This interactive session will give you the necessary skill set to effectively navigate your first year and allow you to be a change agent and difference maker. 6 What to Do When You Don t Know What to Do: Ethical Decision-Making for Teachers From grades and testing to parent interactions and social media, teachers face difficult situations in which they must make ethical decisions. What do you do when you don t know what to do? Use an ethical decision-making model as a framework for gathering information, documenting your decision-making process and implementing a plan of action. Come learn about ethical decision-making models and practice applying them in educational dilemmas. Presented by: John T. Teachers who struggle with this skill often find themselves leaving the profession in their first three years. Unfortunately, there is no magic or quick fix when it comes to managing teenagers. However, teachers who utilize Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) often report being happier and more successful with their chosen profession. In this session, participants will learn about proactive approaches to establish PBIS in the classroom and walk away with real-world examples they can implement on the first day of school. 11 Panelists Karen Cossey, Teacher Recruiter, Spring Branch Independent School District Karen Cossey serves as a teacher recruiter for Spring Branch ISD where she oversees student teaching placements as well as recruiting and marketing efforts for highly qualified teaching personnel. She also serves as a liaison between Human Resources and universities and is instrumental in organizing screening events and job fairs for the district. Her career in Spring Branch ISD has spanned 29 years. She served as an elementary teacher before assuming her current role in Kay Kerr, Human Resources Director, Channelview Independent School District Kay Kerr is an alum of University of Houston Clear Lake with her bachelor s and master s degrees. She has served students as a teacher, librarian and an administrator. She has been in human resources for the past 20 years staffing schools. She served as a former president of the Houston Area Teacher Center (HATC). Andrea Kuhn, Assistant Director, Human Resources, Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Andrea Kuhn is one of three assistant directors for professional staffing for Cypress- Fairbanks ISD. Her career in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD has spanned 38 years. She served as an elementary teacher and assistant principal before assuming her current role in She completed her master s in education administration at the University of Houston. Jeff McCanna, Officer of Human Capital, Houston Independent School District Jeff McCanna is currently in his 27th year in education. He served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and director of human resources before assuming his current position as officer of human capital for HISD. He works with several national organizations focused on teacher equity for underserved students. He is presently working on his doctoral degree in educational administration and human resources. Marty Moffett, Human Resource Coordinator, Pasadena Independent School District Marty Moffett is serving his 34th year in education. He has served as a teacher, basketball and football coach, assistant principal, principal and now as a human resources coordinator for Pasadena ISD. He completed his M.S. at the University of Houston Clear Lake.

Founded in 1970, HATC includes roughly three dozen districts and is believed to be the nation s oldest and largest teacher center. The University of Houston College of Education merges research and real-world experiences to train teachers, principals, counselors, psychologists, health educators and other academic leaders.
