1 AP Expectations For the School Year The following chart is meant to give you an idea of how much out-of-class time should be budgeted for each AP. These entries are meant to be an approximation of time and assignments. Different teachers for the same course may have slightly different expectations but the time commitment should be about the same. Some students will need to budget less time and some will need to budget more depending on their skill levels. English AP English Language and Composition AP English Literature and Composition 11 th Grade Prerequisite - English th Grade Prerequisite - English 11 (B or better) Solid critical reading skills; Good analytical writing skills; Patience with the writing process Understands MLA usage Reading of literature and material with upper level syntax and diction; upper level literary analysis One reading per class Two two page papers per month s Minimum SOL test Summer Assignment Summer Assignment Social Studies AP World History AP US History 10 th Grade 11 th Grade Higher level reading and writing skills; Strong grasp of World I knowledge; Able to actively retrieve information from text Higher level reading, writing and analytical skills; as well as time management skills and enthusiasm for the subject matter. 2-3 hours per class SOL Test 2-3 hours per class SOL Test Summer assignment * Helpful Skills are non-curricular based skills that support student success in the AP.
