are many options, but the two I recommend are StatCrunch (which you can access from MyStatLab) and Microsoft Excel. You can choose to use StatCrunch for the entire course, or Excel for the entire course, or you can do a little of each. StatCrunch is more user-friendly, and Excel is more reliable. As a Madison College student, you can obtain Microsoft Office at a greatly reduced price from the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog: Step 5: View the weekly checklist, and get going! The weekly checklists (on Blackboard) will tell you exactly what learning activities to do and what assignments to complete each week. Your weekly due dates will be Fridays and Tuesdays at 11:59pm. Step 6: Stay in touch. Please check your Madison College at least once every weekday so that you don t miss important announcements. Seek help early if you are falling behind! I am always happy to hear from you. You are welcome to visit me during my office hours, or to set up a Skype or phone appointment with me.

The homework is designed as a learning activity. There are no time limits on the homework, and there are many ways to get help while you are working on it, including links to the e-book and other multimedia content from the publisher, links to instructor videos, access to Ask My Instructor which allows you to send me an showing me where you got stuck, and Help Me Solve This which takes you through the problem step-by-step. Even though the homework has due dates, you can always go back and improve your score on old homework. Policies for Quizzes The weekly quizzes will consist of MyStatLab problems that are similar to those on the homework. The quizzes will be timed and you must finish them after you start them. The time limit for each quiz is 2 hours. The quizzes are open book, open notes, but you must do them on your own with no help from other people. Note that MyStatLab does not give partial credit, so you should read the instructions carefully for each question before you enter your answer. You must finish the quizzes by the due dates (Tuesday at 11:59pm) they will be closed afterwards. Before the due dates, you may take each quiz twice. Your highest score will be counted. It is imperative that you keep up with the pace of this course, so the quiz due dates are hard deadlines. However, you may have one quiz extension during the course, as long as you ask for the extension before the quiz deadline. Policies for Discussions Every week you will be required to post once in the discussion board on Blackboard by Friday at 11:59pm and respond to two of your classmates threads by Tuesday at 11:59pm. On the discussion board there are no right or wrong answers and no minimum number of words or sentences, but your post must have some substance. Examples of acceptable responses include asking a question; answering a classmate s question or providing a clarification; pointing out something you found interesting, surprising, or confusing; suggesting an extension or connection; posting a link to a real-world application; or posting a link to an explanation you found helpful. Each week s discussion will be worth a possible 10 points. The instructions will specify how the points will be allocated; if you follow the instructions and participate in all of the discussions on time, you will receive full credit. You will not get credit for late posts. Policies for the Midterm and Final Exams The Midterm Exam and Final Exam will be proctored. You will have the option of coming to one of the testing sessions at the Truax or West campus that will be scheduled by the instructor, or of finding your own proctor if you live too far away. You must complete the Midterm Exam on March 12 or 13, and the Final Exam on May 14 or 15. There are no make-ups. Regardless of your overall score in the class, you must achieve at least 72% on both the Midterm and Final Exams to pass the class. The Midterm Exam will cover Chapters 1-6, and the Final Exam will cover Chapters The Midterm and Final will be written exams; you will not have access to a computer during the exams. You may bring one page of notes, front and back, and a calculator. The questions will be similar to those on the quizzes, but you will not have to do any of the statistical calculations. (When necessary, you will be shown the output of statistical software.) The time limit will be two hours.
5 Basic Statistics Spring 2014 Syllabus Page 5 of 10 Policies for the Final Project For the final project, you will plan an experiment or a method for collecting data in an observational study. After collecting original data, you will create graphs and summarize your data, and then make an inference from your data by using the methods learned in the course. You will create a PowerPoint presentation and post the presentation on VoiceThread, along with a 3-5 minute voice recording. Finally, you will watch your classmates presentations and respond to two of them. The final project will be worth 140 points, which you will accumulate during 5 checkpoints: 1. Project Proposal in Week 4 2. Data, Graph, and Confidence Intervals in Week Data Analysis in Week VoiceThread presentation of PowerPoint slides in Week Responses to your classmates presentations in Finals Week If you miss the deadline for any of the checkpoints, you will lose 5 points a day for that part of the project. No work will be accepted for this course after May 16.
